Crooks snares 1,000 career rebound in win

LAKE MILLS—Senior Audi Crooks yanked down the 1,000th rebound of her great high school career to help lead No. 1 ranked Bishop Garrigan to a 73-39 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

Lake Mills played well in opening eight minutes and trailed just 19-16 at the quarter break. The black-and-gold used a big second frame to take control of the game and led 44-24 at halftime and also led 65-30 heading into the fourth period.

Bulldog girls pick up NCC road victory

WEBSTER CITY—The Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad made the most of a long road trip to Webster City on Friday, Dec. 9 by defeating the Lynx by the score of 61-39 in North Central Conference action.

The visitors raced out to an 18-8 lead at the conclusion of the first stanza and extended their advantage to 35-18 at intermission. The red-and-black led 44-26 heading into the final period of action.

Garrett Fehr placed fifth at 152 pounds for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines’ wrestling team at the Bob Roethler Invitational on Saturday in Emmetsburg.

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team picked up a pair of North Central Conference victories on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Dane Kitzinger went 2-0 on the night with a pair of pins while teammates Colby Jennings, Cohen Reffer, Jacob Zabka and Barrett Morgan all went 2-0 with one fall as Tate Slagle, Thomas Zabka and Isaac Wilson each went 2-0.

Three WB-M Wolverines place at Roethler Invitational

EMMETSBURG—Three West Bend-Mallard Wolverine wrestlers placed in the top six at the Bob Roethler Invitational held on Saturday, Dec. 10. The purple-and-gold placed 11th in the team standings with 46 team points.

Mason Knapp was the top place winner for the Wolverines by taking fourth at 106 pounds with a 2-2 record with a pair of falls during the day.

Golden Bears hold off late Eagle Grove rally for win

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan fought off a late Eagle Grove rally to hand the Eagles a 64-61 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball loss on Friday, Dec. 9.

The home team held a narrow 11-10 advantage at the end of the first period and led 29-24 at halftime. The black-and-gold led 48-41 heading into the final stanza before the visitors made things interesting with a late rally.

Balanced scoring leads Golden Bears to win

BELMOND—A balanced scoring attack led the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team to an 81-39 Top of Iowa Conference road victory on Monday, Dec. 12 over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The visitors built an 1812 advantage at the end of the first quarter and took a 39-23 lead to the locker room at halftime. The black-and-gold also led 61-30 heading into the fourth period of action.

North Union warriors cruise past Vikings 74-39

BELMOND—North Union earned a non-conference home victory on Monday, Dec. 12 boys’ basketball play with a solid 74-39 win over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings.

The green-black-and-silver had a strong first period as they grabbed a 23-9 lead at the end of the frame. The Warriors increased the advantage to 42-11 at intermission and also led 64-21 going into the final eight minutes.

No. 1 Golden Bears crush Eagle Grove 86-22

ALGONA—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan flexed their muscles in a convincing 86-22 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles on Friday, Dec. 9.

The black-and-gold took control of the contest immediately off the opening tip and led 32-6 at the end of the first period. The home team built the advantage to 59-13 at halftime and led 78-15 after three quarters of basketball.

North Union takes non-conference victory

ARMSTRONG—North Union earned a hard-fought 45-25 non-conference girls’ basketball victory on Monday, Dec. 12 over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings.

The contest was tight after the first eight minutes of play as green-black-and-silver held a narrow 10-8 lead. The Warriors took an 18-11 advantage to the locker room at halftime and enjoyed a 29-18 lead going into the fourth quarter of action.

Crooks scores 2,000 career point

BELMOND—It has been another memorable week in the great basketball career of Bishop Garrigan senior Audi Crooks. In the first period of Monday night’s game, Crooks tossed in the 2,000th point of her career after grabbing her 1,000th rebound on Tuesday against Lake Mills.

Crooks’ 2,000 point was one of her game-high 24 points that help led the top-ranked black-and-gold to a 72-17 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

North Union Warriors topple WB-M wrestlers

POCAHONTAS—A pair of area wrestling teams met on Tuesday, Dec. 6 as the North Union Warriors defeated the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines by the score of 60-21.

The Warriors also topped Sioux Central by the score of 60-24 but fell to Pocahontas Area 52-24. West Bend-Mallard lost to Pocahontas Area 60-18 and was edged by Sioux Central by the count of 33-30.

Bulldog girls make history with pair of dual wins

ALGONA—For the first time in the school’s history, the Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestling squad competed in a dual meet and made a statement with a pair of victories on Tuesday, Dec. 6 by topping Iowa Falls-Alden 60-12 and Clear Lake 63-18.

Ryan Haynes, Regan Nicholson and Abbe Gorham each went 2-0 with a pair of fall for the red-and-black. Going 2-0 with one fall was both Jenna Stohr and Savannah Steven while teammates Gretchen Gorham, Harley Tobin and Eliza Schultz all went 2-0.

Algona wins Odgen Duals for second straight year

OGDEN—For the second straight season, the Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team went 5-0 to place first at the Ogden Dual Tournament held on Saturday, Dec. 10.

The Bulldogs earned wins over East Sac County 78-0, Carroll-Kuemper 58-15, Greene County 63-18 and Woodward-Granger 69-7 in pool play before topping Carroll 49-24 in the finals.

Quiz bowl qualifiers out of 24 teams

ALGONA—Algona High School hosted and competed in a quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, November 12. This tournament was a national qualifier, which means the top ten percent of teams who placed get to compete at the national level in Atlanta, Ga., this spring. There were a total of 24 teams competing from 12 different schools.

AHS boys’ wrestlers compete at Cliff Keen Invitational

INDEPENDENCE—A total of 15 Algona High School boys’ wrestlers competed at the 31-team Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 2-3 and placed 17th as a squad with a team score of 157.5 points.

Algona has three wrestlers ranked in first Class 2A rankings and that trio of grapplers was the top finishers for the red-and-black at Independence.

Charles City edges Bulldog boys 78-75

CHARLES CITY—In a very entertaining boys’ basketball game played on Saturday, Dec. 3, the Charles City Comets nipped the Algona Bulldogs by the final score of 78-75 in non-conference action.

Charles City led by as much as 16 points during the contest but the red-and-black stayed in the game and had a chance to send the battle into overtime on their final possession.
