Classroom added for 2022-2023 school year at West Bend-Mallard

WEST BEND—The 13 students enrolled in the PreK program in the West Bend-Mallard Community School District will attend classes this year in a newly remodeled classroom. Staff were busy last week moving books, chairs and everything else needed for the classroom into the former storage area space that has been completely renovated–new walls, paint and carpet–for the students.

Classroom renovations, more parking at BGS

ALGONA—During the summer school break, many technology updates were completed as well as the renovation of some of the classrooms at Bishop Garrigan Schools. 

Students will see the addition of more large touch screen tvs in the classrooms and there will be more parking spaces available for visitors of the Bishop Garrigan Schools complex in the school year.

Back when I was running competitively, I often raced the half mile (800 meters). There was always a point in the race, if there were runners ahead of me, where I had to make a decision. 

Do I gut it out, stick with the group and hope for an opportunity to end up as the victor? Or, do I ease up my pace and just let the group go?

Mental health liaison introduced at chamber coffee

 

Chief of Police Bo Miller introduced Haley Keihn, the new community liaison heading a new program to combat mental health in Kossuth County. Keihn is an alcohol and drug counselor originally from Eagan, Minn. She and her husband moved to Algona in April. 

New backdrop at the fair

 

ALGONA-—Thanks to the East Fork 4-H Club the Kossuth County Fairgrounds has a new backdrop. Fair goers and 4-H kids took advantage of the sharp new backdrop for photo opportunities.

Wesley public school class of 1958 reunites

Twenty students were in the last class to graduate from Wesley Public School when it closed in 1958. A 64 year class reunion was held during Wesley’s 150th celebration during the Fourth of July weekend.

Classmates met for dinner at Hillside Golf and Dining on Friday evening. Attending were front, from left: Carol Frideres Ludwig, Marilyn Harr Leninger and Elaine Neuroth Hoffman.

An open house in honor of Chuck Studer’s 90th birthday will be held on Sunday, August 28 from 2-4 p.m. at the Britt Event Center.

A card shower is planned in honor of Louise Engstrom’s 90th birthday on September 2.

Northern Iowa Woman Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize

 

 

CLIVE—A northern Iowa woman scratched off a $10,000 lottery prize while out for dinner with friends.

Sara Abbas, 44, of Algona, won the big prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Super 20s” scratch game. She bought her winning ticket at Billie Jo’s Bar & Grill, 4 E. State St. in Algona. She redeemed a $20 prize on a different ticket and decided to use her winnings to buy an additional ticket in the $20 scratch game.
