Toys for Tots

It's that time of year again. The Toys for Tots Committee and Abate of Iowa District 7 has teamed up with Marine Corps League #859 to share the Christmas cheer all around Kossuth County. They will be distributing toys to children of all ages up to 18 years old on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. Last year alone, they helped 89 families totaling 213 children. They hope to do at least that again this year.

Lu Verne Get on board the bus

The Lu Verne Public Library has rented a bus to tour the holiday light display at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Dec.16.

The bus will be leaving from the Lu Verne Public Library at 5:30 p.m.

and return around 8:30 p.m. Sign -up is required as there is limited space on the bus.

Children under five must have an adult present. Please sign up by calling 515-882-3436 or stopping by the library.

This free event is hosted by the Lu Verne Public Library.

Santa Claus in Whittemore

Santa Claus Day will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Whittemore Legion. The holiday event is sponsored by the Whittemore Community Betterment Club. Every child receives a bag of peanuts, candy and apple or orange. Children’s and adult drawings begin at 11 a.m. and must be present to win.

Former Lakota residents among toy exhibitors

Harold and Karen Wagenaar of Sheldon were among the exhibitors showcasing and selling new and old toys during the toy show on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Kossuth County Ag and Motorsports Museum in Algona. Harold has been collecting primarily John Deere tractors and equipment for 55 years. This was the first time the couple had brought his collection to the toy show but they are no strangers to Kossuth County. Harold and Karen (Baumann) are 1964 graduates of Lakota High School.

Water rates, 2024 budget approved by AMU Board following hearings

ALGONA—There were no written or verbal comments received at the three public hearings held at the Algona Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Following the public hearing on the utility budget, the board approved the 2024 budget. The proposed utility budget had been reviewed and discussed at a meeting at the beginning of November.

Santa's Family Workshop

Approximately 150 kids participated in holiday activities at Santa’s Family Workshop Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2 at the Algona First United Methodist Church. The event was sponsored by the Algona Rotary Club.

BODE—In a bustling week at Twin Rivers, students across various grade levels have been actively engaging in a myriad of educational and creative activities.

Preschoolers are immersed in collaborative art projects, crafting elves for the upcoming holiday decorations. Simultaneously, they're honing their vocal talents, practicing festive songs for the eagerly anticipated Holiday Program.

Grinch does community service

 

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office is doing their best to save Christmas by making sure “The Grinch” remains in custody at the Kossuth County Jail. The Grinch cleans, does laundry, works out, plays cards, and talks on the phone. Sheriff Roger Fisher has made sure the Grinch has performed some community service by showing up at North Union Schools to sweep floors, take out the trash and help out in the cafeteria.

Murphy is 1st Chamber drawing winner

Week 1 winner of the holiday prize drawing was Sue Murphy who registered at State 5 Theatre. She chose the $400 gift certificate from Bomgaars. Pictured with Sue is Bomgaars’ employee Liz Adcock. Walker claims top prize In ‘$100,000 Mega Crossword’

 

CLIVE—A northern Iowa man created an unforgettable Thanksgiving memory after scratching off a $100,000 lottery prize.

Allen Walker, 63, of Algona, won the ninth top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “$100,000 Mega Crossword” scratch game. He bought his ticket at Hy-Vee, 1500 Highway 169 N. in Algona.
