BGHS students excel at state speech

MOVILLE—Bishop Garrigan students earned 12 Division I or Excellent ratings and two Division II or Good ratings at the Iowa High School Speech Association state contest, which was held Saturday, March 12, at Woodbury Central High School in Moville.

Saturday craft, vendor show in Whittemore

WHITTEMORE—Twenty-three vendors showcased their products at the Whittemore Spring Extravaganza Vendor and Craft Show held at the Whittemore Community Center on Saturday, March 12.

Show coordinator Melanie Elbert said this was the fifth year for the show. Last year’s show had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. She said this year’s event was a good show but a smaller show than past years. Assisting Elbert this year with the show were Heather Kron and Marv and Nancy Johnson.

National FFA week marked

Monday, February 21, was the first day of National FFA Week. The Algona chapter had the opportunity to have dress-up days all throughout the week to spread the word about FFA. 

The chapter kicked off the week with Blue and Gold Day, which are the national colors for FFA. Also on Monday, members served cherry pie to the teachers as a thank you.

Supporting Students Special Education Resource Fair March 28 in Algona

ALGONA—A “first-ever” Special Education Resource Fair is being planned for students and parents in grades 8-12 who attend Algona Schools and Bishop Garrigan Schools.

The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 28 in the library at the Algona High School. Families are asked to enter the school through the high school common doors.

Supervisors OK budget, deputies

ALGONA—After no comments from citizens during a public hearing, the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors approved a budget for the fiscal year that runs from July 1 through June 30, 2023, during their regular meeting Tuesday morning, March 15.

Explore careers with FCCLA

Mrs. Louwagie runs the FCCLA program at Algona High School. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. This program helps the students who are involved learn leadership skills through different experiences around the area. 

Updated guidelines for free screenings

ALGONA—The Care for Yourself Program has provided free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screening to eligible individuals for over 25 years. Available through Community Health of Kossuth Regional Health Center, these services are part of a national program that aims to help reduce women's risk for health issues related to breast cancer, cervical cancer and cardiovascular health.

District Republican delegates elected

ALGONA—The Kossuth County Republican Convention was held on Saturday, March 12 at the shelter house at Tietz Park in Algona.

County chair Brent Owen gave the welcome. Candidates and current elected officials for local and state office gave speeches. Delegates were elected to the district convention. The Kossuth County GOP platform was discussed and approved. 

Farmers’ Market vendors meeting set for March 19

ALGONA—A meeting for potential vendors at the Kossuth County Farmers’ market will be held on Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Algona. 

The market is held seasonally in Algona on the corner of Dodge and Nebraska Streets on the Carnegie lawn. The market is open on Saturday mornings from mid-May through early October and Wednesday afternoons from July through mid-September. 

Project AWARE cleanup to take on West Fork of the Des Moines River Water Trail

CLIVE—Volunteers have the opportunity to spend their summer vacation cleaning up, learning about and exploring 61 miles of the West Fork of the Des Moines River from Petersburg, Minn., to near West Bend, from July 10 to 15.

Extremely dry February leads to drought expansion

DES MOINES—Last month was the sixth driest February on record for Iowa, and the lack of precipitation resulted in the expansion of drought conditions across the state, according to the latest water summary update.

Precipitation for the month averaged only 0.27 inches, almost an inch below normal. Drought conditions expanded during the month, with more than 90 percent of Iowa in some form of dryness or drought at the end of February.
