Mulligan Stew 600 gallons of Stew gone

Year after year the Mulligan stew event sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 3420 St. Joe is a huge success. The 66th annual event was held on Wednesday, August 17. Beginning at 5:30 a.m. volunteers made about 600 gallons of Mulligan stew which was ready by late afternoon.

Algona FFA represents Iowa at International Envirothon event

OXFORD, OHIO—Five members from the Algona FFA Chapter competed at the annual International Envirothon competition held on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio July 23-30. Members of the Algona FFA team included: Hunter Thilges, Aidan Morris, Ian Fehr, Logan Lentz and Reid Louwagie. The Algona FFA Chapter represented the state of Iowa and placed 31st overall.

What a wonderful world it is when the tomatoes are here! Whether you prefer the sweet little cherry-sized ones or the big, red slicers, they all taste best this time of the season. 

Many people are getting busy putting up salsa, spaghetti sauce and canned tomatoes for winter. Others are just enjoying them fresh while they last!

A story/STEM time for ages 3-7 is planned for Monday, August 29 from 1:15-2:45 p.m. at the Fenton

Cub Scout recruitment night 

Break-in at Bank Plus in Ledyard

LEDYARD—On Aug. 18 at about 6 a.m., the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office received a report of a break-in at Bank Plus in Ledyard. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered that someone had entered the building and attempted to forcefully remove the ATM machine. The suspect then attempted to break the machine open and was unsuccessful.

Celebrate Lone Rock Fun Days this weekend

LONE ROCK—The Lone Rock community has planned a variety of activities for Lone Rock Fun Days this weekend, Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28. 

 

First year for Smoke Off

The events will begin on Saturday with registration from 6 a.m. - noon for the first annual Smoke Off at the Legion building. Saturday events in the park will include the annual Fenton Progressors 4-H Club free throw contest beginning at 10 a.m. Happy train rides begin at 2 p.m. 

Construction updates for city street projects

 

 ALGONA—Construction will continue around the community as the City of Algona works through an intensive street improvement plan. Street reconstruction and mill and overlay projects are underway. Work will continue through the fall on several projects.

More funds available for new trees

 

Rebate amount raised through Residential Tree Program

ALGONA—More funds are now available for residents looking to plant new trees this fall. The City of Algona has increased the rebate amount through the Residential Tree Program to help cover the cost of purchasing new trees.

College Notes

Kramer honored for academics

SHELDON—Kale Kramer of Algona earned honor roll list recognition for the summer semester at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

Students on the honor list are full-time and have achieved an average grade point of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Kramer is a student in the diesel technology program at Northwest Iowa Community College.

Emma Ann Jenson

Taylor Sandy and Bryce Jenson of Bode announce the birth of their daughter, Emma Ann, on August 8, 2022, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. 

DNR seedling orders start

AMES—The DNR State Forest Nursery is gearing up for fall 2022 and spring 2023 seedling orders. Seedlings can be ordered Sept. 1 - May 30. The bare-root (no container, soil root ball or moss included) seedlings are packaged in bundles of 25 inside sealed, labeled, plastic bags. 

Crop progress detailed in report

AMES— Widespread rain across the state resulted in 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending August 21, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included harvesting corn for silage, cutting hay, and applying pesticides.

Rural drinking water survey released

AMES—The results of a new drinking water survey reveal a stark risk of exposure to potentially unhealthy drinking water. Risk profiles were compiled based on recent testing, use of reverse osmosis filters and use of supplemental water sources.
