St. Edmond scored twice in the final quarter on a pair of long runs to rally for an 18-12 come-from-behind win over the North Union Warriors. The non-district football game was played at Armstrong on Friday, Aug. 31.
After a scoreless first period, North Union opened the contest’s scoring in the second stanza as sophomore Ryan Lang scored on a two-yard touchdown run to complete an 11 play, 66-yard drive.

Bishop Garrigan built a big lead early and overcame four turnovers to topple a stubborn Mason City Newman squad by the score of 28-21 in a game played at Conway Field on Friday, Aug. 31.
Things started well for the home team as they took opening kickoff and marched 71 yards in nine plays as quarterback Brad Capesius ran the final six yards for a touchdown. The conversion try failed, but the black-and-gold led 6-0 with 4:20 gone in the contest.

Two big plays and some miscues, including four turnovers were too much for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines football team to overcome in a 20-12 season opening loss to the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats in a game played at West Bend on Friday, Aug. 24.

Senior quarterback Matt Grein threw four touchdown passes as the Algona Bulldogs opened the 2018 campaign with an impressive 33-14 victory over the Humboldt Wildcats in a contest that took place on Friday, Aug. 24 at Humboldt.
The visitors out-scored the blue-and-gold 19-7 in the second half to earn the win. Grein completed 12-of-17 passes for 155 yards and did not throw an interception in the game.

After a great morning on the court winning their first three matches, the afternoon did not go quite as well as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears volleyball squad dropped their last two matches and placed third in the six-team St. Edmond tournament on Saturday in Fort Dodge.
Aplington-Parkersburg won the tourney with a 4-1 mark as Southeast Valley was second with an identical 3-2 record as the black-and-gold, but won the head-to-head matchup between the two squads.

Throughout the years at the Algona race track, the Pesicka family name has seemingly been an entry in various division of the dirt track racing at the oval.
During the 2018 edition of the Kossuth County Fair with two nights of racing, eight members of the Loren Pesicka Sr. family raced at the track either at the fair race on Thursday or the Gary Harken Memorial Race on Saturday or both.

It is hard to believe, but the opening weekend of high school football is upon us as all four area teams are in action this Friday.  Some other fall sports will get things going before that.  The Algona volleyball team opened things up on Tuesday at the Dallas Center-Grimes Classic with four games to open the season.

A second night of dirt track racing of the 2018 Kossuth County Fair saw 77 race cars along with 14 vintage cars for the annual Gary Harken Memorial Race on Saturday, Aug. 4 to honor the longtime former track employee.

Drake Buscherfeld of Bishop Garrigan was named to the Class 1A second-team all-state squad as a utility player by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

Senior outfielder Trevor Bormann of the Algona Bulldogs was selected to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all-state baseball squad last weekend.

After completing a great senior softball campaign, Algona’s second baseman Emma Hjelle was rewarded with the highest honor as she was selected to the Class 3A first-team all-state squad by the Iowa Softball Coaches Association recently.

After a nice turnout last year in its inaugural appearance, the second annual “Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night” was a huge success on Thursday, July 26 at the Kossuth County Speedway in Algona.

Caitlin Thilges of Bishop Garrigan was one of 40 players regardless of class named to the Academic All-State squad by the Iowa Softball Coaches Association last week during the state tournament.

Going 5-1 in a three-day tournament, the Algona A’s baseball squad won the USSSA Division 1A State Championship played in Cedar Rapids on July 7-9.
The squad was made up of 11 players in Tate Woodward, Myles Sanchez, Carlos Gomez, Logan Lentz, Lamorn Ulfers, Harrison Waltz, Reid Louwagie, Jensen Eischen. Austin Steenhoek, Tate Slagle and Daniel Kemna and were coached by Gilbert Sanchez and Chas Slagle.

ALGONA – Hunting with Heroes and the Kossuth County Speedway will host their second annual Salute to Veterans race on Thursday, July 26.
