WEST BEND—Overcoming a three-point deficit heading into the final frame, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team rallied on Friday, Dec. 11 to earn their first victory of the season by the score of 42-37 over the Storm Lake St. Mary’s Panthers.

Wolverine wrestlers top North Union

SWEA CITY—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad topped the North Union Warriors 50-27 on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The purple-and-gold also defeated Sioux Central 56-24 and fell to Pocahontas Area 49-30 that evening while the Warriors topped Sioux Central 42-36 and lost to Pocahontas Area by the score of 48-30.

Morphew, Kruse champs for Warriors

SIBLEY—Both Gavyn Morphew and Trevor Kruse earn individual titles to highlight the performances of the North Union Warriors wrestling squad at the Sibley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 12.
The green-black-and-silver finished in fifth place in the team standings with 150 points as two Warriors placed second, one took third, one was fourth, two more were fifth and two also placed sixth during the day.
 

Bulldogs remain undefeated in duals

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad improved to 10-0 on the year on Saturday, Dec. 12, with three more victories. The red-and-black defeated West Bend-Mallard 65-17, smoked Nevada 78-3 and beat Pocahontas Area 57-17.

North Union girls win in overtime

ARMSTRONG—It took an extra four minutes to decide a winner but the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad outscored Forest City 17-9 in the extra session on Tuesday, Dec. 8, to earn a 54-46 Top of Iowa Conference win and hand the Indians their first loss of the season.

Late 4-point play beats Bulldogs

Charles City converted a rare four-point play with 19 seconds to play to take the lead for good and went on to a 66-62 boys’ basketball non-conference victory on Saturday, Dec. 5 over the Algona Bulldogs.

NU Sports: Wrestlers go 2-2 at duals, girls and boys split with North Iowa

The North Union Warriors wrestling team had a good showing at the Saint Ansgar Duals by going 2-2 on the day on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Warriors defeated Northwood-Kensett 48-18 and Saint Ansgar 33-30 but fell to Lake Mills 66-12 and Clear Lake by the score of 64-12.
North Union raced out to a huge first quarter lead and never looked back in a 78-4 rout of the North Iowa Lady Bison on Friday, Dec. 4 in the Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball opener for both squads.

WB-M Sports: Wolverines wrestlers go 2-1, hoops teams get a win to start the season

The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad opened the 2020-2021 season on Thursday, Dec. 3 at Emmetsburg and went 2-1 on the night.
A big third period was too much for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball team to overcome on Tuesday, Dec. 1 as the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans defeated the purple-and-gold by the score of 48-28 in the season opener for both squads.

Comets slide past Bulldogs

Algona held a two-point halfway through the fourth quarter but Charles City scored eight of the game’s final 10 points on Saturday, Dec. 5 to earn a 33-29 non-conference girls basketball win over the red-and-black.

ALGONA—Algona battled tough against a solid Estherville-Lincoln Central squad on Monday, Nov. 20, but a 12-0 run to start the final quarter put the game away as the visitors went on to a 66-35 non-conference victory.

FORT DODGE—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan was a strong as a gale force wind in a convincing, 91-15, season-opening, non-conference girls basketball win over the St. Edmond Gales on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Late run lifts Golden Bears

    FORT DODGE—Trailing 65-61 with 1:52 to play in the game, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team scored the final nine points of the contest to earn a 70-65 season opening victory on Monday, Nov. 30, over the St. Edmond Gaels.
The visitors built leads as high as 10 points at one point early only to see the home team battle back in the third quarter to tie the game and take the lead in the final eight minutes before the visitors rallied for the win.
 

North Union fends off WB-M

North Union held off a strong fourth quarter rally by a gritty West Bend-Mallard club and earned a hard-fought, 34-33, non-conference, season-opening victory over the purple-and-gold on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The green-black-and-silver held a comfortable 30-23 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of action before the visitors out-scored the Warriors 10-4 in the fourth quarter to make things interesting.
