AHS girls improve to 8-1 in NCC play

ALGONA—Algona improved to 11-5 overall and 8-1 in Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball play with a 64-35 league victory on Monday, Jan. 23 over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

The home team led 13-8 at the conclusion of the first period as they extended that advantage to 26-16 at intermission and also led 44-31 going into the fourth quarter of play.

Golden Bear girls defeat Lake Mills 78-29

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan stayed undefeated in Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball play on Tuesday, Jan. 17 with a 78-29 triumph over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The black-and-gold started out cold and led just 14-5 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The home team increased their advantage to 38-13 at halftime and enjoyed a 57-23 lead going into the game’s final eight minutes of play.

Stalzer spurs WB-M girls to victory

WEST BEND—Sophomore guard Hailey Stalzer poured in a game-high 31 points, including a 10-0 run to end the contest, to help the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad rally for a 59-54 Twin Lakes Conference win on Tuesday, Jan. 17 over East Sac County.

Lake Mills stays perfect with 74-47 win over BGHS

ALGONA—Lake Mills improved to 13-0 overall and 11-0 in the conference with a 74-47 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The contest was dead-locked at 14-14 after the first eight minutes of play before the visitors took a 34-22 lead to the locker room at halftime. The purple-and-gold also held a 53-40 advantage after three quarters of action.

Golden Bears hand Eagle Grove 75-49 league loss

 

EAGLE GROVE—Bishop Garrigan went on the road on Friday, Jan. 20 in Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball play and returned home with a 75-49 victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

Three black-and-gold players reached double figures in the scoring department led by Ryan Noonan with 16 points Aiden Hovey added 12 points and Jack Grandgenett scored 11 more.

Bulldogs roll past Poky 72-45

 

ALGONA—Algona took a lead early and never looked back in a 72-45 non-conference boys’ basketball victory on Saturday, Jan. 21 over the Pocahontas Area Indians.

The home team jumped out to a 21-13 lead after the first eight minutes of basketball. The Bulldogs increased the lead to 38-24 at intermission and held a 52-37 advantage after the third period of play.

10th victory of the season for North Union boys

 

EAGLE GROVE—Earning their 10th win of 2022-2023 season, the North Union Warrior boys’ basketball team picked up a 68-45 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles on Monday, Jan. 23.

The green-black-and-silver led 18-8 at the conclusion of the first period before taking a 32-18 advantage to the locker room at intermission and led 51-31 at the end of the third quarter.

50 Straight Conference Wins For Bishop Garrigan

 

EAGLE GROVE—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan’s Top of Iowa Conference winning streak reached 50 consecutive games on Friday, Jan. 20 with an 80-34 victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The black-and-gold improved to 14-1 overall and are now 11-0 in league contests as they continued to roll forward to yet another conference title.

Warrior girls move to 10-1 in conference

 

EAGLE GROVE—North Union improved to 13-2 overall and 10-1 in Top of Iowa Conference play after a 62-28 league victory on Monday, Jan. 23 over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The 10th ranked green-black-and-silver jumped out to 14-9 lead after the first stanza and increased that advantage to 38-20 at intermission. The Warriors also led 56-24 moving in the final eight minutes of action.

AHS girls survive cold shooting night in win

 

HAMPTON—Despite a cold shooting evening from the floor, the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad found a way to win in a low scoring 34-28 North Central Conference win over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Algona led 10-7 at the end of the first stanza before the home team rallied to lead 16-13 at intermission. The visitors battled back to take a 22-18 advantage into the final eight minutes of action.

North Union girls improve to 11-2 overall

 

FOREST CITY—North Union built an early lead and slowly pulled away in a 62-48 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball contest victory over the Forest City Indians.

The 11th ranked (Class 2A) Warriors held a narrow 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 22-15 at halftime. The green-black-and-silver enjoyed a 40-29 advantage moving into the fourth period of action.

Wolverines rally for Twin Lakes league win

 

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard outpointed East Sac County 33-17 in the second half to rally for a 56-48 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory over the Raiders on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The purple-and-gold led 12-11 at the conclusion of the opening frame before the visitors rallied to take a 31-23 advantage at intermission. The Wolverines battled back to regain the lead at 40-39 at the end of three quarters of play.

Big second half leads Warriors past Forest City

 

FOREST CITY—North Union outscored Forest City 43-25 in the second half to rally from a halftime deficit and went onto a 69-53 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball win on Tuesday, Jan, 17 over the Indians.

Forest City led by one point 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and held a two-point lead 28-26 at intermission. The green-black-and-silver out-pointed the home team 20-14 in the third stanza to lead 46-42 going into the fourth quarter.

Algona boys win third straight NCC contest

 

HAMPTON—Going on the road in North Central Conference boys’ basketball play on Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Algona Bulldogs won their third consecutive league contest by the score of 68-50 over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.

The visitors took a 21-17 lead after the first quarter before taking a 35-31 to the locker room at halftime and enjoyed a 50-41 advantage heading into the fourth period of action.

Knapp wins conference title for Wolverines

EMMETSBURG—Freshman Mason Knapp won the title at 106 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling team at the Twin Lakes Conference tournament held on Saturday, Jan. 14.

11th straight win for Bishop Garrigan girls

ALGONA—After dropping their 2022-2023 season opener to a nationally-ranked team, the No. 1 squad in Class 1A, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball squad has rattled off 11 consecutive victories.

The last triumph came on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at home as the black-and-gold earned their 48th straight Top of Iowa Conference win with an 85-38 victory over Belmond-Klemme.
