Gaels rally past Algona with strong fourth period

ALGONA—St. Edmond outscored Algona 19-9 in the final eight minutes to rally for a 57-52 North Central Conference boys’ basketball victory on Friday, Jan. 5.

The red-and-black took a 43-38 lead into the fourth quarter before the visitors rallied. St. Edmond led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter while the Bulldogs took a 25-2 advantage to the locker room at intermission.

Forest City topples Golden Bear boys 69-58

FOREST CITY—Forest City made their first six shots of the evening and never trailed in a 69-58 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 2 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The home team raced out to a 13-3 lead after the contest’s first three minutes and held a 20-13 advantage at the conclusion of the first period.

The Indians increased their lead to 39-23 at intermission and also had a 69-41 advantage heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Wolverine girls improve to 6-2 overall

 

WEST BEND—Opening the New Year with a non-conference contest on Thursday, Jan. 4, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad earned a 59-9 rout over the Paton-Churdan Chargers.

The home team started fast by making 11 of 13 field goal attempts in the opening frame and came up with nine steals in building a huge 24-4 lead at the end of the first period.

WB-M boys basketball team earns third win

WEST BEND—Three West Bend-Mallard boys’ basketball players recorded a double-double to lead the purple-and-gold to a 53-44 non-conference victory on Thursday, Jan. 4 over Paton-Churdan.

Senior Jaxon Zaugg poured in a game-high 22 points and yanked down 14 rebounds while freshman Abner Zaugg had 11 points and 10 caroms with senior Landon Montag contributing 10 points and 10 boards.

Caden Weber drilled a three-pointer with 1.5 remaining to give the Algona Bulldogs a thrilling 50-49 non-conference boys’ basketball win over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Warriors snap Lake Mills’ 54-game league winning streak

LAKE MILLS—North Union led the entire game except for a ten-second period in the opening quarter in a key Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball 47-43 victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The win snapped a 54-game consecutive conference winning streak by the purple-and-gold as the two teams are now tied with Forest City with a 5-1 league record for first place.

CLEAR LAKE—Algona outscored Clear Lake 22-7 in a crucial second quarter and went onto a 57-46 win in a battle of unbeaten ranked Class 3A girls’ basketball squads on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Bulldog boys go 2-1 at Garner

GARNER—Wrapping up the pre-Christmas part of their schedule with a non-conference quadrangular at Garner, the Algona Bulldogs went 2-1 on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The red-and-black defeated Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 48-28. Cohen Reffer, Isaac Wilson, Tate Slagle and Gavin Goche each won by fall while teammates Elijah Wilhite, Ethan Bradford, Barrett Morgan and Ashton Moreno won by forfeit.

No. 8 Bishop Garrigan improves to 9-1 overall

ALGONA—Eighth-ranked Bishop Garrigan moved into the Christmas break with an overall record of 9-1 with the latest victory a 71-41 win over the North Iowa Lady Bison.

The black-and-gold is tied for the Top of Iowa Conference lead at 6-0 with Forest City with their only loss coming at Class 1A state runner-up Newell-Fonda.

North Union girls notch seventh win of season

ARMSTRONG—Notching their seventh win of the season on Thursday, Dec. 21, the North union Warrior girls’ basketball squad defeated the Eagle Grove Eagles 48-34 in Top of Iowa Conference action.

The green-black-and-silver led the whole way and had a 13-4 lead at the end of the first period. The Warriors increased their advantage to 34-13 at halftime and led 42-24 as the fourth quarter began.

WB-M girls are 5-2 heading into X-mas break

EAGLE GROVE—West Bend-Mallard heads into the Christmas break with a 5-2 overall mark and the Wolverine girls are 2-0 in Twin Lakes Conference contests.

The latest victory came on Monday, Dec. 18 with an exciting 39-36 non-conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles as the visitors outscored Eagle Grove 25-18 in the second half for the victory.

Golden Bears top Bison 72-46 in conference tilt

ALGONA—A big second half led the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys; basketball team to a 72-46 Top of Iowa Conference victory on Tuesday, Dec. 19 over the North Iowa Bison.

The black-and-gold outscored the Bison 40-16 in the second half to break open a tight 32-30 contest at intermission.

The Golden Bears trailed 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and took a 50-38 advantage into the final eight minutes of action.

Unbeaten Clear Lake tops Bulldogs 67-54

CLEAR LAKE—Clear Lake remained undefeated on the year on Tuesday, Dec. 19 with a 67-54 victory over the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team in a key North Central Conference contest.

The home team outscored the red-and-black 21-13 in the final eight minutes to break open a close game and earned their seventh overall and second conference win of the season.

WB-M boys drop non-conference road tilt

EAGLE GROVE—Ending their pre-Christmas schedule on the road on Monday, Dec. 18, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball team were defeated by the Eagle Grove Eagles by the score of 74-49.

The visitors trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter as the Eagles held a 32-21 advantage at intermission. The home team also led 52-30 heading into the final eight minutes of plays.

Warrior wrestlers go 1-2 at Rockford

ROCKFORD—Finishing their pre-Christmas schedule on the road on Thursday, Dec. 21, the North Union Warriors wrestling team went 1-2 in a Top of Iowa quadrangular.

The green-black-and-silver defeated Rockford 60-12 but lost to Nashua-Plainfield 66-15 and Forest City by the score of 54-30.

Both Gavyn Morphew (144) and Kolton Walter (285) went 3-0 on the evening while teammates Jackson Hutchinson (132), Liam Kollasch (138) and Lucas Dreyer (175) went 2-1.

 

North Union girls defeat  Lake Mills 48-36

LAKE MILLS—North Union earned a Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory on Tuesday, Dec. 19 with a hard-fought 48-36 win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The visitors took a 13-5 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and held a 26-17 advantage at halftime. The green-black-and-silver also led 44-28 heading into the fourth period of play.
