North Union defeats Eagles 9-4

North Union defeated West Hancock 9-4 in a Top of Iowa Conference softball contest June 9. A five-run fourth inning was the difference in the league contest.
Each squad scored a run in the opening frame, and the score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth inning when the home team pushed across five runs for a 6-1 advantage.

Bulldogs place second in Algona Classic

Algona received two strong pitching performances and placed second in the annual Algona Classic softball tournament June 8. The red and black topped Eagle Grove 10-2 in the opener but lost to North Butler by a score of 1-0 in the finals.
The championship game was a pitcher's duel, as the Bearcats scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Kyia Johnson.

Lake mills defeats Golden Bears 8-2

Lake Mills placed two runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in an 8-2 Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears in the league contest June 7.
The contest remained at 2-0 until the fifth inning when the visitors added another tally for a 3-0 advantage. The black and gold got on the scoreboard in the bottom frame when John Joyce singled and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 3-1.

Devries, Shryock repeat winners at track

Kaytee Devries of Spencer, in the sport compacts, and Kelly Shryock of Fertile, in the stock cars, won for the second time this summer to highlight night number four at the Kossuth County Speedway June 6.
The night saw a total of 67 cars signed in for an exciting night of racing, with the stock car class leading the way with 17 drivers. The hobby stock class was right behind with 15 cars.

BGHS hurdlers earn medals at state

With al four runners graduated from a squad that qualified for the state tournament last spring, the Bishop Garrigan shuttle hurdle quartet capped it off by placing eighth and earning medals at the Class 1A state track meet over the weekend.
The unit of Gracie Rosenmeyer, Reese Rosenmeyer, Laurel Degen and Emma Grandgenett crossed the finish line in 1:11.31 to earn their medals.

Soaring to new heights

North Union's Elliott Hagebock picked a great time to post a career best in the high jump as the Warrior senior cleard the bar at 6'6" to win the Class 1A state title Friday.
"It was just an unreal feeling; it has not really sunk in yet that it actually happened," said Hagebock after the event.

Distant double for Engen at state

Trey Engen of Algona proved he was the best distance runner in Class 3A this season as the red-and-black senior completed the "distant double" by winning the state title in both the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs on the beautiful blue oval of Drake Stadium in Des Moines this past weekend.

Golden Girl

Last year as a freshman in the Class 1A state track meet, West Bend Mallard's Rachel Fehr was nipped at the finish line for a state title in the 400 meter dash.
Fast forward 360 days and the Wolverine sophomore made sure the same scenario did not repeat itself. She broke the tape first in the event with her school record clocking of 56.92 to become the first purple-and-gold female in the school's history to capture a state title.

Holmes 10th in 100-meter hurdles

Abbey Holmes placed 10th in the 100-meter hurdles to highlight the performance of the Algona Bulldogs girls squad at the Class 3A state track meet May 16-18.
Holmes cleared the 10 barrieres set at 30 inches with her clocking of 15.88 and missed qualifying for the finals in the event by .03 for the red and black.

Golden Bear boys earn trio of medals at state

Three members of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears boys track squad earned individual medals at the Class 1A state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines over the past weekend.
The black and gold finished in 21st place overall in the team race with a score of 13 points. George-Little Rock, who was at the squad's district meet, won the state title with a total of 52 team points.

New AHS wall of fame members announced

Four new members will join the Algona High School Wall of Fame, the school recently announced.
New inductees are Roger Barr, Gene Hunt, the 1966 wrestling team and the 1996-1997 girls golf teams.

Trap shoot teams hit the road

The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trap-shoot squads traveled to Garner May 20 with 20 full and partial teams competing and seven schools or shooting clubs.
The Algona High School squad had the best score of the day with 234. Saint Ansgar was the runner-up with 223, and Bishop Garrigan ended in third place with 220.

BGHS boys headed back to state

Led by the individual medalist, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys golf team was the runner-up in the Class 1A district tournament May 17 at the Pheasant Run Golf Course and advanced to the stae tournament in Newton.
The black and gold had a team total of 347 that was only topped by Grundy Center's score of 334. AGWSR ended up in third place with a team total of 347.

AHS boys send five to state

A handful of Algona Bulldog boys track members are headed to Des Moines this weeks with hopes of bringing home some hardware. The squad qualified those young men in six different events at the Class 3A district meet May 10.
A tight four-way battle in team standings for the district title saw Decorah narrowly take the crown with 118 points. Webster City was right behind with 117 points, and Clear Lake was third with 111.5, just ahead of Algona's team total of 111 points.

Fehr to state in four events

West Bend-Mallard sophomore Rachel Fehr qualified for the Class 1A state track meet in four different events to highlight the performances of three area girls teams at the regional meet May 10.
The Wolverines qualified six young women in four events ast he Golden Bears advanced nine in four events, and the Warriors qualifed five young women in two events.

Area Class 1A boys qualify in 7 events

Three area boys track teams competed in the Class 1A district meet on May 10 and qualified 10 young men in seven different events.
Bishop Garrigan had eight athletes qualify in five different events, and North Union added two young men in a pair of events for this week's action inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
