Wolverine boys drop conference matchup to Estherville E-Hawks

WEST BEND—Emmetsburg built a big lead early and never looked back in a 75-35 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball victory on Friday, Jan. 31 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The E-Hawks started fast by taking a 24-12 lead at the conclusion of the first period and extended their advantage to 47-18 at halftime. The visitors took a commanding 61-25 into the fourth quarter of play.

Mason City holds off late Bulldog rally 65-62

ALGONA—Mason City built a double digit lead and then had to hold off a great late run by the Algona Bulldog boys basketball team as they held on for a 65-62 non-conference victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 1.

WB-M wrestlers hosted home meet on Tuesday

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard played host to three other Twin Lakes Conference squads on Tuesday, Jan, 28 in league quadrangular meet. The host school dropped all three matches during the evening.

The purple-and-gold fell to East Sac County 36-24 before losing to South Central Calhoun 59-15 and was defeated by Sioux Central by the final score of 53-11.

BG girls improve to 16-2 on the year

ALGONA—Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan improved their overall season record to 16-2 on the year after a 70-34 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 28 over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Graclyn Eastman poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the black-and-gold in scoring as Sacha Alesch added 17 and Emmi Bartolo had 10 points reaching double digits.

Jones leads North Union boys past Broncos

ARMSTRONG—A good all-around floor game by senior point guard Khael Jones propelled the North Union Warrior boys basketball team to a 59-52 Top of Iowa Conference win on Tuesday, Jan. 28 over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

Jones poured in a game-high 22 points, yanked down six rebounds, handed out six assists and pocketed seven steals as the green-black-and-silver won for the sixth time since the calendar turned to 2025 after just one in 2024.

WB-M girls knock down 12 triples in win over H-LP

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard splashed 12 three-pointers in a 71-48 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves on Monday, Feb. 3.

The win improved the purple-and-gold’s overall record to 14-5 and are currently 5-4 in Twin Lakes Conference games as Harris-Lake Park fell to 15-4 overall.

Cardiac Bulldogs win sixth straight game by single digits

MASON CITY—One could say the 2024-2025 edition, eighth-ranked Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad like to keep their fans interested until the final buzzer.

For the sixth straight game, the cardiac red-and-black team won by single digits as their latest victory was on Monday, Feb. 3 with a thrilling 46-45 non-conference triumph over the Mason City Riverhawks.

WB-M girls hold off Gaels for 12th victory

FORT DODGE—West Bend-Mallard let a big first half lead get away, but held off a late rally to defeat the St. Edmond Gaels 54-50 on Thursday, Jan. 30 in a non-conference girls basketball contest to earn their 12th victory of the season.

The purple-and-gold jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, led 31-23 at the halftime break and took a 41-29 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Helmers pours in 40 in win over Cowboys

CLARION—Senior Ben Helmers continued his recent torrid scoring streak by tossing in 40 more points to help the Algona Bulldogs rally to a 70-53 North Central Conference boys basketball win on Monday, Feb. 3 over the Clarion-Goldfield/Cowboys.

Helmers has poured in 214 points in his last six games for a scoring average of 35.6 points per contest. The Bulldogs trailed 53-49 going into the fourth quarter where they blanked the Cowboys 21-0 in the period to earn the win.

Wolverines rally for non-conference victory

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard outscored Harris-Lake Park 18-10 in the final eight minutes to rally for a 58-54 non-conference boys basketball win over Harris-Lake Park on Monday, Feb. 3 to end an 11-game losing streak.

Golden Bear boys fly past Cardinals 65-42

ALGONA—Led by three players in double figures, No. 10 ranked Bishop Garrigan rolled to a 65-42 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 28 over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Amaury Thomas and Carter Schwab both tossed in 16 points with Michael Joyce adding 10 more and Drew Muller narrowly missed double digits with nine points.

Late charity tosses leads Warrior girls to league win

ARMSTRONG—Maisey Bierstedt drained a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to give the North Union Warrior girls basketball team an exciting 42-40 Top of Iowa Conference win over Belmond-Klemme on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Bierstedt also led the winners in scoring with 20 points and was joined in double figures by Ainsley Ulrich with 10 points. Alexis Cummins tallied six points as Shallie Walders tossed in four and Ava Steinberger rounded out the scoring with two points.

St. Edmond cruises past WB-M boys

FORT DODGE—St. Edmond built a big first period lead and never looked back in a 60-32 non-conference boys basketball victory on Thursday, Jan. 30 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The eighth-rated green-and-white squad raced out to a commanding 27-10 lead at the end of the first stanza, increased their advantage to 55-17 at intermission and led 73-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lynx shock Algona boys 56-54

ALGONA—Trailing by five points coming into the final eight minutes, the Webster City Lynx boys basketball team out-scored the Algona Bulldogs 17-10 in the final frame to stun the home team with a come-from-behind 56-54 North Central Conference win on Friday, Jan. 31.

Big second half leads Gaels past Algona

FORT DODGE—Eighth-ranked St. Edmond outscored Algona 51-30 in the second half to post an 82-61 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over the red-and-black on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Ben Helmers poured in a team-leading 28 points in the loss and was joined in double figures by Nathan Manske with 14, as Evan Allie just missed double digits with nine points.

South Central Calhoun too much for WB-M boys

ROCKWELL CITY—A big second quarter gave South Central Calhoun a 15-point halftime advantage and the Titans never let up in a 78-45 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

Three Wolverines reached double figures in the loss as Kacen Flynn led the way with 13 points while both Abner Zaugg and Carson Schneider tallied 11 points each.
