Bulldogs roll past G-H/Ventura 34-7

GARNER—Led by a dominating defensive performance the first three quarters, the Algona Bulldogs’ football team rolled to a 34-7 non-district football victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 9.

The visitors limited the Cardinals to minus 10 total yards for the first third quarters as the home team’s only first down in the first 36 minutes came on a face mask penalty.

Mediacom Communications will provide live-action television coverage of the first college baseball game to play at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, on Sept. 16, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. Mediacom video subscribers can watch pregame activities, coach interviews and the first pitch thrown by Tony Oliva before Briar Cliff University and Luther College play on Mediacom’s MC22 (Ch. 22, 822) at 6 p.m.

Swim team drops a pair of matches

BOONE—The Algona swim team dropped a pair of matches on the road on Thursday, Sept. 8. The red-and-black fell to Fort Dodge by the score 82-19 and to Sioux City Metro by the score of 83-15. Sioux City Metro defeated Fort Dodge 54-44 in the other match of the night.

Reese Taylor won the diving competition for the Bulldogs with her score of 168.35. Placing fourth individually for Algona was Brooke Ludwig in the 200-yard freestyle race.

Warriors fall to E-LC in five sets

ESTHERVILLE—North Union dropped a five-set non-conference volleyball match to Estherville-Lincoln Central on Thursday, Sept. 8.

The visitors took the opening two sets by identical scores of 25-21. But the Midgettes fought back to take the next three games by the scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 15-13.

Libby Stevens led the green-black-and-silver in set assists with 37 as Beth Streuber had two along with one dig each from Ella Ulrich, Olivia Von Bank and Olivia Merrill.

Golden Bears earn league road victory

GARNER—Bishop Garrigan went east down Highway 18 in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball play on Thursday, Sept. 8 and came back home with a league victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals in three straight games.

The black-and-gold took the opening set by the score of 25-17 before winning a tightly contested second game by the count of 27-25. The Golden Bears then ended the match by taking the third set by the score of 25-21.

Warriors go 0-3 at Spirit Lake tourney

SPIRIT LAKE—North Union lost a trio of matches at the Spirit Lake volleyball tournament that was played on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The green-black-and-silver lost to Spirit Lake by the score of 21-19 and 21-11, to Charles City 21-12 and 21-14 and to 10th ranked (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda by the scores of 18-21, 21-15 and 9-15.

Bulldogs go 2-3 in Algona Classic

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball squad hosted five other schools on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Algona Classic as the red-and-black compiled a 2-3 record during the day.

Sioux Center, ranked fourth in Class 3A, won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark as Lake Mills placed second with a 4-1 mark.

Reffer leads Algona Bulldogs past Clear Lake

ALGONA—Porter Reffer’s big evening help lead the Algona Bulldogs’ football team to a 27-16 non-district victory on Friday, Sept. 2 over the Clear Lake Lions.

Reffer accumulated 288 yards of total offense during the night and scored a pair of long touchdowns while quarterback Alex Manske threw for 235 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.

LAKE MILLS—Lake Mills picked up a key early season Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match win on Thursday, Sept. 1 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears in three straight sets.

Wolverines go 1-2 at Okoboji Tournament

MILFORD—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines volleyball squad went 1-2 on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the Okoboji volleyball tourney.

The purple-and-gold defeated the host school by the score of 21-13 and 21-17 in their opening match. Kierstin Montag went 15 of 15 serving with three aces, had five kills, came up with 11 digs and had one solo block as Addie Montag added five kills and Chloe Massner contributed six set assists.

North Union Warriors fall to Forest City in conference play

ARMSTRONG—Falling for the first time in 2022, the North Union Warriors volleyball squad dropped a Top of Iowa Conference match in four sets on Thursday, Sept.1 to the Forest City Indians.

Forest City, ranked 15th in Class 3A,  won the opening game by the score of 15-25 but the home team responded by taking the second set by the score of 25-16 to even the match at one apiece.

West Bend-Mallard clobbers Gaels 66-22

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard scored early and often in their eight-man district opener as the purple-and-gold clubbed the St. Edmond Gaels 66-22 on Friday, Sept. 2.

The Wolverines built a huge 52-6 advantage at intermission and cruised to the district victory as the entire squad got a chance to have some playing time in the contest.

North Union Warriors defeat North Butler 35-6

ALLISON—North Union built a 28-6 halftime advantage and went onto a 35-6 Class A district opening victory over Friday, Sept. 2 over the North Butler Bearcats.

The contest was deadlocked at 6-6 after the first 12 minutes of action before the green-black-and-silver took control of the game in the second period with 22 unanswered points.

The Warriors received the opening kickoff and drove 63 yards in eight plays as Bryer Prochniak went the final two yards for the touchdown.

Golden Bears top North Iowa 32-14

 

BUFFALO CENTER—Bishop Garrigan improved to 2-0 on the season on Friday, Sept. 2 as the black-and-gold topped the North Iowa Bison by the score of 32-14 in eight-man district opener for both teams.

The Golden Bears’ defense was outstanding in the second half, blanking the blue-and-white to earn the victory as they put the game away with 12 points in the final 12 minutes.

Two BGHS runners narrowly miss top 10

MASON CITY—A pair of Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears cross-country runners narrowly missed a top 10 finish to highlight the performances of the black-and-gold at the Newman Invitational held on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Gavin Swift placed 11th for the Golden Bear boys in 19:17.87 as Daniel Meis was 53rd with a time of 22:22.05 just ahead of teammate Ethan Kuper in 54th place in 22:23.52.

Morphew paces NU boys at Okoboji

MILFORD—A pair of area boys’ cross-country teams competed at but did not have enough runners for a team score on Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Okoboji Invitational.

Both North Union and West Bend-Mallard did not have enough runners to compile a team score on Thursday as the Warriors had four varsity runners and the Wolverines three.

Gavyn Morphew was the top area place winner at Okoboji Invitational as he took 25th place for the green-black-and-silver in 19:40.40.
