Bulldog boys host annual Hackbarth Relays

ALGONA—With temperatures hovering in the mid 40’s and the wind howling from the southwest as the runners came to the finish line, the Algona Bulldog boys’ track team played host to seven other teams in the annual Hackbarth Relays on Thursday, April 18.

Winkel First Team All American

Former Bishop Garrigan and DMACC sophomore Angelo Winkel was named to the NJCAA Division II First-Team All-American squad.

Winkel helped lead DMACC to a fifth place showing in the national tournament, compiled a 32-5 record and was named to the all-tournament team.

Angelo was a Region II All-Region first team choice and was named the ICCAC Player of the Year at the end of the season.

Six wins for AHS boys at Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE—Winning six events during the meet, the Algona Bulldog boys track team won six events and placed second overall with 127 points at the Sheryl Maahs Co-Ed Relays.

The meet was moved up 24 hours from April 16 because a threat of incoming weather. Max Nevitt won the shot put with a heave of 49’ 10” and Shirji Patel took the discus by flipping the platter 144’ 4”.

11 Area athletes qualify for 114th Drake Relays

DES MOINES—A total of 11 area track athletes qualified for the 114th running of the Drake Relays this weekend April 25-27 inside Drake Stadium.

Ten athletes from Algona High School and one from West Bend-Mallard will compete over that three day period against the best athletes in the state regardless of the class they compete in.

Henderson cards a 39 for North Union boys

ARMSTRONG—Sophomore Drew Henderson fired a 39 for the North Union Warrior boys golf team in a Top of Iowa Conference triangular match played at the Country Greens Golf Course on Thursday, April 18.

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura placed first in the highly contest match with a 182 as Belmond-Klemme was second with a team total of 184 and North Union finished in third place with a score of 189.

Bulldog girls runner-ups at Sheryl Maahs Relays

SPIRIT LAKE—Algona was edged out by the Spirit Lake girls 148-145 for first place at the annual Sheryl Maahs Relays.

The event was scheduled for April 16 but was moved up 24 hours for the threat of incoming weather the next day. The red-and-black won four events and took second in three more.

Madison Ehrig won the high jump with a season-best jump of 5’ 4” while teammate Macy Knapp took first place in the 800-meter run in 2:29.75.

Nice showing for AHS, BG girls at Lynx Relays

WEBSTER CITY—Both the Algona and Bishop Garrigan girls track squads turned in some nice performances in the Lynx Relays held on Thursday, April 18.

Algona ran away with the team title with a total of 200 while the Golden Bears had a good showing with 84 points to finish in third place overall.

Two gold medal winners for WB-M girls at Lake Mills

LAKE MILLS—A pair of first place showings highlighted the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad at the Bulldog Relays held here on Monday, April 22.

The purple-and-gold ended up in fifth place overall in the 14-team field of teams with 65.5 points. Maddie Fehr won the 100-meter dash in 13.33 as did the 4 x 800-meter relay group of Tyra Schupbach, Abi Schmidt, Allie Fehr and Kierstin Montag with a winning time of 10:28.39.

Clear Lake nips Algona 163-166 in NCC boys match

ALGONA—Despite some cool temperatures and a brisk wind, some very good high school golf was played at the Algona Country Club on Friday, April 19.

The Clear Lake Lions nipped the Algona Bulldog boys’ golf team by the score of 163-166 in a key North Central Conference match.

Warrior boys place fifth at Bison Relays

BUFFALO CENTER—Battling a strong southwest wind, the North Union Warrior boys track team finished in fifth place with 62 points in an eight-team field at Bison Relays on Thursday, April 18.

Senior Colin Rasch was the lone gold medal winner for the green-black-and-silver as he won the shot put with his heave of 49’ 1½”.

Earning silver medals on Thursday was the Warrior sprint medley relay unit of Draven Keeler, Kade Madden, Gavyn Morphew and Preston Guerdet in 1:45.42.

Clear Lake edge AHS girls in NCC match

CLEAR LAKE—Clear Lake edged the Algona Bulldog girls golf team 195-199 in a key North Central Conference match played at the All Vets Golf Course on Friday, April 19.

Abby Brooks earned the medal with a season-best sizzling round of 41 that included five pars, three bogeys and a double bogey while Meghan DeLong of Clear Lake earned the runner-up medal with a score of 42.

Golden Bear golfers fall in league triangular

EAGLE GROVE—Both Bishop Garrigan golf teams competed in a Top of Iowa Conference triangular match that was moved up 24 hours due to the threat of inclement weather moving in on April 16.

The black-and-gold boys finished second with a score of 178 as Garner-Hayfield/Ventura placed first with a team total of 167 and Eagle Grove ended up in third place with a score of 204.

Trap-shoot teams compete at Cylinder + Ventura

 

VENTURA—The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trap-shoot teams competed with five other teams here on Monday, April 22.

The Algona No. 2 squad of Landon Thompson, Walker Eilerts, Elijah Wilhite, Hunter Kollasch and Jaxon Roberts placed first with a score of 228 as the Algona No. 1 team of Cohen Reffer, Chase Roof, Porter Divis, Cody Harms and Aiden Riggert finished second with a score of 227.

Wildcat Relays title goes to Algona girls

HUMBOLDT—Winning five events during the evening, the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad topped an eight-team field with 131 points at the annual Wildcat Relays held on Monday, April 22.

Individual winners for the red-and-black were Madison Ehrig in the high jump with a leap of 5’ 2” and Mara Davis in the 1,500-meter run in 5:22.63.

Lichter, Greteman earn medals for BG

LIVERMORE—Both Avery Lichter and Ben Greteman earned a medal on Thursday, April 18 as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys and girls golf teams hosted a Top of Iowa Conference triangular match at the Spring Valley Golf Course.

For the girls, Bishop Garrigan won a tight match with a 215, one stroke less than Lake Mills’ 216 and Eagle Grove finished in third place with a score of 232.

AHS boys win non-conference triangular at E-ville

ESTHERVILLE—Algona won a non-conference boys’ golf triangular played at the Estherville Golf & Country Club on April 22.

The red-and-black had the low total of the day with a score of 166 as Estherville-Lincoln Central took second place with a 171 and Spirit Lake finished in third place with a 175.

Alex Manske took home the medal for first place with his score of 40 while Nathan Manske of Algona and Jaizik Miller of Spirit Lake tied for second place with a round of 41.
