Purple Heart recipients will be honored

WHITTEMORE—The Sons of the Whittemore American Legion Post 425 will honor Purple Heart recipients on Sunday, August 7 which is National Purple Heart Day.

The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Whittemore Legion Hall. Following an outdoor program the Sons of the Legion will provide sandwiches and cheesy potatoes. This event is open to the public.

Chris Buscher will celebrate her 80th birthday on August 9. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor.

Menning receives Outstanding Faculty Award

SIOUX CITY—Community Colleges for Iowa selected Iowa Lakes Community College employees Corey Menning and Cindy Oviatt to receive the Outstanding Faculty and Staff awards respectively at the annual trustee conference on July 21. 

The Outstanding Faculty and Staff awards recognize faculty, staff, leaders and trustees from Iowa's 15 community colleges dedicated to excellence and accessible education.

Sentral Class of 1972 Reunites for Summer Reunion

Members of the Sentral High School Class of 1972 were together for a 50 year reunion on July 30 at the North Star Lounge in Fenton. The class had 44 graduates with two deceased, Heidee Krause and Bill Thompson. 

The reunion included a lot of reminiscing and shared stories and photos. A side-by-side trail ride and meal was held the previous night hosted by Denny and Darlene Bollig at their home in rural Seneca. 

Caiden Buckner to take part in Envision's National  Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM

 

ALGONA—This summer, Caiden Buckner from Algona joined outstanding elementary school students from across the country to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF). 

Fun at Fenton Sweet Corn Days

 

 

Classic cars lined the streets around the community park, the Happy train made laps around the block, kids of all ages were jumping in the bouncy house and laughter and excitement could be heard blocks away. All to celebrate the town of Fenton’s annual party held July 30 and 31. 

 

Chamber Coffee at Central Financial

The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee was held at Central Financial Group in Algona on Friday, July 22.

Ribbon Cutting at Quilted Steeple

A ribbon cutting was held at The Quilted Steeple’s new quilt shop at the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee on Friday, July 29. Julie Dodds, owner of the The Quilted Steeple in rural Lone Rock, recently added a quilt shop to the remodeled church. Dodds told about the history of the steeple, the quilt retreats and introduced quilt store staff members.

ossuth County Fair Week is here! Be sure to check out the schedule of activities, programs and entertainment happening at the fairgrounds. A big thanks to the fair board and volunteers who help make it all happen! As a former 4-H club member years ago, I have great memories of the fair in Buchanan County. I always love to hear stories of what items people took to the fair years ago. 

Master Gardener floral arranging workshop planned for August 9

ALGONA—Kossuth County Master Gardeners, ISU Extension and Outreach of Kossuth County and Bloom Floral are hosting a floral arranging workshop on August 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the upstairs portion of Feed Mill Coffee in Algona. The workshop will be led by floral expert, Dan Brabec, and will include hands-on instruction.

Last Party in the Park of summer is Aug. 10

ALGONA—The community has one more chance to enjoy Party in the Park this summer as the final event for the 2022 season is set for Wednesday, August 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the Carnegie Library lawn on the corner of Nebraska and Dodge Streets in Algona. 

The theme will be Take Your Best Shot and will feature music, archery demonstrations, balloon pop dart game, cornhole boards and more kids fun activities.

Kossuth County Fair Board and Kossuth County Ag Museum Board will honor (the late) Howard Omdahl at the chamber coffee at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5 at the Kossuth County Ag Museum on the fairgrounds.

Summit holds CO2 pipeline meeting in Goldfield

GOLDFIELD—Jim Pirolli, Chief Commercial Officer for Summit Carbon Solutions, recently held a meeting with one of Summit’s partners, Corn LP in Goldfield.

The program focused on what ethanol does for the economy and agriculture and making the connection on what Summit plans to do for carbon capture and storage.
