How to retain high quality teachers during shortage

ALGONA—The Algona Community School Board began their Feb. 14 meeting with a public hearing on the proposed calendar prior to adopting the school calendar. The proposed calendar begins on Aug. 23, the first legal start date and ends for students on May 24. The calendar has 1,111 instructional hours for students, (1,080 hrs are required). The calendar has one day of professional development per month, which has been a valued changed for the district. Winter break starts on Dec.

Roof repair, fire alarm system discussed by supervisors 

 

ALGONA—Kossuth County supervisors approved allocating $25,000 for the EMS payroll for fiscal year 2022-23 and $186,659 for the courthouse roof project for a total of $211,659 during their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Kossuth County applied for and has received the first portion of funds for the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) totaling $1,438,626.

Soup Dinner

Fenton Sons of the American Legion Annual Soup Dinner will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20. The Fenton Sons of the American Legion will serve chicken noodle soup and chili, along with salads and desserts, for a free will donation at the Fenton Legion Hall.

Burt holding three public hearings March 8

BURT—Burt citizens will have opportunities to speak at public hearings at the next city council meeting Tuesday, March 8.

One of the public hearings is about a proposed community development block grant (CDBG) application for a water treatment facility improvement project and to participate in the development of a community development and housing needs assessment as part of the application process. 

KWMA annual meeting Feb. 23

 

ALGONA—Kossuth County Waste Management Association will hold its annual meeting Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at the courthouse.

The agenda includes election of officers, updates on the county landfill and transfer station operations, review of the proposed budget and adoption of a budget, tipping fees, equipment needs, a disposal agreement and other matters.

Becker named to Mercy College Health Sciences president’s list

DES MOINES—Jordann Becker of Algona has been named to the president’s list for the fall 2021 semester at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines. 

To qualify for this academic recognition, students must attain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.75, in their most recent semester, for a minimum of six credit hours.

World Day of Prayer service planned for March 4

ALGONA—Algona First United Methodist Church will host the local service of World Day of Prayer at 1:30 p.m. on Friday March 4. An offering will be taken for WDP USA during the service. Refreshments will be served. All are invited to attend this service of hope and love.

Lillien Rae Kofoot

Jacob and Bethany (Smith) Kofoot of Algona announce the birth of their daughter, Lillien Rae, on Feb. 8, 2022, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 21.5 inches long. Lillien is welcomed home by a sister Leona.

Maternal grandparents are Pam and Jim Smith of Sexton. Paternal grandparents are Jet and Allen Kofoot of Bode.

Jacob is employed at Redings Gravel. Bethany is employed at Windsor Manor.

 

Blue Earth Valley Quilters will meet Feb. 21

BLUE EARTH.—The Blue Earth Valley Quilters will hold their fifth meeting of the 2021-2022 program year on Monday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Blue Earth Area High School choir room. Those attending should enter through door V on the south side of the building. After introductions, a show-and-tell of items will be held.   

Deadline extended to enroll in 2022 Dairy Margin Coverage

DES MOINES—USDA has extended the deadline to enroll in Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) and Supplemental Dairy Margin Coverage (SDMC) for program year 2022. The deadline to apply for 2022 coverage is now March 25. As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing efforts to support dairy farmers and rural communities, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) opened DMC and SDMC signup in December 2021 to help producers manage economic risk brought on by milk price and feed cost disparities.

February is heart health month. There are 30.3 million Americans or about one-half of all adults in the United States with heart disease. 

Heart disease includes heart attacks, valve issues, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm and stroke. 

AHS Wall of Fame panel looking for nominations

ALGONA—A number of years ago, Algona High School created a “Wall of Fame” to recognize athletes and coaches who excelled in sports at AHS and beyond. A committee has been formed to gather nominations of possible recipients; athletes, coaches and community members and to review and examine their qualifications for this award.
