Iowa Lakes trustees begin search for next college president

ESTHERVILLE—The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees met at a special meeting to begin the search process for the next college president. 

Iowa Lakes Community College administrators have secured the services of Dr. Larry Ebbers, Professor Emeritus from Iowa State University, to lead the search.

Steenhard 50th

Craig and Karlene Steenhard will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 12. Cards will reach them if sent to 210 Nicollet Ave., Corwith, IA 50430.

Craig and Karlene were married on Feb. 12, 1972 at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith.

Valentine crafts, Bag of Books and tech help at Titonka Library

TITONKA—Titonka Public Library would like parents and kids of all ages to join them for a fun Valentine’s themed craft project on Saturday Feb. 12, 11 a.m. to noon. The library will provide the supplies and walk you through a craft that you can take home or donate to the Titonka Care Center. Craft options will match up with each age/skill level.

Albino display at nature center

ALGONA—The Water’s Edge Nature Center is hosting a special traveling Albino exhibit. The exhibit arrived last Saturday, Feb. 5 and will be housed at the nature center the month of February. The exhibit is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 8 to 4:30 p.m.

Letter to EPA continues Grassley’s advocacy for a stronger Renewable Fuel Standard

DES MOINES—Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), both members of the Senate Agriculture Committee, are urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prioritize the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) by maintaining the blending requirements for 2022; denying all pending Small Refinery Exemptions (SREs); eliminating proposed retroactive cuts to the renewable volume obligations (RVOs); and setting 2021 RFS volumes at the statutory levels.

Wesley man killed in 3-car crash in Minnesota

 

McLEOD COUNTY, Minn.—Jason Alexander Cobb, 24, Wesley, was killed Saturday, Jan. 29, in a three-vehicle crash  west of the Twin Cities. 

A report said the 2012 Toyota Camry that Cobb was driving collided with a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Eugene Allen Johnson, 68, New Richland, Minn., and a 2002 Chevy Silverado driven by Dean Lewis Helget, 54, New Ulm, Minn. 

Supervisors deny attorney fees on PAK-1 repair project

ALGONA—Kossuth County supervisors on Tuesday declined to approve a pair of proposed change orders and a pay request on the Palo Alto-Kossuth Joint Drainage District 1 (PAK-1) open ditch repair project.

Cory Juergens Construction, LLC performed the work, which involved several change orders for materials and working around an eagle’s nest on land near Whittemore owned by Brian Thul.

Home in Haiti donated in Lori’s memory

ALGONA—Al and Lori Koenecke and Bill and Deb Manske had been friends for many years. They worshipped together at the First United Methodist Church in Algona and were friends socially.

When Lori Koenecke died in 2021 at age 65, the Manskes chose to honor Lori’s memory by providing a home, a Safe T Home, for people they have never met in Haiti. People who needed shelter in a Caribbean country many, many miles away.

Now county owned

 

Kossuth County closed Friday, Jan. 28, on the purchase of the former Builders First Source/UBC properties on U.S. Highway 169 just north of McGregor Street. The purchase involved property inside fencing on both sides of the railroad tracks west of the structures shown. The purchase price was $550,000.

Board refuses, refutes drainage billing complaints

ALGONA—Joe Goche of Bancroft presented 98 pages of documents to the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, Jan. 25, reviewing page-by-page what he considered to be double-billed or incorrectly billed drainage assessments on properties owned by him or his land company.
