Slagle pitches Bulldogs past No. 4 Heelan 4-2

FORT DODGE—A pair of University of Iowa baseball recruits met up in an old fashioned pitcher’s duel on Friday, July 5 at Harlan Rogers Park as Algona’s junior Tate Slagle outdueled Bishop Heelan’s senior Jason Bleeker to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-2 non-conference victory over the fourth-ranked Crusaders.

North Union walks off Garrigan 4-3

SWEA CITY—Shallie Walders’ single off the glove of a diving attempt by Abbie Capesius plated Brylie Deim in the bottom of the seventh inning as the North Union Warriors edged the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears 4-3 on Wednesday, July 3.

The game became meaningless in the Top of Iowa Conference softball standings two hours earlier as the black-and-gold pounded Eagle Grove to claim the league title outright with a 14-2 mark while the Warriors finished second with a 13-3 record.

Three home runs lead North Union past Eagles

SWEA CITY—Two home runs by Beth Streuber and one from Maisey Bierstedt led the North Union Warrior softball squad to a 14-2 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the West Hancock Eagles on Wednesday, July 3.

Streuber hit a two-run blast in the first inning and two batters later Bierstedt clubbed a two-run belt while Streuber drilled a three-run bomb to end the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

BGHS outright conference champs

SWEA CITY—Bishop Garrigan wrapped up solo possession of the Top of Iowa Conference softball title on Wednesday, July 3 with a 13-3 pasting of the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The contest was moved to Swea City because of wet grounds at Bishop Garrigan. Abbie Capesius blasted a three-run home run to break a 3-3 dead lock in a nine-run eruption in the bottom of the fifth inning as the contest went just six innings.

Forest City edges Algona softball squad 4-1

ALGONA—In the regular season finale for both squads, the Forest City Indians defeated the Algona Bulldogs softball team by the final score of 4-1 on Monday, July 8. Five Bulldog errors led to three unearned runs in the contest.

The visitors scored single runs in both the second and fifth stanzas and added two more tallies in the top of the sixth frame as the Bulldogs scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Walk off win for BGHS softball

ALGONA—Hanna Merron scored the winning run as Sacha Alesch reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off 7-6 win for Bishop Garrigan on Monday, July 8 in a non-conference softball game over Osage.

With the victory, the black-and-gold finished the regular season with an overall record of 16-7 while Osage fell to a record of 21-9.

Errors hurt Bulldogs in loss to Spencer

SPENCER—Spencer took advantage of five errors committed by the Algona defense to hand the Bulldogs a 13-7 non-conference loss on Monday, July 8 in the regular season finale for both squads.

The visitors plated single runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 advantage before the Tigers used a couple of those errors to score six times for a 6-2 lead.

St. Edmond edges Wolverines 6-5

FORT DODGE—St. Edmond scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory on Wednesday, July 3 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in the regular season finale for both teams.

The home team scored three times in the bottom of the first stanza for an early 3-0 advantage and added another tally in the third.

Lions hand Algona first NCC loss

ALGONA—Clear Lake handed the North Central Conference baseball champions their first conference loss on Wednesday, July 3 as the black-and-gold topped the Algona Bulldogs 5-3.

The Lions scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings and two more in the fourth while the red-and-black plated one run in the third stanza and two tallies in the bottom of the fifth inning and left two runners stranded in scoring position in the seventh.

Algona baseball wins NCC title

CLARION—With one game still remaining, the Algona Bulldog baseball team wrapped up the North Central Conference title with a 16-6 victory over the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowboys on Wednesday, June 26.

The win improved the red-and-black’s league mark to 13-0, three games ahead of second place Humboldt while the Bulldogs are now 23-4 overall and the winners of 16 straight games.

Bishop Garrigan baseball claims league crown

BRITT—After sharing the Top of Iowa Conference baseball crown last season with Forest City, Bishop Garrigan won the title outright in 2024 with a 13-2, five-inning win over the West Hancock Eagles on Wednesday, June 26.

The victory improved the black-and-gold’s conference record to 14-0 with two games remaining, three games ahead of second place Forest City and are now 18-5 overall on the year.

Golden Bears earn share of league softball title

BRITT—With a pair of Top of Iowa Conference games still remaining, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear softball squad clinched at least a share of the league title with a 16-1, three-inning rout against the West Hancock Eagles.

The black-and-gold are now 13-1 in the conference with two contests remaining and a victory in either game will give them the conference title outright as the team is 14-6 overall.

Six straight wins for Bishop Garrigan baseball

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan continued to gear up for a post-season run with a 15-0 non-conference drubbing on Thursday, June 27 over the St. Edmond Gaels in baseball action.

The black-and-gold plated three runs in the bottom of the second frame, added seven more in the third and ended the contest early with seven tallies in the bottom of the fourth inning.

WB-M softball closes season with a victory

MANSON—The West Bend-Mallard junior varsity softball squad closed out their season with a 13-9 win over Manson Northwest Webster on Monday, July 1. The purple-and-gold finished the year with an overall record of 8-8-1.

The Wolverines scored three runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings and one more in the seventh as the home team plated three runs in the third, fifth and seventh frames.

Algona cruises past Cowgirls 12-1

CLARION—Algona scored five times in the top of the first inning and never looked back in a 12-1, five-inning victory on Wednesday, June 20 over the Clarion-Goldfield Cowgirls softball squad.

The visitors also added a single run in the top of the second stanza along with two tallies in the fourth and four more in the fifth to end the contest early as the Cowgirls scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth frame.
