Avian Influenza hits flock of 5.3 million Iowa hens

BUENA VISTA COUNTY—A highly contagious and deadly avian influenza has been detected in an immense flock of egg-laying chickens in northwest Iowa, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship reported Friday.

ALGONA— Katlyn Griep and her family live on an acreage near Lu Verne. For nearly two years she drove from Lu Verne to Burt to drop her child off at day care, then drove back to Algona to work. That’s 38 miles and 46 minutes driving, before and after work each day. 

Summit:  Wants to work with landowners

ALGONA—Officials with the Summit Carbon Solutions answered questions about routes, notifications, survey crews accessing properties, eminent domain, insurance, drainage tile and payments during an hour-long presentation here, and they stated they want to work with landowners to reach agreements to cross their lands with their proposed pipeline project.

Ledyard-area wind farm going up

LEDYARD—Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions, a Charlotte, N.C., non regulated commercial brand of Duke Energy, is ready to erect its 207-megawatt Ledyard Windpower wind farm this year. 

It’s the company’s first renewable energy project in Iowa. It has a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement for 180 megawatts of the wind energy generated by the farm. Verizon said it will help it reach its net-zero goals. 

Local dancers join forces for All Iowa Team

Dancers that made the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association  All-Iowa Honor Dance Team and performed during the half-time show at the girls state basketball tournament are from Algona High School; Beth Anderson, Madison Nevitt and Danica VanGorkom.

Bancroft celebrates businesses

The Bancroft Chamber of Commerce recognized new and retiring businesses and celebrated 2022 business milestone anniversaries at the annual chamber social event Monday evening, March 14 at the Summit Center in Bancroft. At left: Farmers & Traders Savings Bank (owned by the Kennedy family) was honored for 135 years of service. The bank has been sold to Fidelity Bank &Trust.

Kiwanis Bingo winner

The Noon Kiwanis Bingo Jackpot was won on Monday night, March 7, by Alice Manwarren of Emmetsburg. The jackpot went out on 59 numbers. Noon Kiwanis Bingo is played on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at the Algona Senior Center starting at 6:30 p.m.

Ubben receives Congeniality award

Jessica Ubben received the congeniality award at the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee held last week at Lentz Funeral Home where Ubben works. Ambassador President Bernie Merrill presented Ubben with a plaque after reading a letter from a family she had helped that won her the award.
