North Union earns league road victory

EAGLE GROVE—The North Union Warriors volleyball squad went on the road in Top of Iowa Conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and came home with a victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles in four sets.

The green-black-and-silver won the opening game by the score of 25-8 before the home team fought back to take the second set by the score of 26-24. The Warriors then won the next game 25-16 and ended the match with a 25-9 win in set number four.

Tornado Alley Run attracts a total of 76 runners

ALGONA—The 40th annual Tornado Alley Run took place on Saturday, Oct. 1 as a grand total of 74 runners competed in the event.

The male 5K race had a total of 21 runners compete as Joesph Ricklefs was the overall winner with a clocking of 19:36 as Ryley Riggert was the runner-up in 19:40.

Ulfers is having an outstanding senior season as he leads the Bulldogs in rushing after six games with 316 yards in 76 carries and has scored six touchdowns along with nine pass receptions for 139 yards. On defense, Lamorn has registered 60 total tackles, including 27 solo stops and four tackles for loss.

Schupbach top area girls’ finisher at Algona Invite

ALGONA—West Bend-Mallard freshmen Tyra Schupbach placed seventh to highlight the performances of the four area girls’ cross-country squads on Monday, Sept. 26 at the annual Algona Invitational held at the River Road Golf Course.

Schupbach crossed the finish line with a clocking of 20:27 while teammate Lilly Morey was 36th in 22:34 and Lexi Welter took 61st place with her time of 24:07.

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog boys’ cross-country team finished as runner-up in the annual Algona Invitational meet held at the River Road Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 26 to highlight the performances of the four area squads.

Hemphill spoils Golden Bears’ homecoming

ALGONA—Caleb Hemphill scored five touchdowns to help lead the Harris-Lake Park Wolves to a 38-14 victory on Friday, Sept. 23 over Bishop Garrigan to spoil the Golden Bears’ homecoming festivities.

The senior caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Lucas Ahrenstorff, returned a kickoff and ran back an interception in the eight-man, district number two contest.

Warriors fall to top-ranked West Hancock

BRITT—North Union scored with a nice drive to start the game but it was all top-ranked West Hancock after that in a 60-27 Class A district victory over the green-black-and-silver on Friday, Sept. 23.

The Eagles led 22-7 after the first 12 minutes of action and took a commanding 46-21 advantage to the locker room at intermission.

No. 9 Titans top West Bend-Mallard 38-24

RUTHVEN—West Bend-Mallard gave ninth-ranked Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire their toughest battle of the season before bowing to the Titans on Friday, Sept. 24 by the final score of 38-24.

The Wolverines led 16-14 at the conclusion of the first quarter as the home team took a 22-16 advantage to the locker room at halftime and led 30-16 heading into the final 12 minutes of action.

Algona falls to No. 5 Comets in district opener

POLK CITY—Fifth-ranked North Polk showed why they are the Class 3A District No. 2 favorites with a 55-28 victory over the Algona Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 24 in the district opener for both teams.

The Comets took advantage of a couple of short fields in the opening period to take a 14-0 lead and extended their advantage to 27-6 at intermission.

Swim falls to Spencer 139-39

ESTHERVILLE—The Algona swim team dropped a 139-39 decision to the Spencer Tigers in a meet held at the Estherville Wellness Center.

The highlight of the meet for the red-and-black was in the diving event where freshman Reese Taylor set a new school record with her winning total of 195.40 and the Bulldogs also took second place in all three relays.

Golden Bears win BGHS Tournament

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan won all six matches to place first in the annual BGHS volleyball tournament held on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Saint Ansgar went 5-1 on the day with North Iowa going 4-2. Southeast Valley, Belmond-Klemme and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura all were 2-4 with West Hancock going winless in six matches.

The black-and-gold opened the day with a 21-13, 21-12 victory over West Hancock before defeating Garner-Hayfield/Ventura by the score of 21-3 and 21-12.

Strong serving leads Warriors to pair of wins

WEST BEND—A strong evening of serving propelled the North Union Warriors volleyball squad to a pair of non-conference victories on Monday, Sept. 26 as three area teams tangled.

In the first match of the night, the Warriors outlasted the home school by the score of 25-20, 23-25 and 15-13. The green-black-and-silver missed only one serve in that contest as they went 62 of 63 for 98.4 percent with five service aces.

Wolverines topple G-T/R-A in four sets

 

GRAETTINGER—West Bend-Mallard edged closer to the .500 mark on the season in overall matches with a four-set Twin Lakes Conference volleyball victory on Tuesday, Sept. 20 over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

The Titans took the opening game by the score of 21-25 before the visitors battled back to take the second set 25-13. The Wolverines then won the final two games by identical scores of 25-18.

Algona bulldogs split pair of non-conference matches

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball squad split a pair of non-conference matches at home on Tuesday, Sept. 21 against Pocahontas Area and Clarion-Goldfield.

The red-and-black opened the night with a 25-19 and 25-16 victory over Pocahontas Area. The Bulldogs were successful on 44 of 49 serves as a team in that win for 89.8 percent with eight aces.

Algona Swim team competes at Perry

PERRY—The Algona swim team competed at Perry in a meet against the Bluejays and the Fort Dodge Dodgers on Thursday, Sept. 22 as the Dodgers placed first with 86 points followed by Perry with 78 and Algona was third with 47 points.

Brooke Ludwig was the top individual place winner for the red-and-black as she took second in the 100-yard freestyle event as did the Bulldogs’ 200-yard medley relay squad while a pair of relays finished third.

Bulldogs go 1-3 at Boone Tourney

BOONE—The Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball squad went 1-3 at the Boone Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24 against some tough competition. The red-and-black’s lone win of the day was a 21-10, 20-22 and 15-10 victory over the Ames Cyclones.

The Bulldogs fell to Forest City by the score of 23-21 and 21-19; lost to Knoxville by the count of 21-12 and 12-15 and were defeated by No. 9 (Class 4A) Waverly-Shell Rock 21-13 and 21-16.
