Research farm improvements will be discussed in Algona, Feb. 23

ALGONA—The North Central Iowa Research Association and the Iowa State University (ISU) Northern Research Farm will host a series of informational meetings this winter to inform farmers and agri-business about the need for improved facilities at the ISU Northern Research Farm near Kanawha.

Variety of methods to access farm bill education in 2022

AMES—Crop farmers have until March 15 to make their annual election for Price Loss Coverage or Agriculture Risk Coverage (at the individual or county levels) under the 2018 Farm Bill.

This annual decision impacts the 2022 crop year, consistent with the 2018 Farm Bill. Similar annual decisions, for the 2023 crop year, will coincide with the final year of the bill. 

Humboldt farmer leads state producers

CLIVE—A Humboldt County pig farmer, Kevin Rasmussen, is the new president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). The change in leadership followed the IPPA annual meeting on Jan. 25. 

Rasmussen, who had served as president-elect in 2021, replaces Dennis Liljedahl of Essex. Liljedahl now holds the past president position on the IPPA Board of Directors. Both Rasmussen and Liljedahl will serve one-year terms in their new roles.

IOWA CITY—Many area students earned dean’s list recognition for the 2021 fall semester at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Unique assemblies connect students to a bigger world

WEST BEND—On Feb. 8, from 8:45 - 9:30 a.m., the West Bend/Mallard students will gather for an assembly to be entertained by a magician from “Dimension of Illusion” There will be a mixture of comedy, music and magic for the students to enjoy. There is audience participation and it should be a fun assembly for the students. WBM tries to have several assemblies during the year for the students to enjoy.

RAGBRAI likely passing through Kossuth County

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) is no stranger to Kossuth County, and it will likely find its way across the area during its run this summer the week of July 24-30.

The Register announced the host communities for the ride last weekend. Among them are Pocahontas, Emmetsburg and Mason City. 

Dance the Night Away at YMCA event Feb. 12

ALGONA—The Algona Family YMCA will host a father-daughter dance on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Moss gym at the YMCA. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m. Fathers, uncles and grandfathers are all welcome to attend the dance for daughters ages 3 to 14. 

There will be a fee for the event.

Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshment will be provided and a professional photographer will be available to take individual photos of the child and guest.

Frostbite Olympics kicks off Thursday night, ice fishing derby Saturday

ALGONA—Your friends and neighbors are gearing up for the 2022 Frostbite Olympics.

Don’t be left out in the cold. The event will kickoff with the Kiwanis Chili Cook Off on Thursday night, Feb. 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the VFW in Algona.

Iowa DNR sets Feb. 22 meeting at Water’s Edge

 

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a series of town hall-style meetings where local staff provide updates on recently completed hunting seasons, discuss possible changes to hunting rules and regulations, and address other topics as requested. 

Locally, the Iowa DNR will be at Water’s Edge Nature Center, 1010 250th St., Algona, on Feb. 22. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. 

Election cycle begins

Caucuses Monday: pick delegates in runup to ’22 vote

 

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Local Republicans and Democrats will hold their biennial precinct caucuses Monday, Feb. 7, starting at 7 p.m. Doors will open for registration at 6:30 p.m.

All of the Republican precincts will meet at the Burt Activity Center. 

All of the Democratic precincts will meet at the Algona Public Library. Masks are required.

Summit Carbon Solutions files permit application

 

AMES—Summit Carbon Solutions announced further progress on its carbon capture and storage project with the filing of its pipeline permit application in the state of Iowa with the Iowa Utilities Board.  That occurred Friday, Jan. 28.

KRHC trustees elect officers, OK projects

 

ALGONA—Three officers of the Kossuth Regional Health Center Board of Trustees were re-elected during the board’s monthly meeting Wednesday, Jan. 26.

Tom Geelan was re-elected chairman, John Cowin was re-elected secretary and Conley Nelson was re-elected treasurer of the board.

The trustees approved requests for several projects.

First semester Bishop Garrigan honor roll

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan High School has announced the students who qualified for the first semester honor roll. 

Those with an asterisk (*) earned a 4.0 grade point average.

Wesley man killed in 3-car crash in Minnesota

McLEOD COUNTY, Minn.—Jason Alexander Cobb, 24, Wesley, was killed Saturday, Jan. 29, in a three-vehicle crash  west of the Twin Cities. 

A report said the 2012 Toyota Camry that Cobb was driving collided with a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Eugene Allen Johnson, 68, New Richland, Minn., and a 2002 Chevy Silverado driven by Dean Lewis Helget, 54, New Ulm, Minn.
