Number of Kossuth residents vaccinated climbing, local infection rate lower than area, boosters available

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Sixty percent of Kossuth County adults are now fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 coronavirus.

That’s according to statistics posted at the Iowa coronavirus website on Monday of this week.

Overall, 48.4 percent of the population of the county is fully vaccinated. That figure is 56.4 per-cent of all those age 12 and over, 60 percent of those age 18 and over and 81.6 percent of those age 65 and over.

Pies for Eyes, give and they will receive

The Algona Lions Club held their annual Pies for Eyes fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 19.

Chamber coffee at Northwest Bank

The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce held their coffee at Northwest Bank on Friday, Nov. 19.

President Pat Berte introduced the staff and spoke of the progress made on the banks remodel. Berte reported that they took advantage of local people for the renovations.

Bishop Garrigan students selected for honor choir

Six students from Bishop Garrigan had the honor of singing in the 2021 5th and 6th grade Opus Honor Choir on Thursday, Nov. 18.

This is a very prestigious choir that selects the best young singers in the state of Iowa to gather together in Ames for a festival and concert. More than 2,100 students auditioned for 720 positions in the four different Opus Honor Choirs.

Pastor Devine thanks Eastern Star

ALGONA—The Algona Chapter #68 Order of the Eastern Star at the monthly meeting on Nov. 9 welcomed Pastor Debra Devine. Pastor Debra has recently completed her course of study after spending the last 10 years taking classes to be certified as an ordained minister in The United Methodist Church.

Devine was informed three years ago about the ESTARL fund through the Iowa Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Pack 29 learns about community service

The Pack 29 Wolf Den Cub Scouts visited Kossuth Regional Health Center on Nov. 16.

The Cub Scouts were learning about serving their community, and they met with Brian Spry and other EMTs to learn about their service to their community.

Feather party at Wesley

The Wesley American Legion and Sons of the American Legion yearly feather party was well attended Nov. 20 at the community center. Activities included bingo, paddle wheel, door prizes and food was available.

 

Corn, soybean production seen ahead of 2020

DES MOINES—Iowa corn production is forecast at 2.50 billion bushels according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service - Crop Production report. 

Based on conditions as of Nov. 1, yields are expected to average 201.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the Oct. 1 forecast but up 24.0 bushels per acre from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 12.9 million acres, with an estimated 12.5 million acres to be harvested for grain. 

State, district FFA officers at North Union

The North Union FFA Chapter welcomed Iowa FFA State Officer, Maddy Stevenson and North Central District Officer Josie Kelly to a chapter visit on Nov. 12. While at the high school, she led interactive workshops for the agriculture education classes. She also talked with the agricultural education instructor, Natalee Dippel, about the future of the North Union FFA Chapter.

Legion Auxiliary quilt fundraiser underway

The American Legion Auxiliary from the Lone Rock Unit has quilt tickets available for a drawing in December. The quilt fundraiser is the Auxiliary’s only fundraiser. Handmade coordinating pillowcases go with the queen size contemporary design quilt.  

Santa arrives in Fenton on Saturday, Dec. 11

FENTON—The Fenton Community Club will sponsor Santa Day on Saturday, Dec. 11. Santa Claus will arrive at the Fenton Legion by fire truck at 1 p.m. and be available for photos. The Fenton Forwards 4-H Club will host a craft time also beginning at 1 p.m. 

At 2 p.m. there will be a kids’ drawing for 12 sleds sponsored by Sentral Insurance. Adult drawings for hams, turkeys and packages of bacon will also be held. Coffee, lemonade, cookies and bars will be served.

American Legion feather party fun

More than 150 people attended the American Legion feather party in Lone Rock on Saturday, Nov. 20. In the photo are Jeff, Jorie and Julie Hartman. Julie said her family has been attending the party since the 1960s.
