I’m not writing about pneumonia again. I promise.

Okay, here’s what I’m not going to write about today:

Pneumonia. I won’t bore you with the fact that it came back for an encore just one week after its first engagement. I won’t write about that because reading about other people’s illnesses is about as fascinating as reading about - oh, I don’t know - your cousin’s neighbor’s hangnail. Besides, I wrote all about my first round a few weeks ago.

The Daily Umbrella

Gloom, despair and agony on me

If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” Those are the words from a song in an ongoing skit from the TV variety show “Hee Haw” that I recall from my youth. “Gloom, despair and agony on me.” If you remember the show, you are singing along. If not, be patient.

BURKE’S EUROPEAN HOTEL -- We desire to call to attention the card of the above house in another column.  The hotel is centrally located and is the favorite resort of business men.  The appointments are first-class and everything is done to conduce to the comfort of guests.  We advise those visiting Chicago to put up at Burke’s European Hotel.

Throwback: Gala 1990

Today’s throwback photo from Dec. 8, 1989, shows the very first Gala committee making plans for the first Gala fundraising event held in 1990.

The caption reads: Plans are underway for Gala ‘90, an evening of catered dining and fun to be held at Garrigan on April 21. The evening will feature oral and silent auctions of some 220 high-appeal items. One lucky Gala-goer will even drive off in a new car!

Digging into Spring

By Elizabeth Adams, KCEO

Spring has officially made an appearance here in North Iowa, well, according to the calendar! We all know that spring in Iowa can mean a myriad of conditions. Many well-meaning folks have been tempted to jump into the garden on a pleasant day, only to be thwarted by freezing temps and an occasional snow squall the next. Even those with years of gardening experience can get a bit itchy to dig in.

The Daily Umbrella

Less stress, more success

“Take your time going but hurry back.” That is advice given to me frequently by my friend Alan, starting three decades ago. I was never exactly sure what it meant. I am still not, but that hasn’t kept me from saying the same phrase to my family and friends ever since — leaving them in a similar state of confusion.
