Call's art visits Algona

Mary Emaline Call's impressionist paintings will again join the Founders' Day celebrations in Algona.
Stinson Prairie Arts hosts a reception for this exhibit on Thursday, July 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Algona Publishing Company, 14 E. Nebraska St. in Algona.

Mayor uses a tree to encapsulate past

According to Algona Mayor Lynn Kueck, there is a tree outside Bryant Elementary that is at least 125 years old. he wants to use that tree to help tell a history of everything that tree might have seen.
During the Friday Founders' Day at 3:30 p.m., the mayor will begin with the history of Asa and Sarah Call. He'll talk about the Heckert family; he'll go on to talk about Bryant Elementary and finish with the Boldridge Rose Garden.

Assessment prescribes changes

The Algona Downtown Assessment, a document put together by the Iowa Downtown Resource Center, was presented to the Algona City Council last week.

Future of Burt's Pool

A meeting ultimately led to the forming of a committee by Burt community members to secure estimates for the city pool project.
Lifeguards Callie Monson and Elyssa Marlow raised their hands when the city council asked who might want to take part in the committee. The pair pointed out that if the pool were to close, kids in Burt would have nothing to do, and they would be more likely to get into trouble.

Nielsen is Band Day grand marshall

The Band Day committee of the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce announced the selection of Fritz Nielsen as grand marshal of the 71st annual Band Day Festival.

K/PACEDC county breakfast features author

The Kossuth/Palo Alto County Economic Development Corporation holds its annual county-wide breakfast Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 7 a.m. at St. Michael's Parish Center in Whittemore.
This year's breakfast topic is Becoming a Better Leader: How to Overcome Life's Challenges to Live Focused Every Day. Returning as guest speaker is Holly Hoffman.

Jesus says, 'Take a break!'

I recently returned from a week of vacation. It had been about six months since I last took some time off, and my week away was welcome physically, mentally and spiritually. It reminded me that time to rest, relax and recharge is important to my well-being and my ability to do my work (in this case, ministry) effectively.

Few but fun

Laughter from a meeting room echoes into the hallway at Buffalo Creek Activity Center. The volume belies the reality that it is only eight people playing 500.
"We have about eight to 10 attend during the summer," said Yvonne Rippentrop, who is in charge of the senior citizens group in Titionka. The group meets the second Monday of each month at the activity center on the northeast side of town.

Titonka street project nears completion

Manholes and sidewalk entries to intersections are under reconstruction in some areas of Titonka, part of a street project approved by the city council.
Heartland Asphalt has been in the community for several weeks. City Clerk Linda Hamilton said up to $400,000 was approved for the project, but she expected the costs will come in lower than that.

Portraits of Kossuth photo contest returns

The Kossuth County Conservation Board's annual Portraits of Kossuth photography contest is now open. The deadline is 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 26.
It must be a nature photo: weather, wildlife, landscapes, etc. and taken in Kossuth County in the last 12 months. Photos will be displayed at the Franklin County Fair.

ABATE rally rolls into area

The 35th annual ABATE Freedom Rally begins this week with a plethora of events and live music scheduled.
Some of the events include a sled pull and duck races. The Freedom Rally is also hosting its third annual Run to the Grotto, according to Jeramie Barrett, Freedom Rally events coordinator.

Most successful Party in the Park

Algona Area Chamber of Commerce's first Party in the Park of 2019 was a success, Chamber Executive Director Vicki Mallory said.
"There are always multiple activities for people to choose from," said Mallory. "Anytime that you're providing food, and there's no charge, that brings a lot of people out."

Art from all over

Victoria Koestler, a coordinator, confirmed that Lee Reams, a painter in oils who has won awards, will be at Fine Art in the Park Saturday, July 13 in Algona.
Reams is one of the farthest traveling artists, hailing from Tulsa, Okla., according to Koestler. There is another artist coming from Texas.
