AHS Bulldogs win in extra innings

POCAHONTAS—After letting a 6-2 lead get away in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Algona Bulldogs softball squad erupted for eight runs in the top of the eighth frame to earn a 14-7 season opening non-conference softball win over Pocahontas Area.

Shryock double winner week two at track

ALGONA—Kelly Shryock was a double feature winner in modified and stock car classes to highlight Week No. 2 of dirt track racing on Thursday, May 19 at the Kossuth County Speedway.

The second evening of dirt track racing at the track drew a total of 60 cars as the hobby stock class led the way with 15 cars followed by the sport mods with both the stock car and sport compacts class having a total of 10 cars.

BGHS edges AHS 10-8 in cross-town baseball contest

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally on Friday, May 20 for a 10-8 non-conference baseball win over cross-town rival Algona.

The two teams traded the lead throughout the game before the black-and-gold tallied three times in the sixth to rally from an 8-7 deficit.

Von Bank places 12th at 1A Regional

NEWELL—Olivia Von Bank placed 12th overall and did not advance to state in the Class 1A Regional golf meet held on Wednesday, May 18 at the Newell Golf Club.

Von Bank shot an 18-hole total of 98 to tie for 12th place with Alta-Aurelia’s Shae Lockin. Sidney Tritz of Storm Lake St. Mary’s had the low score of the day with an 86 as Grace Erickson of Newell-Fonda was second with an 89.

Golden Bears drop pair of games on Saturday

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan dropped a pair of games to non-conference baseball opponents on Saturday, May 21 as the black-and-gold fell to Webster City by the score of 8-1 and Remsen St. Mary’s by the score of 10-1.

In the loss to the Lynx in the opener, the Golden Bears were limited to just a pair of singles from Justin Bauer and Jacob Leerar. Collin Casey scored the squad’s only run as Hollis Bode had the lone RBI.

Golden Bears win wild 14-13 contest

BELMOND—Bishop Garrigan won a wild 14-13 Top of Iowa Conference softball slugfest over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos on Monday, May 23 in the season opener for both squads.

Trailing 3-0, the black-and-gold plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning to deadlock the contest only to see the home team score a single run in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 advantage.

Bulldog boys fall in extra innings

SPIRIT LAKE—Spirit Lake pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a walk-off 5-4 non-conference baseball victory on Monday, May 23 over the Algona Bulldogs.

The home team scored first in the bottom of the first stanza but the Bulldogs came back to tie the contest in the top of the second. Both squads scored twice in the third frame before Algona scored a single run in the fourth and the Indians forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Errors doom Bulldogs in home loss

ALGONA—Eight early Algona errors led to 11 Spencer runs in the first three innings and the Tigers went onto an 11-7 non-conference baseball victory over the red-and-black on Thursday, May 19.

The visitors plated six runs in the opening frame, two more in the second and three in third while the Bulldogs plated two runs in the first and sixth frames along with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

Bulldogs drop tough 3-2 season opener

CHARLES CITY—Charles City scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a 3-2 non-conference season opening baseball victory over the Algona Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 17.

The visitors scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for a 2-0 advantage. The Comets got on the scoreboard with a single run in the sixth frame and plated the two runs in the seventh inning for the walk-off win.

North Union boys’ golfers take 3rd at sectionals

CLARION—Narrowing missing advancing to the district tournament by just three strokes, the North Union Warrior boys’ golf team placed third at the Class 2A sectional golf tournament played at the Clarmond Country Club on Wednesday, May 11.

The green-black-and-silver had a team total of 337 as the two district qualifiers were Grundy Center with a score of 312 and Osage with a total of 334.

Von Bank advances in regional play

GRAETTINGER—Olivia Von Bank of North Union placed sixth overall to advance to the Class 1A regional golf tournament at Newell on May 18.

The green-black-and-silver played on Friday, May 13 at the Hillcrest Golf & Country Club in the first round of regional play as the Warriors had just two golfers and no team score.

BG boys’ golfers finish 6th at district meet

LIVERMORE—Hosting nine other schools and eight individuals in the Class 1A district golf tournament at the Spring Valley Golf Course, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ golf team placed sixth overall with a team total of 359.

Lake Mills was the district champion with a team total of 331 as North Butler also advanced to next week’s state tournament with a team score of 340.

Algona boys’ golfers shoot season low

ORANGE CITY—Despite shooting their best 18-hole score of the season, the 2022 season came to an end for the Algona Bulldog boys’ golf team at the Class 3A sectional tournament played at the Landsmeer Golf Club on Wednesday, May 11.

Algona girls’ golf team third at Storm Lake Invite

STORM LAKE—On Saturday, May 14, the Algona Bulldog girls’ golf squad finished in third place at the six-team Storm Lake Invitational played at the Lake Creek Golf & Country Club.

The red-and-black had a team total of 452 that was topped only by the Humboldt Wildcats with a score of 394 and the Carroll Tigers with a team total of 436.

Six Algona girls headed to state track meet

GILBERT—Six Algona Bulldog girls’ track members, including four freshmen, have qualified for the Class 3A state track meet this weekend in Des Moines.

The red-and-black will compete in five different events with those six young ladies after competing in the Class 3A regional track meet on Thursday, May 12 as the first and second place winners in each event were automatic qualifiers.

BGHS boys qualify for state in three events

NORTHWOOD—Three area boys’ track teams qualified 11 athletes in eight different events on Thursday, May 12 at the Class 1A district track meet.

Bishop Garrigan qualified five athletes in three events as North Union had two qualifiers in three events and West Bend-Mallard will send four boys in a pair of different events.
