Bulldogs plate 10 runs in the fifth

Algona exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to blow open a 7-5 game and went onto a 17-5 North Central Conference baseball win over the St. Edmond Gaels in a game played in Fort Dodge on Monday, June 4.
The red-and-black opened the game’s scoring in the second inning with four runs with the big blow in the frame being a two-run double off the bat of Matt Grein.

Golden Bears place 7th at state; Capesius 24th

A young Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf squad finished in seventh place as a team at the Class 1A state golf tournament played at the America Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30.
The black-and-gold compiled a two-day total of 778 that consisted of a 382 on Tuesday along with a score of 396 on Wednesday. Iowa Valley won the state title with a 740 on the fifth place tiebreaker over New London, who also had a 740.

Meis pitches Bears past Broncos

John Meis hurled six strong innings and teammate Drew Bacha laced a double and a single to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ baseball squad to a 9-2 Top of Iowa Conference win over Belmond-Klemme in a game played at Belmond on Friday, May 25.

Perfect week ends in walk-off win

Coming into the 2018 season with a large group of returning letter winners, the expectations for the Algona Bulldogs softball team were high. On Friday, the squad completed a 4-0 week with an extra inning walk-off win.
Teylor Rindone singled in pinch runner Alyssa Hentges in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the red-and-black a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in a North Central Conference contest played in Algona on Friday, May 25.

Arndorfer 3rd at state golf

Bishop Garrigan’s Andrew Arndorfer completed a great sophomore season with a third place overall finish at the Class 1A boys’ state golf tournament played at the Westwood Golf Club in Newton on May 24-25.
The Golden Bears finished seventh in the team race with a team total of 708 as the squad fired a total of 352 on Thursday and came back with a 356 on Friday.

Bauer sets 800 state mark

Riley Bauer set a new state record in the 800-meter run and the North Union Warrior boys’ track squad finished in sixth place as a team in the Class 1A state track meet ran in Des Moines at the Drake Stadium on May 17-19.
Bauer took the 800-meter run on Saturday morning with a record breaking clocking of 1:52.10, breaking the old mark of 1:54.11 by Beau Dietschneider of BCL-UW set in 2007.

One final golden heave

Class 3A state runner 2017. 2018 Drake Relays runner-up. Now the title of 2018 Class 3A state champion in the shot put can be added to resume of Algona’s Dominick Etherington.
Etherington waited until his sixth and final throw to toss the steel ball 61’ 0 ¾” to win the state title. He was second after the prelims with a toss of 57’ 10 ¾” on his first throw of the day.

Rachel Fehr is 1A state runner-up

An incredible freshman year for West Bend-Mallard’s Rachel Fehr ended with three great performances at the Class 1A state track meet in Des Moines last weekend.
The talented young lady finished second in the 400-meter dash before anchoring the purple-and-gold’s sprint medley relay unit to third place finish and the 4x800-meter relay quartet to a seventh place finish as she earned three medals in her first time running in the beautiful blue oval.

Tiebreaker determines regional champ

It came down to the fifth score to determine a winner in the first round of the Class 1A regional golf tournament at the Spring Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 14.
After 18 holes of play, both Mason City Newman and Bishop Garrigan were deadlocked with identical scores of 430, but the black-and-gold were named the winner via the fifth score tiebreaker.

AHS boys qualify nine events for state

It was a good night of performances for the Algona Bulldog boys’ track squad as the team qualified seven athletes in nine different events for the Class 3A state meet this weekend in Des Moines.
Eight of nine of the red-and-black’s qualifiers are ranked in the top 10 performances, giving the squad the potential for another great showing at the state meet.

BGHS girls place 2nd at regionals

Bishop Garrigan advanced to state in six different events and finished in second place at the Class 1A regional track meet in Sioux Rapids on Thursday, May 10 with 117 points to highlight the performances of three area girls’ track teams at the meet.
The black-and-gold scored 117 team points as that was only topped by Central Lyon’s total of 123 points. The Golden Bears will send nine different girls in the six events this weekend in Des Moines.

Lovstad places 7th in NCC

A seventh place individual finish from Hallie Lovstad highlighted the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ golf squad at the North Central Conference tournament played at the Mason City Country Club on Monday, May 7.
The red-and-black finished fifth in the eight-team meet as a team with a score of 440 as Clear Lake was crowned the conference champion with their team total of 387.

Warrior boys win six events; take 3rd; Garrigan finishes 5th

North Union won six different events and placed third overall with 97 points at the Top of Iowa Conference boys’ track meet held at Lake Mills on Monday, May 7. Bishop Garrigan finished in fifth place with 48 team points and won one event.
Riley Bauer won four events for the Warriors by taking the 400-meter dash in 50.83, the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.08, the 1,600-meter run in 4:33.38 and the 3,200-meter run with a clocking of 9;55.59.

Arndorfer wins title

Bishop Garrigan sophomore Andrew Arndorfer sizzled around the Britt Country Club on Monday, May 7 with a three-under par score of 69 to win the individual title at the boys’ Top of Iowa Conference tournament.
Arndorfer shot a 33-36—69 on the par 72 course as the sophomore recorded an eagle on Hole No. 4, birdies on Holes No. 2, 5, 8, 10 and 13 to go along with eight pars during his day.

AHS girls win shuttle hurdle relay

A conference championship by the shuttle hurdle relay highlighted the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad in the North Central Conference track meet held on Monday, May 7 at Webster City.
The red-and-black finished in third place in the team race with 130 team points as Iowa Falls-Alden captured the conference title with 146 and Humboldt was the runner-up with a team total of 139 points.

Berte is CYO runner-up

Lexie Berte was the runner-up medalist to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf team to a second place finish in the annual CYO Meet held at the Lakeside Golf Course in Des Moines on Wednesday, April 25.
