Founders’ Day adds World Food Festival

ALGONA—Celebrate new flavors and cultures at the World Food Festival on the Saturday of Founders’ Day weekend in Algona.

ALGONA—The Kossuth Shrine Club, Algona Founders’ Day committee and MOJO Productions with the help of local businesses, will be hosting a Car Cruise-In during Algona’s Founder’s Day celebration on July 7 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in downtown Algona.

MOJO Productions will be playing music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. There will be drawings for gift certificates to restaurants throughout the evening.

Yeoman, Studer receive honor

The Kossuth County Historical Society held a special reception last Saturday, June 10 to honor Nancy Yeoman and Rosa Lee Studer for their dedication and countless hours of volunteer work for the society. Both volunteers have been with the society since it’s rejuvenation in 2012. Studer spent many years as curator  organizing displays, hosting visitors, giving tours, cataloging inventory, helping with events and programs and serving as a board member and secretary.

Ribbon cutting at Kiley’s Grooming Pawlor

Algona Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting celebration and chamber coffee at Kiley’s Grooming Pawlor in downtown Algona on Friday, June 16. MaKiley Pesicka (holding the scissor) owns the business located at 212 E. State Street. Family members and friends joined chamber members at the ribbon cutting for the dog grooming business. Pesicka graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College last year with degrees to be a veterinary technician and a professional dog groomer.

Speech-language pathologist Scott joins team at KRHC

ALGONA—Speech-language pathologist Emily Scott M.S., CFY-SLP has joined the speech therapy team at Kossuth Regional Health Center. Scott joins speech therapist Nicole Kuecker, MA, CCC-SLP, providing speech therapy services in the occupational therapy department.

Empty nesters have full house

ALGONA—Randy and Judy Lien have a bird’s eye view of three baby birds living in their flower pot right outside there home office window.

The Liens have had birds nest under the eaves of their garage, in the trees and other places on their property but this is the first time they have noticed them in a flower pot. Although the home is small it must be one of the most beautiful places to grow up.

Up close look at the animals

North Union FFA members and FFA Advisor Sarah Manderfeld brought a petting zoo to the North Union Elementary in Fenton at the end of the school year.

All the classes had the opportunity to hold and touch the animals and ask the FFA members questions about them.

Following the visits, the classes enjoyed either a snow cone or mini-donut treat from a mobile food truck, funded by the student activity account from school fundraisers.

Farming and gardening activity

North Central Iowa Ag in the Classroom staff recently had the opportunity to teach kids about farming and gardening at the Algona Public Library through reading books and completing a Garden in a Cup activity during their weekly story hour.

North Central Iowa Ag in the Classroom plans to visit area libraries this summer with the programs Garden in a Cup and Magic Nuudles. There will be stories and an activity led by the NCI AITC educators.

Call it superstition or a Murphy’s Law approach, but a multi-year drought can bring out odd behaviors in some of us. Whatever it takes to attract more rain! For instance, if it looks a bit cloudy for the farmers market, we leave our tent at home to try and make the drops fall.

ALGONA—Ryan Merrill graduated from Algona High School in 2021, and he obtained his commercial drone license while attending college at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. Now, he has turned a hobby into a business with Merrill Drone Services.

Interns collecting for Project Hope

 

Interns from the K/PACEDC Intern Program traveled to the Kossuth County and Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors meetings where they presented the Project Hope Proclamation. Both counties’ boards voted unanimously to sign the weeks of June 18 through July 1 as official Project Hope weeks.

NEW Cooperative Foundation donates to local 4-H clubs

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The NEW Cooperative Foundation continues their commitment to supporting local 4-H youth. Recently, the foundation donated $52,020 to 22 county extension and outreach offices, which will support 3,468 individual 4-H members.

Vaske receives scholarship

 

This was the first year Gold-Eagle Coop has offered scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing higher education. The scholarship committee enjoyed reading through the 11 applications submitted from many of the area schools and selecting two deserving candidates for a scholarship of $500 each.

Chamber golf

The annual Algona Area Chamber of Commerce golf outing will be held on Friday, June 23 beginning at 1 p.m. at River Road Golf Club and Algona Country Club.

Storytime at Call State Park

Storytime at Call State Park Shelterhouse is planned for 10 a.m. on Friday, June 23. In case of rain the storytime will be held at the Algona Public Library.
