Procedures on how Iowa nominates new district court judges are probably going to change. Republican majorities in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate are planning to send Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds a bill that would alter the makeup of the nominating commissions that select finalists for openings.
When a judicial district in Iowa has an opening for a district court judge, people apply for the position. A committee with equal numbers appointed by the governor and elected by attorneys in Iowa, and a sitting senior judge as chair of the group, go through the applications, recommend finalists and send that list to the governor, who then appoints one.
