Experienced players highlight all-area softball team

Experience is the main ingredient on the 17th Annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area softball team. Just the exact opposite of last week’s baseball squad, 11 members of the unit return from last year with seven players making the team for the first time.

Alt places ninth at USAT Nationals

Algona High School sophomore Dylan Alt placed ninth at the USAT Nationals triathlons in West Chester, Ohio on the weekend of July 29-31 with a time of 33:47. The event consists of a 375 meter swim, a 10K bike jaunt and a 2.5K run.

Six-foot trophies awaited feature winners

ALGONA—At the end of each feature race on Thursday, Aug. 5, the winners earned a six-foot tall trophy to take home with them.

It was the unique first place prize for the drivers at the Kossuth County Speedway for the annual Harken/Hovinga Memorial Race.

All-Area Baseball Team

A group of seven talented players will return for the second time to the 17th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area baseball team this summer.

Garrett Goche, Jensen Eischen and Stren Crouch of Algona along with Bishop Garrigan’s Hollis Bode, Andrew Fogarty and Garrett Heying and Carter Morphew of North Union all return to the first team.

Crouch named to Academic All-State team

Algona senior outfielder Stren Crouch was named to the first-team academic all-state team by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association. The 36th annual team was selected by a panel of coaches. The first team consists of the top 21 players regardless of class, nominated by their coaches, who demonstrate outstanding academic, moral and athletic characteristics. The next 23 players receive a second team all-academic certificate.

Mike Smith wins Jess Weishaar Memorial Race

ALGONA—Lake City’s Mike Smith has been most dominant driver in the hobby stock class in 2022 at the Kossuth County Speedway.

Nothing changed on Thursday, July 28 as Smith topped a 26-car field to win the $1,000 first place check as the winner of the third annual Jess Weishaar Memorial Race. The event was the opening of four-night tour of the Hobby Stock Midseason Summer Shootout.

Wilton Beavers defeat Warriors 14-1 in class 2A state semi-finals

FORT DODGE—During the 2022 season, North Union junior Emily Meyer was the most dominating pitcher in the area as she allowed a total of just 26 runs this season and struck out 312 batters in 184 innings of work.

North Union places fourth at state softball

FORT DODGE—Top-ranked Central Springs and second-ranked North Union met in the regular season on June 23 in Swea City and hoped to see one another again in the Class 2A state softball tournament.

The two squads did meet in Fort Dodge at the state tourney but it was not where they wanted to be as they knocked heads on Friday, July 22 in the consolation finals.

ALGONA—It was great night that started early with a loud bang that most people thought was fireworks and ended in the wee hours of the next morning with a louder bang after a great evening of exciting dirt track racing.

The sixth annual “Salute to Veterans” Hunting with Heroes night on Thursday, July 22 at the Kossuth County Speedway was another home run.

Hunting With Heroes returns to Algona on July 21

ALGONA—It is an event entering its sixth year and continues to be a huge event growing bigger every year. The annual “Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night” is coming to the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, July 21.

The series will be a three-track tour on three different nights for the second straight summer as it will begin on Wednesday, July 20 at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer.

Fraker’s defensive gems led Warriors to opening round win

FORT DODGE—All year long second-ranked North Union has used a high-powered offense and strong pitching to compile an overall season record of 32-2.

But on Tuesday, July 19 in the opening round of the Class 2A state softball tournament, the green-black-and-silver needed a pair of defensive gems from catcher Shelby Fraker to eek out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons.

CLARION—Two Bishop Garrigan pitchers slowed down the high-powered Mason City Newman offense on Tuesday, July 12 in the Class 1A sub-state final but Knight junior pitcher Doug Taylor silenced the Golden Bears’ bats in a 2-0 victory.

Algona falls 5-2 to No. 1 Mustangs in regional final

CEDAR FALLS—Algona gave top-ranked Mount Vernon a huge scare before the Mustangs scored five times in their final two at bats to rally from a 1-0 deficit to pull out a 5-2 win over the young red-and-black squad.

The Class 3A regional final contest took place on Tuesday, July 12 at the Robinson Dresser Sports Complex as the two teams met halfway to play the contest.
