Henderson fires a 37 in season opener for NU boys

ARMSRONG—Drew Henderson fired a one-over par 37 to help lead the North Union Warrior boys golf team to a Top of Iowa Conference triangular victory on Thursday, April 10 at the Country Greens Golf Course.

The green-black-and-gold had the lowest team total of the day with a 174 as Bishop Garrigan took second with a 193 and North Iowa finished in third place with a score of 213.

Merron earns medalist honors in season opener

LIVERMORE—Senior Hanna Merron claimed the medalist honors for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls golf squad in their season opener held on Tuesday, April 8 at the beautiful Spring Valley Golf Course.

Merron won the medalist honor with her nine-hole score of 43 as Spencer’s Megan Irvine took the runner-up medal with her score of 45.

BG boys golfers open season on the road

HUMBOLDT—The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys golf team opened the 2025 season on the road on Tuesday, April 8 at the Humboldt Country Club with a non-conference triangular meet.

The black-and-gold finished in third place in the season opener with a team score of 195 as Spencer took first place with a good early season total of 151 and Humboldt was second with a 158 score.

Wolverine boys win league home quad meet at home

WEST BEND—Led by the medalist in the meet, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys golf team won a tight Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular meet held at the West Bend Golf & Country Club on Monday, April 14.

The purple-and-gold along with Pocahontas Area both had a team score of 187, but the Wolverines won the meet via the fifth score tie-breaker as Newell-Fonda was third with a 198 and Sioux Central was fourth with a team total of 213.

WB-M girls golfers drop league road match

POCAHONTAS—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls golf squad dropped a Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular meet on Monday, April 14 held at the Pocahontas Golf Club.

Newell-Fonda had the low score of the day with a team total of 209 as Sioux Central was the runner-up with a 219, Pocahontas Area finished in third place with a 224 and West Bend-Mallard placed fourth with a score of 236.

WB-M boys run in Lynn Jolly Relays

CHEROKEE—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys track team competed on Thursday, April 10 at the Lynn Jolly Relays against a field of 12 teams.

The purple-and-gold scored seven points and placed 12th in the team standings as the Spencer Tigers won the team title with their score of 114 points.

Golden Bear girls top North Union 203-243

BANCROFT—In the Top of Iowa Conference opener for both teams, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls golf team defeated the North Union Warriors 203-243 in a league match played at the North Kossuth Golf Club on Thursday, April 10.

Hanna Merron of Bishop Garrigan was the medalist of the meet with her score of 48 while teammate Gabby Buscher took the runner-up medalist with her round of 50.

Wolverine golfers open season at home

WEST BEND—Both the West Bend-Mallard boys and girls golf teams opened the 2025 season on Thursday, April 10 at home at the West Bend Golf & Country Club with a Twin Lakes Conference meet against the Southeast Valley Jaguars.

The purple-and-gold fell to the Jaguars by the final score of 232-255 while the boys dropped their conference match to Southeast Valley by the final score of 177-200.

AHS-BGHS High School trap-shoot results

On Wednesday, April 9 at the Izaak Walton League trap range, the Algona-Bishop Garrigan teams hosted a five-team meet to begin the week.

The Emmet County Clay Busters had the best score of the day with a team score of 228 as the Humboldt Wildcats were second with a 220, one stroke ahead of Algona High’s score of 219.

Kollyn Weimers of Bishop Garrigan turned in the high male score with his 49 while Algona’s Porter Divis had the second best total of 46.

Dirt track racing right around the corner

ALGONA—Area racing at the Kossuth County Speedway draws closer and closer despite Mother Nature recently battling a tug-of-war game between spring and winter.

The track will have some changes this season as Kevin Long is the new track manager and Austin Wolf will be in charge of the track preparation.

2025 Wall of Fame inductees announced

ALGONA—The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce the 2025 Class of the Wall of Fame. This year’s three individuals and two teams will be inducted prior to our first home football game.

Our hope is not only to honor the past but to inspire our current students to strive to be part of the rich tradition and history of Algona High School.

Joyce signs with University of South Dakota Coyotes

VERMILLION, SD—Former Bishop Garrigan all-state point guard Molly Joyce recently entered the transfer portal and will be taking her basketball talents next year to the University of South Dakota.

Joyce has spent the past two seasons at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. and she had a lot of success the past two years for the Bulldogs.

WB-M girls win three events at Raider Relays

SAC CITY—Powered by gold medal performances in three different events, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad placed fourth in the team standings with 79 points at the Raider Relays on Friday, April 4.

Placing first for the purple-and-gold was Allie Fehr with a leap of 4’ 10” in the high jump; Tyra Schupbach in the 3,000-meter run in 10:40.58 and the 4 x 800-meter relay crew of Addie Montag, Lily Morey, Mackenzie Fehr and Allie Fehr with a time of 11:19.51.

Wolverine boys run at Sac City

SAC CITY—In their second outdoor meet of the 2025 season, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team competed in the Raider Relays on Friday, April 4.

The purple-and-gold scored seven team points to finish in 11th place overall in the 12-team meet as Westwood of Sloan captured the team title with 142 points.

Trap-shoot teams host Larry Lenz Invitational

ALGONA—The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trap-shoot squads hosted the first ever Larry Lenz Invitational on Saturday, April 5 at the East Fork Izaak Walton League.

The meet was held in honor of Lenz who was instrumental in getting the area high school trap-shoot teams getting started back in 2010.

Local football schedules released

BOONE—The 2025 and 2026 high school football schedules were released on Monday by the Iowa High School Athletic Union for the four area high school teams.

The 2026 schedule will be the same teams as the 2025 schedule with the only difference is that the team that was the home team in 2025 will be on the road in 2026.
