Medalist honors go to Gibson Menke

LIVERMORE—Gibson Menke earned medalist honors as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ golf team swept a Top of Iowa Conference triangular held at the Spring Valley Golf Course on Tuesday, April 23.

The black-and-gold compiled the low team total of the day with a 174 as Garner-Hayfield/Ventura closely followed with a 176 and West Hancock finished in third place with a 191.

AHS girls golf squad takes 3rd at Spencer Invitational

SPENCER—Traveling to the west on Monday, April 29, the Algona Bulldog girls golf squad finished in third place overall at the Spencer Girls Invitational played at the Spencer Golf & Country Club.

The red-and-black ended the day with a team total of 417 that was topped only by Spencer’s score of 367 and Estherville-Lincoln Central was second with a 402 as nine different teams competed in the tournament.

Wolverine girls end up 9th in Twin Lakes meet

STORM LAKE—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ golf squad finished in ninth place in the annual Twin Lakes Conference tournament held on Monday, April 29 at the Lake Creek Golf Course just west of Storm Lake.

East Sac County won the conference title with a team score of 407 as the young Wolverines ended up in ninth place with a team total of 477, just one stroke behind G-T/R-A.

WB-M boys drop Twin Lakes quad

GRAETTINGER—In a Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular played on Thursday, April 25, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ golf team placed fourth.

Emmetsburg had the low team total of the day with a 164 followed by Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in second with 180 as Pocahontas Area was third with a 196 and West Bend-Mallard finished in fourth with a score of 204.

AHS science fair has been in full speed lately with the students going to several events. Algona High School students participated in the Western Iowa Science & Engineering Fair, WISEF, at Buena Vista University on March 23. They also competed at State Science & Technology Fair of Iowa at Iowa State University on April 4 and 5.

West Bend/Mallard’s 13th Annual Achievement Foundation Night took place on the evening of March 21st.

Northwest Iowa RSVP Spotlights K-12 Success

During National Volunteer Month, Northwest Iowa RSVP is drawing attention to different focus areas emphasized in the program for grant funding. K-12 Success, which includes the Pen Pals, Reading Buddies, and Literacy Partners programs, is a key focus area in Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, and Palo Alto counties.

AMU asks for water customer’s assistance in water line inventory

Algona Municipal Utilities will be asking its water customers for assistance completing a water service line inventory to identify materials used in service lines. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires every Iowa water system to complete this inventory.  “The IDNR is requesting this information so they can get an understanding of the materials used in service lines” said Jarrod Sturtz, Water Operations Manager at AMU.

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center celebrated our valuable volunteers last week with an appreciation breakfast and recognized all past, current and new volunteers for their care and commitment to helping others in the community.

AHS band student awarded outstanding soloist

On Saturday, March 23 at Clear Lake High School, 41 Algona Band students performed in solos and ensembles at the Iowa High School Music Association’s State Solo/Small Ensemble festival. Junior, Chance Studer, french horn, was awarded a Division I (superior rating) and was awarded the Outstanding Soloist Honor at his site, earning him the invitation to perform in the Outstanding Performance Showcase to be held Tuesday, May 14 in the Music Hall of Iowa State University in Ames.
