Funds for new trees and treatments for EAB

By Barb Smith, City of Algona

This is the time of year many people start thinking about ways to improve their yard, gardens and landscaping around the home. When it comes to taking care of these spring tasks, the City of Algona has programs and services that can help.

Hearing God’s message for our lives today, Scripture Luke 4: 16-30

Throwback: Quas Quis or Bust

Brian Buscher [driver] of Algona built this 1923 T-Roadster by himself, only to see it damaged, along with another one of his cars, in the tornado here June 28. With a little help from his friends, however, he was able to take part in the Fourth of July parade. They pushed it along the entire parade route as one of the cars entered by the North Iowa Street Rod Association.

To the Editor:

Manufactured and purposeful trauma

Russ Vought, author of Project 2025 and now the head of the OMB, said this recently:

"We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected. When they wake up in the morning, we want them to NOT want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains. We want their funding to be shut down … We want to put them in trauma.”

The Daily Umbrella

Basic life skills should be required learning

As legislators and common folk debate what subjects or topics should — or should not — be taught in public schools, I can’t help but think of some of the important life skills I learned in one class that I hope are still being taught today.

Seeds of Spring

Ink Spots

I wrote some time ago about my adventures with my Lifeline button - mainly that I bumped it accidentally, thereby setting off an alarm that had neighbor Dan rushing over to see if I was okay (he and Denise are first on the call list). When I dutifully dialed the number on the back of the Lifeline thing to say I was okay, a pleasant voice answered, “Murphy’s Pizza, may I help you?” I like pizza as well as the next person, but not so much as to have it delivered from Tyler, Texas.

Brass tacks from rural Iowa

To the Editor:

Elon’s chainsaw comes for the farm…

March is finally here, and that means we’re chomping at the bit for planting season. On my farm and those around me, we’re making sure everything—and everyone—is ready to roll as soon as the weather and the crop insurance companies give us the green light. The seed is being delivered, the grease and oil applied, the fuel tanks filled. We’re gearing up.

To Julie, who simply wanted to know...

By Pastor David Grindberg, First Lutheran Church in Algona

I don’t know exactly what time it was. My sleep was so deep that the phone rang twice before I realized what was happening.

“Pastor?” There was urgency on the other end of the line. “It’s near. Will you come?”

“Yes, of course. I’ll be right there.”
