Rykhus wins “Bumble Bee Nationals”

ALGONA—It is a race that LeCenter, Mn.’s Mick Rykhus has been trying to win since it began. On Thursday, July 3 at the Kossuth County Speedway, Rykhus finally won the “Bumble Bee Nationals” as he took the first place winnings of $1,000 after capturing the sport compacts’ feature event.

Levi Volkert and Charles Prime brought the 18-car field to flag-stand to take the green flag as each of the 18 drivers was guaranteed $100 to start the feature.

Throwback: Campfire Girls

According to the Sept. 10, 1918 article in the Kossuth County Advance, seen below,  the Campfire Girls took 2nd place in the parade that year with their canoe float. At left is a photo of the 55th anniversary reunion of one group of Luhosho Campfire Girls in Algona in June 1971.

The Kossuth County Agricultural and Motorsports Museum is now open for visitors every Saturday and Sunday, or by appointment. The admission is $7 per person and provides access to all the exhibits as well as the Benschoter Train Depot and the Iowa Hall of Fame and Racing Museum.

Who do you stop to listen to?

Back when I was in elementary school, 40-something years ago, there were a series of creative ads on TV for a big wall street brokerage firm.  Normally kids don’t think much about ads for big stockbrokers.  But these ads were different.  The tagline was simple, clear and memorable, “When EF Hutton talks, people listen.”  Kid’s on the playground even used that line.

Fireworks result in accidental death

On July l, 2025, at about 9:10 p.m., the Kossuth County Law Enforcement Center received a 911 call of a fireworks accident in Whittemore at the corner of 5th Street and Kossuth Avenue. It was reported that a male subject was unconscious and had received injuries while shooting off fireworks.

Traffic stop leads to charges

On June 30, 2025 at about 8:40 p.m., a Kossuth County Deputy conducted a lawful traffic stop near 210th Avenue and 310th Street. A Kossuth County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit assisted on the stop and the K-9 alerted to the presence of drugs within the vehicle. Deputies searched the vehicle and located illegal substances and items known to be drug paraphernalia.
