Turner extinguishes AHS girls’ state tourney dreams

ALGONA—Coming into Saturday evening’s Class 3A Region No. 8 regional final, the talk was that the junior guard, Claire Turner of Spirit Lake, was one of the best players around.

After her 32 minutes of play in the contest, the Indian guard left no doubt as she poured in a game-high 28 points to lead the 12th-ranked Indians to a 61-53 victory over eighth-rated Algona to advance to the girls state basketball tournament.

Slagle places fourth at 157 pounds at state

DES MOINES—For the third straight year, Algona’s Tate Slagle finished in the top five wrestlers of his class at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament.

Slagle, a senior, finished in fourth place at 157 pounds after taking fifth place in the 2024 state tournament and third place in the 2023 state tourney for the red-and-black.

Trio of area wrestlers compete at state

DES MOINES—Three area wrestlers competed at the Class 1A state wrestling tournament held here on Feb. 19-22. North Union senior Brennen Bollinger went 3-2 at 285 pounds, falling one place short of winning a medal to lead the way.

Bishop Garrigan to play in seventh straight regional final

ALGONA—If it seems like Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’basketball squad plays in the regional finals every year, you would be correct.

For the seventh straight season and eighth time in the last nine years, the black-and-gold have qualified for the regional finals after a 70-31 victory over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves on Friday, Feb. 21.

Algona girls advance to third consecutive regional final

ALGONA—For the third straight year, the Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad will compete in the Class 3A regional final for the right to play in the state basketball tournament.

The eighth-rated red-and-black earned their latest chance with a 68-46 victory on Wednesday, Feb. 19 over the Hull Western Christian Wolfpack as they moved onto the regional finals where they hosted 12th-ranked Spirit Lake.

BG girls earn win No. 20 of season

ALGONA—Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan notched their 20th victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 18 with a 68-34 win in the girls Class 1A regional quarterfinals over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

After a tight first eight minutes, the black-and-gold gradually pulled away in the second period getting eight points from both Graclyn Eastman and Sacha Alesch in the frame.

Huge third quarter leads Newman past WB-M girls

WEST BEND—A huge third quarter spurred the Mason City Newman Knights to a 56-41 Class 1A girls regional basketball tournament quarterfinal round win over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The visitors scored off the opening tap, but the purple-and-gold responded with nine straight points. Newman fought back to tie the game at 9-9 before two late free throws by Tiffany Fehr gave the home team an 11-9 advantage at the end of the first period.

Late third period run propels Saints past North Union

SAINT ANSGAR—A 7-0 run in the third quarter proved to be the difference in a Class 1A girls regional quarterfinal basketball contest on Tuesday, Feb. 18 between the Saint Ansgar Saints and the North Union Warriors as the 12th-ranked Saints squeezed out a 55-47 win.

Golden Bears move on to district finals

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan exploded for 30 points in the opening eight minutes and never looked back in a 70-61 win over the West Fork Warhawks in the Class 1A district semi-finals played on Thursday, Feb. 20.

The home team started fast by building a commanding 30-18 advantage at the end of the first period. The black-and-gold took a 48-32 lead to the locker room at halftime and led 58-48 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wildcats shoot past Algona 90-48

HUMBOLDT—Humboldt splashed 13 three-pointers and scored 34 points off 21 Algona turnovers in a 90-48 rout of the red-and-black in the opening round of the Class 3A sub-state boys basketball tournament on Monday, Feb. 24.

The Wildcats drained nine three-pointers in the opening half to build a huge halftime lead and never took their foot off the gas ending the game strong with a 19-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

Third-ranked Royals end North Union’s season

MARCUS—Third-ranked Marcus Meriden Cleghorn Remsen Union outscored North Union 36-21 in the second half to break open a seven-point contest at halftime and went onto a 71-49 victory over the Warriors in the Class 1A district semi-finals on Thursday, Feb. 20.

No. 1 Lions cruise past Algona boys

CLEAR LAKE—Top-ranked Clear Lake completed a perfect regular season and North Central Conference slate with a 78-53 victory on Tuesday, Feb. 18 over the Algona Bulldogs by the final score of 78-53.

The Lions raced out to a 28-11 first quarter advantage and never looked back as they ended the regular season undefeated at 21-0 and were the North Central Conference champions with a perfect 14-0 record.
