Three nights of racing salute Veterans

 

The annual Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans races will begin on July 26 at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. and races at 7 p.m. The second night will be July 27 at the Kossuth County Speedway at the fairgrounds in Algona. Hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7:15. The last chance to support Veterans at the races will be July 29 at the Boone Speedway. Hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Algona Public Library receives $20,000 national grant from American Library Association

 

ALGONA—The Algona Public Library has been selected to receive a $20,000 national competitive grant from the American Library Association as part of the Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities initiative.  The purpose of the grant is for small and rural libraries to improve and increase the accessibility of facilities, services, and programs to better serve people with disabilities.

There are many people in our community who would have loved to tell about their involvement with the winner of the Posthumous Heritage Award, and it is my privilege to be the one who gets to tell you about Maryanna Sarazine and her contributions to our community.  One of the things we did together was to go door knocking for a political candidate, and it is the unusual person who can make that fun!

Karen Dannewitz, (left) and her sister Jane Nettleton, (right), played sisters Eleanor Twogood and Barbara Haggard who formed the Haggard-Twogood Charitable Trust that helps fund many cultural events that enrich the community.

 

Bruce and Karen Meurer portrayed Joseph and Helen Paxson. Helen organized the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Joseph was a local businessman.

Bulldogs fight cancer

The Algona Bulldogs girls' softball and boys' baseball teams raised money for the Kossuth County Cancer Support Foundation. The donation will be used to assist those battling cancer in Kossuth County.

ALGONA—If you happen to be outside the Wilcox Performing Arts Center on July 15 and 16 don’t be concerned if you hear singing that rattles the windows and leaves ringing in your ears, it’s only Winnifred (Loralei Brady), who doesn’t know how strong she is, especially her lung power, telling the audience, she is shy.

Art in the Park

Lynn Kueck has been giving a historical tour of Wildhaven during Founders’ Day for more than 10 years. Kueck tells the stories of Ambrose and Asa Call settling the area, the Sioux Indian Nation that had been here for more than 600 years and the unpleasant history of how the natives were treated.
