ALGONA—Proposed education savings accounts (ESAs) and the subsequent shift of property tax dollars potentially to private education outlets drew passionate comments during a legislative forum Saturday morning, Feb. 27, at Algona City Hall.

How AMU insulated Algona during electric crisis

ALGONA—Algona Municipal Utilities’ reaction during the electric generation and distribution crisis that struck a wide swath of the nation’s midsection was outlined during the monthly meeting of the utility’s board of trustees last week.
While some parts of the region experienced short-term blackouts, and other areas of the country experienced a total loss of power for days and even weeks, Algona Municipal Utilities (AMU) customers did not go without power.

ALGONA—Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is celebrating its 111 year. BSA began in 1910 with four goals in mind for young boys, citizenship, character, personal fitness and leadership. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today and for life.

Cart-Racing for food pantry

ALGONA—There were 11 teams contributing to Kossuth County Farm Bureau’s annual shopping cart race fundraiser that was held at Hy-Vee on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with six teams actually competing in the race. Each team gives $250 for the chance to win the traveling trophy and bragging rights. This is the 21st year that Kossuth County Farm Bureau has hosted the event.

Fish fry fans line up in Whittemore

WHITTEMORE—People arrived early and lined up for more than a city block as St. Michael’s Catholic Church kicked off the first Friday of Lent with its traditional fish fry Friday, Feb. 19.
Serving was expected to begin at 5 p.m., but by 4:45 there was a line of cars forming and serving began. By 5 p.m., there were two side-by-side lines on the street, each a block long, with traffic control volunteers alternating vehicles to the drive-through line.
 

Two express interest in open council seat

ALGONA—Algona City Council members could potentially start the process of adding to their number at their meeting next Monday, March 1.
One of the city’s at-large council seats is open after Brooke Sudol resigned effective Feb. 15. The council published a notice of intent to fill the position by appointment and set a deadline of Tuesday, Feb. 23, to accept applications of interest. Two people responded.
 

Trustees OK bid, set hearing on tight budget

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center (KRHC) trustees have approved a bid and awarded a contract for a reconstruction project.
Henkel Construction of Mason City was awarded the contract after it had the low bid of $1,238,300, which was lower than a bid of $1,277,200 from Woodruff Construction of Fort Dodge.

BGHS presidents says school having great year

ALGONA—The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce held a Chamber Coffee at Bishop Garrigan High School on Friday, Feb. 19. The event was rescheduled from earlier in the month, when bad weather wiped it out during Catholic Schools Week.
Kim Thilges, president of the chamber Ambassadors, welcomed everyone and expressed “how nice it was to finally get back to something normal.” 

COVID, Valentine's Day cookies, students and nursing home residents make a story

ALGONA—The AHS Student Senate sold cookies for Valentine’s Day, and residents of local nursing homes were at the center of attention.

AHS, AMS announce honor rolls

ALGONA—Algona High School and Algona Middle School announced the names of students who qualified for honor rolls – A or B – during the recently completed fall semester.

Iowa Lakes acts on budget, other matters

ESTHERVILLE—The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, for their regularly scheduled board meeting. A public hearing was held for the FY 2022 published budget. During the public hearing, Jeff Soper, chief financial officer, shared, “The levy rate will see a decrease of approximately 1.8 cents per thousand, as compared to the previous year.”

BGHS Quiz Bowl Team 10th in Country

ALGONA—The Bishop Garrigan quiz bowl team finished 10th in the nation in the Knowledge Master contest, in which they competed online in early February.
