See the picture here? It’s my new favorite cap. It’s a memento from my helicopter flight from the hospital here to the hospital in Mason City a few weeks ago. That’s kind of a hard way to get a new cap, but then you know I’ve never shied away from hard. Well, almost never. OK, maybe a little.

FORT DODGE—Eighth-ranked Algona remained perfect in North Central Conference games after fighting off a stubborn St. Edmond Gaels squad 64-58 in a North Central Conference girls basketball contest played on Tuesday, Jan 28.

Algona senior Lauren McLaughlin had a big night for her squad as she poured in a game-high 25 points, including the 1,000^th point of her high school career in the contest.

Bestenlehner, [center, dark shirt] bought the first copy and there was quite a crowd behind her and outside the newspaper office. A total of 14,500 copies were printed, nearly double the regular amount. The Advance’s circulation is 7,800.

The difference between need and want

Rachel Peterson is community engagement coordinator for a domestic and sexual violence crisis services organization. Her work involves requesting, sorting and transporting physical donations. She sent me a column to consider running in CITYVIEW. The timing didn’t work, but her thoughts do, as she made me rethink how and why I donate. She said she has learned quite a bit.

The overwhelming generosity of people helped provide joy to children in need through Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts this season. Across the U.S., the Samaritan's Purse project collected 10.5 million shoebox gifts in 2024. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2024, the ministry is now sending over 11.9 million shoebox gifts to children worldwide.
