“Magnificent Seven” lead Algona boys to district title

ESTHERVILLE—Last year the Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team sent a total of six young men to the Class 2A state meet in Des Moines.

On Saturday, Feb. 10 at the District No. 2 tournament, the red-and-black upped that number by one and claimed the district title easily with a team score of 218 points.

Wolverine girls cruise in regional opener

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard came out on fire and cruised to a 60-26 Class 1A first round regional girls’ basketball victory on Thursday, Feb. 8 over the Ar-We-Va Rockets.

The purple-and-gold erupted for 30 points in the first eight minutes, taking a 30-5 advantage at the end of the first stanza. The home team went 13 of 20 from the field, including four of eight on three-pointers in the period.

Warrior girls end regular season at 16-5 overall

ARMSTRONG—Finishing the season with a conference win, 12th ranked North Union concluded the regular season with a hard-fought 38-28 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The home team led 6-4 at the end of low scoring first frame and took a 16-8 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The Warriors led 25-20 heading into the fourth quarter of play.

Algona girls win NCC crown

ALGONA—For the first time since 2018-2019, the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad are the champions of the North Central Conference.

The red-and-black wrapped up the conference title with a 56-45 victory over the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowgirls on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The 11th ranked Bulldogs had 13-1 mark in the league to claim the crown and head into Class 3A tournament play with an overall record of 17-4.

Garrigan boys hold off stubborn West Hancock squad

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan had beaten West Hancock quite easily twice in the regular season but the Eagles gave the black-and-gold a good battle before succumbing 63-56 in the Class 1A district quarterfinal round contest on Monday, Feb. 12.

Bishop Garrigan held a three-point lead at 17-14 after the first eight minutes of play and took a 30-23 advantage to the locker room at intermission.

Tigers surprise Algona boys 68-42

SPENCER—Spencer played their best game of the season and upset the Algona Bulldogs 69-42 in a non-conference boys’ basketball contest that took place on Monday, Feb. 12.

The victory improved the Tigers’ season overall record to 7-13 while the red-and-black fell to 13-7 overall on the year with the loss.

Irmiter’s career high leads North Union to win

ARMSTRONG—Senior Kody Irmiter poured in a career-high 29 points and ripped down 11 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked North Union to a 77-34 victory over Sibley-Ocheyedan on Monday, Feb. 12 in the Class 1A, District No. 1 quarterfinals.

The visitors started fast with 5-1 advantage but the green-black-and-silver responded with a 16-4 run to close the opening frame with a 16-9 lead.

No. 4 Lake Mills ends Wolverines’ season

LAKE MILLS—Fourth-ranked Lake Mills scored the first 11 points of the game and were never challenged in a 73-27 Class 1A district quarterfinal round victory on Monday, Feb. 12 over the West Bend-Mallard.

The Wolverines concluded the 2023-2024 season with an overall record of 5-18 while the Bulldogs will advance to the district semi-finals with a sparkling 21-1 mark.

Lake Mills edges Warrior boys 70-68 for league title

ARMSTRONG—They came into the game as the best two teams in the Top of Iowa Conference this season and everyone expected a great basketball game.

After 32 minutes of well-played basketball, no one in the packed gymnasium in Armstrong on Tuesday, Feb. 6 went away disappointed with the play as fourth ranked Lake Mills nipped eighth-rated North Union 70-68 to claim this year’s conference title.

WB-M boys edge North Iowa 49-48

WEST BEND—In the opening round of Class 1A boys’ district basketball action, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines nipped the North Iowa Bison by the final score of 49-48 on Friday, Feb. 9.

Trailing 46-45 with 1:06 remaining in the contest, Abner Zaugg scored a field goal to give the home team the lead. Mitch Stevens sank a pair of charity shots with 13.6 seconds left to make the score 49-46.

Bulldog boys rally past Clarion-Goldfield/Dows 

ALGONA—Algona scored 12 of the last 15 points of the game to rally to defeat the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowboys by the final score of 55-46 on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The North Central Conference contest was played on Tuesday, Feb. 6 as the Bulldogs improved to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference as the Cowboys fell to 5-14 and 0-14 in the league.

Long distance shooting leads AHS girls to regional win

ALGONA—Algona drained a total of 16 three-pointers and cruised past Eagle Grove 74-31 in the Class 3A Region No. 2 opener on Saturday, Feb. 10.

The red-and-black splashed 16 of 31 attempts behind the three-point arc as Casey VanOtterloo led the way by going eight of 13 and Lauren McLaughlin went four of eight from deep.

WB-M girls win regular season finale

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard ended the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 6 with a 53-22 Twin Lakes Conference girls’ basketball victory over Storm Lake St. Mary’s on “Senior Night.”

The purple-and-gold took an 11-5 lead at the end of the first period and increased their advantage to 22-12 at halftime. The home team also led 30-20 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Algona squeezes past Hampton-Dumont 62-61

HAMPTON—Algona never trailed in the game but could not put away a stubborn Hampton-Dumont squad as the visitors squeezed out a narrow 62-61 North Central Conference boys’ basketball win on Friday, Feb. 9.

Algona led 62-55 with 37 seconds left after a triple by Evan Allie. But the home team scored the next six points to get within one point and a half-court heave at the buzzer for the win bounced harmlessly off the rim.
