Youthful dominates 28th annual all-area boys team

ALGONA—Youth dominates the 28th annual edition of the Kossuth County Advance boys all-area teams as there are just three seniors among this year’s 10 honorees.

Leading the squad is a three-year member who was a prolific scorer, as Algona’s Ben Helmers, who poured in over 1,500 career points during his career and was one of the leading scorers in the entire state this winter joins the team again.

AHS boys runner-ups at North Iowa Indoor Championships

CLEAR LAKE—Algona won four events and set new meet records in all four events as the red-and-black finished second in the team standings in the North Iowa Indoor Championships held on Friday, March 28.

The Bulldogs amassed a team total of 103 points in the 14-team field that was topped only by Clear Lake’s score of 107 as the two squads ran away from the field as Waverly-Shell Rock was distant third place with a team score of 67 points.

Bulldog girls win three events at Clear Lake Indoor Meet

CLEAR LAKE—On the strength of winning three different events, the Algona Bulldog girls track squad finished in second place overall with 78 points at the North Iowa Indoor Championships held on Thursday, March 27.

Clear Lake won the team title in the indoor meet with a team score of 96.5 points as a total of 15 teams competed in the meet.

North Union girls compete in Brookings, SD indoor meet

BROOKINGS, SD—The North Union Warrior girls track squad competed on Saturday, March 29 at the Ruth Marske Invite held on the campus of South Dakota State University with a total of 30 teams competing in the indoor meet.

The green-black-and-silver had four top 30 finishes during the day led by a 14th place showing by the 4 x 400-meter relay group of Alexis Cummins, Peyton Jenkins, Marissa Nielsen and Sienna Hanson in 4:45.38.

Allie Fehr, Schupbach earn gold medals at Lake City

LAKE CITY—Allie Fehr and Tyra Schupbach both earned gold medals for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls track squad on Monday, March 31 at the Chelsey Henkenius Early Bird Relays.

A total of 10 different teams competed in the meet where no team points were kept. Fehr won the high jump with her winning leap of 4’ 10” while Schupbach crossed the finish line first in the 3,000-meter run in 10:58.61.

Trio of runner-up finishes for WB-M Wolverine boys

LAKE CITY—Coming home with silver medals in three different events, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys track team had a solid showing at the Chelsey Henkenius Early Bird Relays on Monday, March 31.

Nine other teams competed in the meet where no team scores were kept. Leydan Grimm was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles for West Bend-Mallard in 1:04.24.

Warrior boys run at Ruth Marske Invite

BROOKINGS, SD—The North Union Warrior boys track team traveled to the campus of South Dakota State University on Saturday, March 29 to compete in the Ruth Marske Invite against 29 other  teams.

The green-black-and-silver came home with three top 20 finishes during the meet with the top place winners being the 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Greyson Colegrove, Carson Crouch, Colin Kruse and Kade Madden with a 14th place showing in 3:55.77.

Youthful girls all-area squad flashes a ton of talent

ALGONA—It was a banner year for the four area girls basketball squads during the 2024-2025 season as for the first time in the past 20 years, all of the area teams recorded at least 15 wins during the season.

With the youthful flavor of this year’s all-area team, look for more success by the squads during the 2025-2026 campaign on the hardwood.

Wolverine boys run at Storm Lake on Monday

STORM LAKE—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys track team competed at the Buena Vista Elite Indoor Meet on Monday, March 24. No team scores were kept in the meet that featured a total of 28 teams competing in the indoor meet.

The top place winner was the 4 x 400-meter relay crew of Grady Goddard, Cesar Falcon, Abner Zaugg and Leydan Grimm finishing in 20th place overall with a clocking of 4:12.14.

Good showing for WB-M girls at BV indoor meet

STORM LAKE—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls track squad had another strong showing on Monday, March 24 at the Buena Vista Elite Indoor Meet. No team scores were kept in the meet that saw 28 different teams competing.

The purple-and-gold were the runner-ups in a pair of individual events as Allie Fehr took second in the high jump by gliding over the bar at 5’ 2” along with Maddie Fehr’s 8.16 time in the 60-meter dash.

Bulldog girls win six events at Humboldt Indoor Meet

HUMBOLDT—The Algona Bulldog girls track squad won six events, including three relays at the Humboldt Indoor Meet on Thursday, March 20. No team scores were kept as 10 teams competed during the meet.

Natalie Johnson was a double winner for the red-and-black as the junior won the 60-meter dash in 8.15 and took the 200-meter dash with her winning time of 28.89.

AHS, BG boys run at Nielsen Indoor Meet

HUMBOLDT—Both the Algona and Bishop Garrigan boys track teams competed against eight other squads on Friday, March 21 at the Nielsen Family Indoor Meet.  No team scores were kept during the meet.

Algona won four events during the meet as Max Nevitt tossed the shot put 54’ 3” for a gold medal while teammate Will Weichert sprinted to a winning time of 7.28 in the 60-meter dash, an event where the red-and-black went 1-2-3.

Three area girls squads run at Mason City Indoor Meet

MASON CITY—A trio of area girls track squads competed in the River-Hawk Invitational held here on Tuesday, March 18 as no team scores were kept in the meet.

Macy Knapp of Algona was the top area place winner as she ended up in second place in the 800-meter run in 2:32.89 while teammate Natalie Johnson took third in the 200-meter dash with her time of 27.64.

Runner-up finish for AHS boys at 3A state indoor meet

AMES—Opening the 2025 season with an impressive debut, the Algona Bulldog boys’ track team placed second at the Class 3A IATC state indoor meet championships on Thursday, March 13.

The red-and-black’s team total of 55 points on the day was topped only Pella’s winning total of 57 points. The Bulldogs led almost the entire meet until the Dutch won the second-to-last event.

WB-M girls place fifth at 1A state indoor meet

AMES—West Bend-Mallard earned medals in six different events as the purple-and-gold finished in fifth place overall on Friday, March 14 at the Class 1A girls state indoor championships.

The Wolverines scored a team total of 29 points during the day in their season opener. Council Bluffs St. Albert edged out Saint Ansgar 44-43 for the team title.
