Ollie Maverick Schissel

Trace Schissel and Gina Gifford of Algona announce the birth of their son, Ollie Maverick, on August 28, 2022, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. He weighed 9 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long. Ollie is welcomed home by siblings, Madison Gifford, Vanah Gifford, Quinley Schissel and Everley Schissel.

National Voter Registration Month

 

 

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Kossuth County Auditor Tammy Eden and Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate are encouraging Iowans to celebrate National Voter Registration Month in September by registering to vote. Iowans who are already registered are urged to ensure their information is current. Tuesday, September 20 is National Voter Registration Day.

Iowa’s rabbit, squirrel season open

DES MOINES—An estimated 17,000 hunters harvested more than 100,000 cottontail rabbits in 2021. Hunters looking for places to go rabbit or squirrel hunting should use Iowa’s online hunting atlas at www.iowadnr.gov/hunting, with more than 600,000 acres of public land that allows hunting.

Cottontail rabbit season is Sept. 3 to Feb. 28, 2023. The daily limit is 10 rabbits with a possession limit of 20. 

Pheasant survey predicts repeat of excellent hunting

DES MOINES—Results of Iowa’s 2022 pheasant population survey are in and the results were nearly identical to that of 2021, when hunters harvested the highest number of roosters in more than a decade.

The annual August roadside survey found Iowa’s statewide pheasant population to be slightly under 20 birds per 30-mile route.  

Non-irrigated cropland cash rent averages

 

DES MOINES—Non-irrigated cropland cash rent averaged $256 per acre in Iowa during 2022, $23 higher than 2021 according to the latest report released by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Pasture rented for cash averaged $59.50 per acre, $1.50 above 2021.

Kossuth County was at $269 per acre in 2022 and in 2021 it was $237 per acre for non-irrigated cropland cash rent. 

Average corn, soybean, oat, hay prices

DES MOINES—The average price received by farmers for corn during July 2022 in Iowa was $7.44 per bushel according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service - Agricultural Prices report. 

This was 4 cents below the June price but $1.22 above July 2021.

The July 2022 average price received by farmers for soybeans, at $15.50 per bushel, was 70 cents below the June price but $1.10 above the July 2021 price.

LARSEN INDUCTED INTO IOWA 4-H HALL OF FAME

DES MOINES—Julie Larsen of Titonka was inducted into the 2022 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 21.

Schmidt relocates business into renovated historic hotel

WEST BEND—West Bend native Lisa Schmidt returned to her hometown two years ago and embarked on a business venture. Schmidt was living in Dubuque working as a massage therapist, when she saw the Homestead Country Store in West Bend was up for sale. 

In the summer of 2020, she bought the store from Liz Virkler, who had started the business in 2014.

Aaron Hill of Fenton begins cutting the ribs he entered in the 1st Annual Smoke Off held during Lone Rock Fun Days Saturday afternoon, August 27. Hill said this is the first time ever he has smoked ribs and participated in a barbecue contest. He also had a pork loin entry for the event.

School supplies donated

The Kossuth County Farm Bureau “Cram the Cab” event was held during the Kossuth County Fair on August 2-6. Donations of school supplies (crayons, folders, spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, scissors, glue, etc.) were received for the C.A.R.E. Team.
