Golden Bears advance to quarterfinal round

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan jumped out to an early 21-0 advantage and never looked back in a 47-12, eight-man playoff victory at Conway Field over the Riceville Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 1.

The second-ranked and defending state champions scored once in the opening frame and added two early scores in the second period to lead 21-0 with 9:37 left in the second quarter.

Fast start leads Bulldogs past Harlan 49-6

ALGONA—Fourth-ranked Algona came out ready to play in the opening round of the Class 3A football playoffs by scoring 35 points in the first 13 minutes of the game to get the continuous clock in effect, and cruised to a 49-6 win over the Harlan Cyclones on Friday, Nov. 1.

Schupbach 11th, Swift 16th at 1A state meet

FORT DODGE—A pair of area girls finished in the top 16 runners out of the 100 competitors at the Class 1A girls state cross-country meet held at the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge on Saturday, Nov. 2.

West Bend-Mallard’s junior Tyra Schupbach came across the stripe in 11th place overall while freshman Julia Swift of Bishop Garrigan was 16th.

Weber ends up 40th in 3A XC state meet

FORT DODGE—Algona junior, Gavin Weber, came across the finish line in 40th place overall on Friday, Nov. 1 at the Class 3A state cross-country meet held at the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge.

“I got out really hard at the start as I just tried to stay up toward the front for as long as I could to get positioning,” said Weber of his race. “I kind of faded a little bit after the first mile, but I tried to stay strong throughout the race.

Swim team splits season finale at Carroll

CARROLL—The Algona swim team concluded the 2024 regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Carroll against the Tigers and Perry Bluejays.

Perry won the meet with a final team score of 66 points as Algona finished in second place with a score of 48 and Carroll ended up in third place 27 points.

TerHark named to IGCA Hall of Fame

DES MOINES—The Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) announced that former Algona High School volleyball coach, Shelly TerHark, will be inducted into the IGCA Volleyball Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame on Nov. 16 at Johnston during the 2024 Senior All-Star weekend.

TerHark coached for 33 years at two schools, Algona and Clarion-Goldfield. During her career, Shelly compiled a career record of 874-319.

Nine area players named academic all-state

DES MOINES—The Algona area was well represented by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association as a total of nine area volleyball players were named members of the 2024 Academic All-State team.

Area players named were Paige Schmitt, Lainey Ventiecher and Casey VanOtterloo of Algona; Alaina Bormann and Molly Peterson of Bishop Garrigan; Ava Steinberger of North Union along with Hailey Stalzer, Claire Gerber and Tiffany Fehr of West Bend-Mallard.

WB-M spikers advance with win over Golden Bears

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard advanced to the Class 1A regional volleyball tournament semi-finals after a victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears in a contest played on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Murphy scores three times in 62-15 rout for Golden Bears

ALGONA—Senior Owen Murphy scored three touchdowns and had another 79-yard kickoff return called back due to a penalty to help lead No. 2 ranked Bishop Garrigan to a 62-15 romp over the Tripoli Panthers on Friday, Oct. 25 in the opening round of the eight-man playoffs.

Weichert’s 3 touchdowns lead the Bulldogs to a 31-6 victory

HAMPTON—Junior running back Will Weichert scored three touchdowns to help No. 4 ranked Algona to a 31-6 district football win over Hampton in the “Battle of the Bulldogs” on Friday, Oct. 25.

Holding a 14-6 advantage at intermission, Algona held the home team scoreless in the second half as they wrapped up the runner-up slot in the district behind champion Humboldt.

Schupbach qualifies for state for third straight year

HOLSTEIN—For the third straight season, West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach will be running at the Class 1A state cross-country meet in Fort Dodge.

The purple-and-gold junior qualified for the state meet for the third consecutive year by placing seventh overall in 21:00.47 at the Class 1A regional meet held on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Julia Swift headed to state cross-country meet

MANLY—Bishop Garrigan freshman Julia Swift qualified for the Class 1A state cross-country meet to highlight the performances of a pair of area girls’ cross-country squads at the regional meet held in Manly on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The black-and-gold youngster crossed the finish line in fourth place overall in a season-best clocking of 19:35.1, a new school record, to qualify for this week’s state meet.

Gavin Weber qualifies for Class 3A state XCC meet

GILBERT—Algona junior Gavin Weber qualified for the Class 3A state cross-country meet after his sixth place showing at the district meet held on Wednesday, Oct. 24 to highlight the performances of the red-and-black squad.

Weber crossed the finish line behind five Gilbert runners to take sixth place overall in a season-best clocking of 16:04.20 to make the state meet for the first time in his high school career.

Swim team hosts Decorah in final home meet

ALGONA—The Algona swim team hosted their third and final home meet of the season on Thursday, Oct. 25 by entertaining the Decorah Vikings as the visitors prevailed by the final score of 106-70.

The red-and-black won four individual events during the evening, including a new school record from Ella Welp in the 100-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 1:09.38. The old record was a time of 1:11.25 by Jessica Anderson in 2016.
