Dear Editor,

I am writing to thank Algona-area residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season.

Throwback: Be a Boy Scout

Clippings from the 1948 Algona Upper Des Moines newspaper archives

Part of being a Boy Scout is being prepared for any situation. This helps with managing life’s challenges.

The Daily Umbrella

I am not upset

I realize I am supposed to be upset over our government’s classified documents the Department of Justice seized from President Joe Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware, home.

I am not.

I realize I am also supposed to be upset over the classified documents that former president Donald Trump stored in his personal property at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, home.

I am not.

Caught by the Gospel

By Rev. Thomas Cowell - Pastor, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Burt; Partnership Pastor, Trinity Lutheran Church

The Gospel lesson which we heard at Trinity, Algona and St. John’s, Burt this Sunday was the account of Jesus calling four disciples to be fishers of men. Here is that text for your reference:

Throwback: A better future

Who remembers this from the Jan. 22, 1976 Algona Upper Des Moines newspaper ...

Tuesday morning management was waiting on the issuance of the court injunction to limit the number of pickets at the gate and to permit entry. They had an ex-school bus at the National Guard Armory, where highway patrol cars had gathered, waiting to transport management and supervisory personnel to the plant after the injunction was served.

Wanted, A Leader -- Much as we dislike to admit it, a love for truth coupled with a hope that some good may come from this admission, compels us to state that Algona is sadly in need of a leader. By a leader we mean some one in the community to whom all others instinctively look to take charge of the advance guard in all matters of public importance. Such a man is a leader and cannot be otherwise. Where can such a one be found?

Holocaust biography harrowing and inspiring

For years, Celina Karp Biniaz lived a quiet life in Iowa. Little did those around her realize the horrors she had experienced in the Nazi Holocaust.

The many lives of pizza

By Shane Goodman

I like pizza. Thin. Thick. Doesn’t matter. I prefer it mostly with meat and cheese, but you can throw in some veggies if you really want to. I can’t eat pizza like I used to, but that goes for a lot of foods these days. Meanwhile, I find it quite challenging to resist a slice of hot, gooey pizza.

Our Kossuth County - Improve your digital skills at the Algona Public Library

By Lori Walton

Library Director

Last fall the Algona Public Library began offering basic computer classes and the feedback we received from participants was overwhelmingly positive. People liked the small group sizes, as it was easy to ask questions. They also enjoyed the hands-on approach that allowed participants to use a computer during the classes. Most of all, they encouraged us to keep offering these basic computer sessions.

Quality Friends

Friends can come in all shapes and sizes, but it seems that we have quality categories for many of them. We have family friends, close friends, distant friends, loyal friends, fast friends and, since 1978, we may have a BFF (Best Friend Forever).  It is popularly expected notion to say, “I married my best friend,” but we may also have bad or disloyal friends to whom the saying goes, “With friends like you, who needs enemies?”

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor:

Dear Representative Stone,

Two types of people

I am convinced that there are two types of people in this world — those who like dogs and those who don’t. For most of my life, I belonged in the “those who like dogs” category. Then, for about a year, I was in the “those who don’t like dogs” group. And now I am back in the prior class. At least I think so.
