Born a child, yet a king

This last Sunday marked the first week of Advent. The word advent is from the Latin word “adventus” which means “coming.” Christians may outwardly celebrate Advent during the Christmas season but all year long we look forward to His coming in our hearts. We celebrate not only the coming of God in the flesh as the babe in the manger, but we are also looking forward to the coming of Jesus Christ as King.

Throwback: Remembering Pearl Harbor

Tuesday, December 7, will mark the 35th anniversary of the bombing of the Pearl Harbor naval station and the Philippines by the Japanese. It was a cold and snowy Sunday afternoon in Iowa when the shocking news was first blared over radios everywhere. Confirmation of the attack came the following day by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who declared war by the United States.

Why I put up my Christmas tree a month ago

Two cannons

Letter to the Editor:

The picture of a WWI cannon on the Kossuth County court house lawn show an antique. There were two Cannons. One on each side of the large public bandstand. It was with a floor about four foot high. Concerts were twice each week. Many people came to hear them.

It is believed by many that the two already antique WWI cannons were sold to a collector and exist today.

Student loan debt

Dear Editor and people of Algona:

When the Federal Government started garnishment of student loans through the federal income tax system, this action would give the President of the United States the lawful right to forgive the loans, period. And anyone who was garnished qualifies for forgiveness.

Since the holidays and cold season tend to come hand in hand, let’s review how to treat colds with over-the-counter medicine and easy home remedies.

On Nov. 11 communities all over the country came together to honor those who have served in the military. To show appreciation for the sacrifices they and their families have made to ensure a better quality of life for everyone.

It is also an opportunity for Veterans to share their knowledge and experiences to teach future generations.
