Besch wins 100-yard butterfly

FORT DODGE—The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys swim team concluded the pre-Christmas part of their 2024-2025 season with a dual meet on Thursday, Dec. 19.

The black-and-gold fell to Marshalltown by the score of 70-14 and lost to Fort Dodge 64-28 as Marshalltown also defeated Fort Dodge 76-18.

Gael boys topple Algona 69-53

ALGONA—St. Edmond pulled away in the second half on Tuesday, Dec. 17 to earn a 69-53 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over the Algona Bulldogs.

The home team played well the entire first half and held a 17-12 lead at the conclusion of the first period. The red-and-black continued to hold the lead until a late St. Edmond run before intermission gave the green-and-white a 30-27 lead at halftime.

Wolverine boys earn second win of season

ALTA—Heading into the Christmas break on a positive note, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team earned a 48-39 Twin Lakes Conference win on Friday, Dec. 20 over the Alta-Aurelia Warriors.

The win improves the purple-and-gold’s overall record to 2-5 and the Wolverines are now 2-1 in conference games while the Warriors fell to 2-6 overall and are now 1-2 in the league.

AHS girls remain perfect in NCC play

WEBSTER CITY—Remaining perfect in North Central Conference play, the Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad earned a 63-35 road win on Friday, Dec. 20 over the Webster City Lynx.

The red-and-black scored the first 18 points of the game and never looked back as the home team’s first points came with 5:22 left in the first half.

WB-M girls are a perfect 7-0

ALTA—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls basketball squad remained unbeaten on the season with a hard-fought 57-51 Twin Lakes Conference win over the Alta-Aurelia Warriors on Friday, Dec. 20.

The purple-and-gold will head into the Christmas break with a perfect 7-0 overall record and are tied for the lead in the conference at 3-0 while the Warriors fell to 3-6 overall and are 1-2 in the league.

Bulldog girls earn non-conference road win

MASON CITY—Algona went on the road on Thursday, Dec. 19 in non-conference girls basketball play and came home with a 64-27 victory over the Mason City Newman Knights.

The visitors took a 14-9 lead at the conclusion of the first period, extended the advantage to 36-14 at intermission and took a commanding 50-20 lead into the fourth stanza.

No. 8 Algona rolls to 77-34 NCC win

ALGONA—Eighth-ranked Algona raced out to a huge first quarter lead and never looked back in a 77-34 North Central Conference girls basketball victory over the St. Edmond Gaels on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The red-and-black started fast by jumping out to a 21-3 at the conclusion of the first stanza. The home team increased their advantage to 36-10 at intermission and took a 57-29 lead into the final eight minutes of action.

Bollinger wins 285 title at Fuhrman Invitational

CHEROKEE—Senior Brennen Bollinger placed first to highlight the performances of the North Union Warriors wrestling team at the Paul Fuhrman Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Bollinger opened the day with a fall in 1:12 over Jordan Livermore of Sioux Central and followed that up with a pin in 3:20 over Jacob Kraft of Kingsley-Pierson in the semi-finals.

Algona 2nd, WB-M 6th at DeLeon Invitational

BRITT—Algona finished second and West Bend-Mallard placed sixth at the Al DeLeon Invitational held on Saturday, Dec. 21. The red-and-black compiled 215 points and the Wolverines scored 59 points during the day.

AHS places third at Fort Dodge Invitational

FORT DODGE—Crowning one champion, the Algona Bulldog girls wrestling squad finished in third place overall with 139.5 points at the Fort Dodge Invitational held on Friday, Dec. 20. Laura Stohr was the lone champion for the red-and-black as she won four matches to take the title at 110 pounds.

BG girls defeat Cardinals 64-42

GARNER—Bishop Garrigan overcame a sluggish first period and went onto a 64-42 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Dec. 17 over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

The black-and-gold trailed 15-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter before rebounding to take a 32-27 lead to the locker room at halftime. The visitors also led 50-33 after three quarters of basketball.

Thomas’ double-double leads to Garrigan to win

GARNER—Sophomore Amaury Thomas recorded a double-double to help the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team to a 68-43 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Thomas poured in 20 points and yanked down 10 rebounds in the contest for the black-and-gold, who improved to 3-0 in the league.

NU girls grab league road win

BELMOND—North Union picked up a hard-fought Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball road victory on Tuesday, Dec. 17 over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos by the final score of 48-43.

The contest was tight throughout as the visitors led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, held a 15-14 advantage at intermission and led 32-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

North Iowa tops Wolverine boys 80-49

BUFFALO CENTER—North Iowa shot the basketball well in the opening frame by building a big lead and never looked back in an 80-49 non-conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Thursday, Dec. 19.

The blue-and-white raced out to a huge 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 46-21 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Bison also led 59-36 as the fourth period began.

Lynx second half rally steals win from AHS

WEBSTER CITY—Webster City outscored Algona 35-24 in the second half to rally for a 54-47 North Central Conference boys basketball victory on Friday, Dec. 20 over the red-and-black.

The Bulldogs led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and took a 23-19 advantage to the locker room at intermission as the visitors never trailed in the game’s first 16 minutes.

AHS boys wrestlers earn pair of NCC wins

ALGONA—Algona improved to 3-0 in North Central Conference boys wrestling matches after picking up a pair of league victories on Thursday, Dec. 19.

The red-and-black defeated Iowa Falls-Alden 72-3 before handing the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowboys a conference loss by the final score of 42-17.

Thomas Zabka, Isaac Wilson, Barrett Morgan, Ashton Moreno, Tate Slagle and Tayten Rummel all went 2-0 during the evening for the Bulldogs.
