Forest City defeats Golden Bears in three straight sets

ALGONA—Forest City remained in second place in the Top of Iowa Conference volleyball standings on Tuesday, Oct. 1 with a league victory in three straight games over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The Indians took the opening set by the score of 21-12 before winning the second game 21-15 and ended the match with a 21-12 victory in the third game.

Alta-Aurelia rallies past Wolverines in five sets

WEST BEND—Alta-Aurelia rallied by winning the final three sets to defeat the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in five games in a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball match played on Thursday, Oct. 3.

The purple-and-gold fell to 13-5 in overall matches with the loss and are 35-22 in games played this season. The Wolverines are 4-4 in Twin Lakes Conference matches and 17-17 in conference games while the Warriors improved to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Eagle Grove tops Warriors in five sets

EAGLE GROVE—North Union went on the road in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball play on Tuesday, Oct. 1, traveling to Eagle Grove as the Eagles picked up the league victory in five sets.

The home team won the first two games by the scores of 25-21 and 25-12 before the green-black-and-silver came back to take the next two games by the scores of 25-13 and 25-12. The purple-and-white then won the final set by the count of 15-10.

Schmidt helps WB-M spoil H-LP’s homecoming

LAKE PARK—Senior Austin Schmidt had a huge night to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine football team to a 51-12 eight-man victory on Friday, Sept. 27 over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves to spoil the their homecoming festivities.

Schupbach wins Algona Invitational

ALGONA—West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach cruised to the individual title to highlight the performances of four area girls cross-country squads at the River Road Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 30 at the annual Algona Invitational.

Schupbach led the whole way to top the 99 young ladies running the course as she stopped the watches at 19:31.30, 28 seconds ahead of the runner-up from Clear Lake.

Manske tosses school record five TD passes in AHS win

CHARLES CITY—Senior quarterback Alex Manske tossed a school record five touchdown passes, all in the first half, to lead No. 1 ranked Algona to a 53-25 Class 3A district opening win over Charles City on Friday, Sept. 27.

The future Iowa State Cyclone completed eight of nine passes on the evening for 210 yards and the five scores to lead his team to the victory. The red-and-black exploded for 40 points in the second quarter for the second time this season.

Weber is top area boys place winner at AHS Invitational

ALGONA—Gavin Weber of Algona placed sixth overall in a loaded field of 110 runners to highlight the performances of the four area boys cross-country teams on Monday, Sept. 30 at the Algona Invitational held at the River Road Golf Club.

Wolverines improve to 11-3 on the year

GRAETTINGER—West Bend-Mallard improved to 11-3 overall on the year in matches on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball win over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans in three straight sets.

The purple-and-gold took the opening game by the score of 25-11 before winning game number two 25-9 and ended the match with a 25-11 victory in the third set.

20-point third quarter dooms Warriors

LAKE MILLS—Lake Mills exploded for 20 third quarter points to break a 7-7 halftime dead-lock and went onto a 34-14 district football victory over the North Union Warriors on Friday, Sept. 27.

The visitors took the opening kickoff and marched 66 yards in six plays to take an early lead on a 35-yard touchdown run by Greyson Colegrove.

Algona earns NCC road victory

IOWA FALLS—The Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball squad went on the road on Thursday, Sept. 26 in North Central Conference action and defeated the Iowa Falls-Cadets in three straight sets.

The red-and-black won the opening set 25-23 before winning a marathon 33-31 contest in game number two. The Bulldogs ended the match with a 25-14 victory in the third set.

North Union host Golden Bears and Wolverines

ARMSTRONG—North Union entertained both Bishop Garrigan and West Bend-Mallard on Monday, Sept. 30 in a non-conference volleyball triangular matchup.

The night started with the host school taking on Bishop Garrigan as the black-and-gold prevailed by the scores of 21-14 and 21-11.

Swim team hosts Spencer at Algona

ALGONA—The Algona swim team hosted the Spencer Tigers in their second home meet of the 2024 season on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Algona Family YMCA, falling by the final score of 117-61.

The red-and-black won three events as Brooke Ludwig took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:20.64, Ella Welp won the 100-yard freestyle race with her time of 56.65 and Reese Taylor won the one-meter diving event with her six-dive total of 299.20. Both Taylor and Welp set new school records in their events.

BG football wins by forfeit to improve to 5-0

ALGONA—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan found a new way to come up with a district win on Friday, Sept. 27 as the black-and-gold earned a victory via a forfeit.

Rockford did not have enough healthy bodies to field a team so the Golden Bears were given a 17-0 victory to improve to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in eight-man District No. 2 play.

Bulldogs earn pair of non-conference wins

CLARION—Stepping outside of North Central Conference volleyball play, the Algona Bulldogs earned a pair of non-conference victories on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The red-and-black topped Clarion-Goldfield/Dows by the score of 25-17 and 25-16 and defeated Pocahontas Area by the final score of 25-16 and 25-14 to improve to 10-7 in overall matches this fall.

Warrior volleyball falls to Lake Mills

ARMSTRONG—North Union took one game, but Lake Mills was too strong as the Bulldogs defeated the green-black-and-silver in four sets in a Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match held on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The visitors took the first two sets by the scores of 9-25 and 15-25 before the Warriors won game number three by the score of 25-23. But, the Bulldogs ended the match with a 9-25 victory in the fourth set.

Swim team wins pair of events at Perry

PERRY—Winning a pair of events highlighted the performances of the Algona swim team on Thursday, Sept. 26 in a triangular held at the McCreary Community Building in Perry.

The Fort Dodge Dodgers were the winner of the meet with a total of 96 points as Perry was the runner-up with 89 and Algona took third place with 61 team points.
