Golden Bear boys earn trio of medals at state

Three members of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears boys track squad earned individual medals at the Class 1A state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines over the past weekend.
The black and gold finished in 21st place overall in the team race with a score of 13 points. George-Little Rock, who was at the squad's district meet, won the state title with a total of 52 team points.

New AHS wall of fame members announced

Four new members will join the Algona High School Wall of Fame, the school recently announced.
New inductees are Roger Barr, Gene Hunt, the 1966 wrestling team and the 1996-1997 girls golf teams.

Trap shoot teams hit the road

The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trap-shoot squads traveled to Garner May 20 with 20 full and partial teams competing and seven schools or shooting clubs.
The Algona High School squad had the best score of the day with 234. Saint Ansgar was the runner-up with 223, and Bishop Garrigan ended in third place with 220.

BGHS boys headed back to state

Led by the individual medalist, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys golf team was the runner-up in the Class 1A district tournament May 17 at the Pheasant Run Golf Course and advanced to the stae tournament in Newton.
The black and gold had a team total of 347 that was only topped by Grundy Center's score of 334. AGWSR ended up in third place with a team total of 347.

AHS boys send five to state

A handful of Algona Bulldog boys track members are headed to Des Moines this weeks with hopes of bringing home some hardware. The squad qualified those young men in six different events at the Class 3A district meet May 10.
A tight four-way battle in team standings for the district title saw Decorah narrowly take the crown with 118 points. Webster City was right behind with 117 points, and Clear Lake was third with 111.5, just ahead of Algona's team total of 111 points.

Fehr to state in four events

West Bend-Mallard sophomore Rachel Fehr qualified for the Class 1A state track meet in four different events to highlight the performances of three area girls teams at the regional meet May 10.
The Wolverines qualified six young women in four events ast he Golden Bears advanced nine in four events, and the Warriors qualifed five young women in two events.

Area Class 1A boys qualify in 7 events

Three area boys track teams competed in the Class 1A district meet on May 10 and qualified 10 young men in seven different events.
Bishop Garrigan had eight athletes qualify in five different events, and North Union added two young men in a pair of events for this week's action inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

AHS girls in eight events at state meet

The Algona Bulldog girls track team qualified seven young women in eight different events for this week's state's Class 3A regional meet May 10.
The red and black finished in third place overall in the team race with 119 points. Decorah earned the regional title with a total of 152, and Iowa Falls-Alden was the runner-up with 138.5 points.

Warrors advance to district tourney

Finishing third at the Class 1A sectional tournament at the Newell Golf Club on May 10, the North Union Warrior boys golf squad advanced to Thursday district tourney to be played at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
The green, black and silver took third place in the meet with a team total of 355 that was only topped by Newell-Fonda's score of 342 and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire's total of 352.

Capesius, BGHS win first round regional meet

The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls golf team took full advantage of playing on their home course at Spring Valley to place first in the first round of Class 1A regional golf on Monday, May 13.
The black and gold cruised to the team title with a total of 366 to easily finish ahead of North Union's score of 413. St. Edmond also advanced to Monday's regional final at Britt with a team total of 448 in the eight-team meet.

Arndorfer, BGHS boys claim sectional golf title

By a margin of 18 strokes, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys golf squad claimed the Class 1A sectional title. Junior Andrew Arndorfer won the individual crown at the Nashua Town and Country Club May 10.

AHS boys golf season ends

The 2019 golf season came to an end for the Algona Bulldog boys golf squad with the Class 3A sectional meet on May 9 at the Landsmeer Golf Club.
Spencer won the sectional title with a team total of 219, and Spirit Lake was runner-up with a score of 331. Both teams advance to the district meet at the Spencer Golf and Country Club Thursday. Algona rounded out the eight-team field with a team total of 391.

Trap-shoot squads host meet

The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trap-shoot teams hosted a meet May 11 at the Izaak Walton League with eight schools or clubs participating.
The Mason City Mohawks team won the meet with a score of 212. The Bishop Garrigan squad took second with 208, and Algona was third with a team total of 206.

Algona girls claim NCC track title

By the slimmest margin of one point, the Algona Bulldog girls track squad reclaimed the North Central Conference title on May 2 on their home track.
The red and black edged Iowa Falls-Alden 162.5-161.5 for the crown with the Humboldt Wildcats right behind in the three-team battle with a total of 152.5 points.

Warrior girls win top of iowa golf championship

Led by runner-up medalist Halle Rezac, the North Union Warrior girls golf team claimed the Top of Iowa Conference golf title in the league tournament played on the Gruis Recreation Course May 6.
The green, black and silver compiled a team total of 407 to edge out runner-up Bishop Garrigan's score of 409 in the two-team race. Lake Mills was a distant third with a total of 476.

Algona 2nd at Spencer

Led by a fifth-place finish from senior Hallie Lovstad, the Algona Bulldog girls golf team was the runner-up in the seven-team Spencer Invitational at the Spencer Golf and Country Club May 4.
The red and black's team total of 441 was topped on the day only by Emmetsburg's winning score of 388 with Carroll Kuemper placing third. Their team total was 443.
