Recognition deadline set for Century, Heritage Farms

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encourages eligible Iowa farm owners to apply for Century or Heritage Farm recognition as part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program was created by the Department and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to honor families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years, respectively.

DAR makes plans for 100th year event

ALGONA— Members of the Algona Chapter of DAR met online in January to discuss plans for the 100th anniversary celebration scheduled for May 11, 2024. Details will be announced in the near future.

Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa scholarship application deadline extended

 The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa (CFNEIA) is extending the submission deadline for its scholarship application process to April 10. This change is due to continued delays of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). 

The deadline extension prioritizes students and allows them to provide this important information used in determining financial need as part of the selection process for some Community Foundation scholarships.

Helmers erupts for career-high 45 points in win

POCAHONTAS—Junior Ben Helmers poured in a career-high 45 points to help the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team to an 83-58 non-conference victory on Monday, Feb. 5 over the Pocahontas Area Indians.

Helmers connected on 17 of 29 overall field goals, including two of seven behind the three-point arc. He went nine of 13 from the charity stripe while teammate Alex Manske contributed 26 points and grabbed 12 caroms.

ISB Community Crusaders will host a Valentine’s Day bake sale on Wed. Feb. 14 beginning at 8:30 a.m. while supplies last at both Algona locations of Iowa State Bank. Free-will donation with all proceeds donated to local charities chosen by the employee charity, the ISB Community Crusaders.

Students in Algona’s Model UN program have had a busy year. Starting at the beginning of the school year, and lasting until the middle of fall, these students have committed themselves to success in the program.

On Sept. 28, 2023, students traveled to NIACC to compete in the Regional Conference. Students who performed well were chosen as either alternates or outstanding delegates.
