Opening night attracts 61 cars at speedway

ALGONA—After opening night was rained out last week, the 2024 season got started at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 16.

The season opened with the biggest field of two-person cruisers in the past five years and had a pair of heat races for the first time in that period.

Golden Bear girls medal in three different events

DES MOINES—Earning medals in three different events, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls track squad placed 39th overall with six points at the Class 1A state track meet last week at Drake Stadium.

The black-and-gold finished in third place in the 400-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the sprint medley relay.

WB-M girls take home medals in three events at state

DES MOINES—A young West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls track squad took home medals in three different events at the Class 1A state track meet last week at Drake Stadium.

The purple-and-gold scored a team total of nine points to finish in 29th place overall as a pair of Wolverine sophomores took home medals for the second straight year.

Merrill medals in both shot & discus at state for Warriors

DES MOINES—North Union senior Olivia Merrill earned medals in a pair of events at the Class 1A state track meet held on May 16-18.

The green-black-and-silver senior took fourth place in the shot put on Thursday with her best toss of 38’ 5¾” and followed that up on Friday with a seventh place showing in the discus with her throw of 120’ 9”.

Two Bulldog girls medal in Class 3A

DES MOINES—A pair of Algona Bulldog girls track members earned medals at the Class 3A state track this past weekend inside Drake Stadium on the beautiful blue oval.

Freshman Reagan Haynes finished fifth in the discus on Thursday and that same day, senior teammate Madison Ehirg took sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5’ 2”.

Brooks headed back to state golf for second time

WEBSTER CITY—For the second consecutive season, Algona’s Abby Brooks is returning to the Class 3A girls state golf tournament.

Brooks recorded three pars on the front nine to post a score of 44 and came back with six pars on the final nine holes for a 41 and an 18-hole total of 85 to place fourth overall to earn her second consecutive state berth.

Lichter headed back to state golf meet again

NASHUA—For the second straight year, Bishop Garrigan’s Avery Lichter will participate in the Class 1A girls state golf tournament as an individual.

Lichter had two pars on the front nine with her score of 43 and followed that up with three more on the back nine with a 42 and an 18-hole total of 85 to place third overall and advance to the state meet in Marshalltown.

Allie sprints to medal in 200-meter dash

DES MOINES—Algona sophomore Evan Allie made the finals and earned a medal in the 200-meter dash at the Class 3A boys’ state track meet held from May 16-18 inside Drake Stadium.

Allie sprinted with a time of 22.67 to place eighth in the event and after qualifying for the finals with his clocking of 22.12 in Thursday’s prelims. He earned his squad one point which left them in 41st place in the final team standings.

Bulldogs cruise in season opener

CHARLES CITY—Aiden Ulrich and Tate Slagle each belted home runs and Ulrich pitched five strong innings to lead the Algona Bulldogs baseball team to an 11-2 season opening victory over the Charles City Comets on Tuesday, May 14.

The red-and-black scored first on a solo home run by Ulrich in the top of the first and added three more in the third frame for an early 4-0 advantage.

Rasch finishes seventh in shot put at state

DES MOINES—Senior Colin Rasch was the only competitor at the Class 1A state track meet for the North Union Warrior boys track team, but he did the school proud by bringing home some hardware on Friday, May 17.

Rasch earned his medal with a seventh place showing in the shot put. He opened the day with tosses of 48’ 11¼”, a scratch and 47’ 10½” in the prelims and followed that up with a scratch, 46’ 9¼” and 49’ 5½” in the finals.

Bishop Garrigan blanks Algona in cross-town baseball

BISHOP GARRIGAN—Bishop Garrigan erupted for eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning in a 12-0, five-inning non-conference baseball win over cross-town rival Algona in a game played on Friday, May 17.

The black-and-gold started fast in the contest as Tate Foertsch deposited a 1-2 pitch over the left-field fence for an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame.

WB-M baseball drops season opener 16-6

EAGLE GROVE—Eagle Grove exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bust open a 6-5 contest and went onto a 16-6, six-inning season opening victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

Each team plated two runs in the opening frame before the home scored once in the second for an early 2-1 advantage.

The visitors tallied three times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead but the Eagles tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame.

Poky topples AHS softball squad 8-2

POCAHONTAS—Pocahontas Area built an early 5-0 advantage and never trailed in an 8-2 non-conference season-opening softball victory on Monday, May 20 over the Algona Bulldogs.

The home team plated a single run in the first and second innings before breaking the contest open with three tallies in the bottom of third stanza and added three more insurance runs in the fifth.

Golden Bears softball squeezes past Broncos 3-2

BELMOND—Bishop Garrigan plated the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to squeeze out a hard-fought 3-2 Top of Iowa Conference season-opening softball victory over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos on Monday, May 20.

Abbie Capesius lead off the sixth with a single, went to second on an error and to third base after a fly out. Abbie scored the winning run with two outs when Molly Peterson reached on another Bronco error.

Golden Bears fall to #5 Pleasantville 10-1

RIPPEY—Bishop Garrigan scored first but fifth-ranked (Class 2A) Pleasantville responded with the final 10 tallies in a 10-1 season opening win over the black-and-gold in a contest played at Walt Anderson Field on Thursday, May 15.

The Golden Bears got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third frame when Carter Schwab coaxed a base-on-balls. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a RBI single by Nick Leerar.

Golden Bears club Broncos baseball team 20-0

BELMOND—Bishop Garrrigan opened Top of Iowa Conference baseball play with a 20-0, five-inning drubbing on Monday, May 20 of the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The black-and-gold erupted for eight runs in the top of the first inning for a quick 8-0 advantage. The visitors scored three times in the fourth frame and ended the contest early with nine tallies in the top of fifth inning.
