No. 14 Lake Mills too much for Warriors

ARMSTRONG—Lake Mills remained undefeated in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball matches on Tuesday, Sept. 20 as the No. 14 (Class 2A) Bulldogs defeated the North Union Warriors in three straight games.

The purple-and-gold won the first two games by the identical scores of 25-17 and ended the match by winning the third set by the score of 25-15 to improve to 19-2 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the league.

Golden Bears sweep league road contest

BUFFALO CENTER—Bishop Garrigan went on the road in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 and came home with a victory in three straight sets.

The black-and-gold took the opening game by the score of 25-21 before winning the second set by the count of 25-14. The Golden Bears used a late rally in the third game to end the match with a 26-24 win in the set.

No. 9 Mustangs defeat West Bend-Mallard

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard dropped a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 22 in three straight sets to No. 9 ranked (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda.

The Mustangs won the first games by the identical scores of 25-19 and ended the match with a 25-11 victory in game number three.

Algona earns NCC road league victory

IOWA FALLS—Algona went on the road on Thursday, Sept. 22 in North Central Conference volleyball action and came back to town with a league victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in three straight games.

The red-and-black improved to 4-1 in conference matches and is now 12-5 in games played in those matches while the Cadets dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Nighthawks hand Algona first loss of season

ALGONA—Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley took advantages of some Algona mistakes to lead to 13 big points in a 19-7 non-district football win over the red-and-black on Friday, Sept. 16 in a contest played at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs threw a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble that set up two short fields for Nighthawks to score 13 points and were also hurt by committing eight key penalties for 49 yards.

Lynx deal Algona first NCC volleyball loss

WEBSTER CITY—Algona tasted defeat in North Central Conference volleyball play for the first time in 2022 on Thursday, Sept. 15 as the Webster City Lynx topped the red-and-black in three straight sets.

Algona fell to 6-6 overall on the season and 17-17 in overall games played and is now 3-1 in conference matches and 9-5 in league games while Webster City improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Golden Bears outlast North Union in five sets

ALGONA—For the second straight year it took the full five sets to determine a winner in the Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match between the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears and the North Union Warriors.

Wolverines cruise to 57-6 homecoming win

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard built a commanding 42-0 halftime advantage and cruised to a 57-6 homecoming victory on Friday, Sept. 15 over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings.

The purple-and-gold scored three times in both the first and second period and added two more touchdowns in the third stanza in the rout to lead 57-0 at the end of three quarters of play.

Warriors post 44-20 homecoming win

ARMSTRONG—Rebounding from their first loss of the season, the North Union Warriors rolled past the Lake Mills Bulldogs 44-20 in their homecoming contest  played on Friday, Sept. 16.

Senior Bryer Prochniak scored three times and went over the 100-yard mark rushing while teammate Carter Morphew also rushed for over a 100 yards and passed for 146 more.

No. 5 Mustangs shutout Bishop Garrigan 19-0

NEWELL—Bishop Garrigan slowed down a high-powered Newell-Fonda offense but the Mustang defense shut down the black-and-gold’s offense in a 19-0 non-district eight-man football win on Friday, Sept. 17 for the home team.

The blue-and-white’s defense limited the Golden Bears to just 172 yards of total offense on the evening but the visitors held a potent Mustang offense to 219 yards on the night to keep the contest close till the end.

Algona moves to 3-0 in NCC matches

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs volleyball squad remained unbeaten in North Central Conference matches on Tuesday, Sept. 13 with a league victory over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs in three straight sets.

The home team easily won the opening game by the score of 25-9 before taking the second set by the count of 25-14. Algona ended the match with a hard-fought 25-21 win in game number three.

Wolverines drop pair of league matches

EMMETSBURG—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines volleyball squad dropped a pair of Twin Lakes Conference matches on Thursday, Sept. 15.

The purple-and-gold fell to No. 15 (Class 2A) South Central Calhoun by the score of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20 and fell to the Emmetsburg E-Hawks 25-15, 25-11 and 26-24.

In the first match of the evening against the Titans, the Wolverines were successful on 42 of 49 serves as a team for 85.7 percent with one ace.

Schupbach takes sixth at Chris Smith Invitational

SIOUX RAPIDS—Tyra Schupbach placed sixth overall to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine cross-country squads at the Chris Smith Invitational ran at the Little Sioux Golf & Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Schupbach crossed the finish line with a clocking of 21:00.56 while teammate Lilly Morey ended up in 29th place in 23:36.00 and Lexi Welter placed 45th with her time of 25:19.77.

AHS Bulldogs cross-country girls compete at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE—The Algona Bulldog girls’ cross-country squad ran on the Sunrise Pointe Golf Course in the Storm Lake Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and the red-and-black placed 10th in the team standings with team total of 329 points.

Tyra Schupbach places 3rd at Humboldt

HUMBOLDT—Tyra Schupbach of West Bend-Mallard came across the finish line in third place overall to highlight the performances of the four area girls’ cross-country squads on Monday, Sept. 19 at the Humboldt Invitational held at the Joe Shelton Park.

Schupbach was clocked in a time of 21:29.42 for the purple-and-gold as Wolverine teammate Lexi Welter was 28th in 24:59.50 and Lilly Morey ended up in 47th place overall with her clocking of 26:24.44.

Algona boys, Stundahl win Humboldt titles

HUMBOLDT—Algona won the team title and Ryan Stundahl was the individual champion to highlight the performances of the four area boys’ cross-country teams at the Humboldt Invitational ran at Joe Shelton Park on Monday, Sept. 19.

Algona topped the 15-team field with a team total of 44 points as North Union was 10th with 258 points right ahead of Bishop Garrigan’s 265 and West Bend-Mallard had just two runners and no team score.
