Golden Bears squeeze past Eagles 48-43

ALGONA—Ninth-ranked Bishop Garrigan got all they could handle from the West Hancock Eagles on Friday, Feb. 7 in Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball play before holding off the red-and-white by the final score of 48-43.

The black-and-gold let a 13-point lead get away and still trailed 29-28 with 4:31 to play in third quarter before holding on for the hard-fought league win.

Late run leads NU to eighth win of year

ARMSTRONG—Trailing 52-47 with 4:10 to play in the game, the North Union Warrior boys basketball team finished the contest on a 13-3 run to pull out a 60-55 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Three Warriors found double digits in the win led by Drew Henderson with 17 points as Caden Walders contributed 14 and Khael Jones added 11 more.

Golden Bears cruise past West Hancock 58-21

ALGONA—Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan built a nice first period lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 58-21 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the West Hancock Eagles on Friday, Feb. 7.

The black-and-gold led 22-9 after the first quarter and never trailed in the win as they improved to 18-3 overall and are now 13-2 in the conference while West Hancock fell to 9-11 and 7-9 in the league.

Warrior girls cruise to win number 13

ARMSTRONG—North Union’s defense forced 25 turnovers in a 64-25 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Feb. 4 over the Eagle Grove Eagles to earn their 13th win of the season.

Ainsley Ulrich led three green-black-and-silver players in double figures with 22 points while teammate Maisey Bierstedt added 16 points and Shallie Walders chipped in with 12 more.

WB-M girls earn 15th win of season

MANSON—West Bend-Mallard notched win number 15 of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 4 with a hard-fought 50-45 Twin Lakes Conference girls basketball win over Manson Northwest Webster. The purple-and-gold outscored the home team 19-9 in the final period to rally for the win.

Hailey Stalzer was one of a pair of Wolverine players to reach double figures with 14 points in the contest while teammate Chloe Dickey added a career-high 11 points.

BG swim team finishes year at Mason City district meet

MASON CITY—The first year of competition for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys swim team came to an end at the district swim meet held on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The Golden Bears finished in eighth place in the team standings with a team score of 78 points. All three black-and-gold relays ended up in eighth place as the top place winners for the day.

No. 1 Algona boys advance to state dual meet

ALGONA—Top-ranked Algona dominated No. 21 West Marshall 58-16 to advance to the Class 2A state dual meet in Coralville at the regional team dual wrestling meet held on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Trojans topped No. 23 Crestwood 46-33 to advance to face Algona.

Poky topples Wolverine boys 71-52

POCAHONTAS—Pocahontas Area handed the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines a 71-52 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball loss on Friday, Feb. 7.  The home team built a nine-point first quarter lead and never trailed in earning the league win.

Kacen Flynn poured in a team-leading 18 points and was joined in double figures by Abner Zaugg with 15 points and Houston Nielsen with eight.

Warriors take five-point league road win Friday

GARNER—North Union continued their strong play since the Christmas break as the green-black-and-silver picked up a hard-fought 56-49 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory on Friday, Feb. 7 over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

The visitors led by three points after the first eight minutes of play and led most of the contest, but could not pull away from the Warriors in the second meeting of the year between the two squads.

10th conference victory for North Union girls

GARNER—North Union earned their 14th overall and 10th conference win on Friday, Feb. 7 with a 46-31 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball road victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

The green-black-and-silver built a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never trailed again in the contest. Two players reached double figures as Ainsley Ulrich had 16 and Maisey Bierstedt chipped in with 11 points.

North Union wrestlers top Wolverines

GRAETTINGER—North Union topped West Bend-Mallard 72-6 in a non-conference triangular wrestling match held on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Both squads fell to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire earlier in the evening.

Brennen Bollinger went 2-0 with a pair of falls for the Warriors at 285 pounds on the night while teammate Max Merrill was 2-0 with a major decision and a fall as Ethan Preston also went 2-0 at 120 pounds for the green-black-and-silver.

Forest City defense suffocates Bishop Garrigan boys 45-29

FOREST CITY—Forest City’s defense smothered Bishop Garrigan’s offense as the red-and-white handed the Golden Bears a 45-29 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball loss on Tuesday, Feb. 4 to take over sole possession of first place in the league.

The home team improved to 14-4 overall and are now 13-1 in the conference while the ninth-ranked black-and-gold fell to 16-3 overall and are 12-2 in league contests.

Cougars too strong for WB-M boys

MANSON—Manson Northwest Webster built an early lead and never looked back in a 74-27 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Abner Zaugg was the lone purple-and-gold player in double figures with 13 points. Both Grady Goddard and Clint Fehr contributed four points along with two points each from Leydan Grimm, Austin Schmidt and Kacen Flynn.

Indians take top five ranked matchup over Bishop Garrigan

FOREST CITY—Fourth-ranked Forest City (Class 3A) used a shut-down defense and a career-high 29 points from Jenna Dontje in a 63-37 win over fourth-rated Bishop Garrigan (Class 1A) in a contest on Tuesday, Feb. 4 between the top two girls teams in the Top of Iowa Conference.

Poky deals WB-M league loss

POCAHONTAS—The Wolverines ventured on the road in Twin Lakes Conference girls basketball play on Friday, Feb. 7 and came home with a 54-37 league loss to Pocahontas Area.

The home team led by 11 points at halftime and extended their advantage to 19 points heading into the final frame. Tiffany Fehr was the only purple-and-gold player in double figures with 10 points, although both Hailey Stalzer and Lexi Welter added nine points each.

Trio of Algona girls wrestlers qualify for state meet

WINTHROP—Three Algona Bulldog girls wrestlers qualified for the Class 1A state tournament this week at the Class 1A super regional meet held on Friday, Jan. 30 at East Buchanan High School.

Sophomore Mara Davis won the title at 100 pounds while teammates senior Malyn Davis and freshman Regan Jensen finished second to punch their tickets to this week’s state meet in Coralville on Thursday and Friday.
