Swim team drops double duel

The Algona swim team dropped a double duel at Storm Lake on Thursday, Sept. 27 as the red-and-black fell to Storm Lake 72-22 and Spencer by the score of 66-28.
Cheyanne Fries placed first against Storm Lake in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 28.13 while teammate Alexa Gilbert was first against Spencer in the 100-yard breaststroke event in 1:26.74.

BGHS cruises to Homecoming win

Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan raced out to a big halftime lead and cruised to 42-7 homecoming district victory over the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen Union Royals in a contest played at Conway Field on Friday, Sept. 22.
The black-and-gold defense, which was outstanding all night long by holding the visitors to 35 total yards and no first downs, set the tempo of the game on the first series with a three-and-out series.

WB-Mallard routs Mavericks, 73-28

West Bend-Mallard scored early and often in a 73-28, eight-man district football victory over the Clay Central-Everly Mavericks in a contest played in West Bend that concluded homecoming week for the purple-and-gold.
The Wolverines exploded for 44 points in the opening 12 minutes of action and led 44-6 at the conclusion of the first period, increased its advantage to 59-6 at intermission and also led 65-12 heading into the final quarter of play.

Algona tops Humboldt, 16-13

Algona raced off to a 16-0 lead early and held off a second half rally by the Humboldt to defeat the Wildcats 16-13 in a Class 3A district football contest played on Friday, Sept. 15 at Algona as the red-and-black improved to 3-1 overall and are now 1-1 in the district.

Golden Bears top North Union, 22-6

Bishop Garrigan denied a valiant effort by the North Union Warriors to top the green-black-and-silver 22-6 at Armstrong on Friday, Sept. 15 as the Golden Bears spoiled the home team’s homecoming festivities.
Neither squad scored in the opening period but the Warriors used a 41-yard punt return by Jordi Rodriguez to start a drive at the Bishop Garrigan 10-yard line to start the second quarter.

Golden Bears host CYO tourney

For the first time, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears volleyball squad got the opportunity to host the annual CYO tournament on Sunday, Sept. 17 as seven schools competed in the tourney.
Carroll Kuemper, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, remained undefeated by winning all six of its matches to take the tournament as Bishop Heelan, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A was the runner-up at 5-1 and LeMars Gehlen, the fifth-ranked squad in Class 1A was third at 4-2.

Algona swim team hosts home meet

The Algona swim team hosted its only home meet on the 2017 season on Monday, Sept. 11 as the squad entertained teams from Boone and Spencer at the Algona Family YMCA.
A nice crowd surrounded the pool as the Bulldogs fell to Boone by the score of 84-13 and the red-and-black were defeated by the Spencer Tigers by the score of 75-22.

Bacha runs BGHS past Rebels

Senior running back Drew Bacha rushed for 156 yards in 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to help lead the fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears football to a 32-6 district opening victory over the Sioux Central Rebels in a contest played at Conway Field on Friday, Sept. 8.
Bacha scored on a runs of one, 12 and 49 yards as the home team scored two touchdowns in the game’s final 12 minutes to break open a 20-6 contest between the two schools.

WB-M falls to eighth-ranked Panthers

Eighth-ranked Kingsley-Pierson built a comfortable first half lead and went onto a 40-24 eight-man football victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in a district-opening contest played at West Bend on Friday, Sept. 9.
The Panthers led 8-2 at the end of the first quarter before extending their advantage to 24-2 at halftime and the black-and-gold also led by the count of 32-10 heading into the final 12 minutes of play.

Bulldogs place 3rd at Algona Classic

Algona went 4-2 on the day and finished in third place at the annual Algona Classic volleyball tournament played in Algona on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Sioux Center, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, won the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record as Lake Mills, the number eight ranked team in Class 2A was the runner-up with a record of 5-1.

Golden Bears blank Jaguars 19-0

Bishop Garrigan scored three touchdowns in the first half and the black-and-gold’s defense made those points hold up in a 19-0 shutout win over the Southeast Valley Jaguars in the final non-district football game played at Gowrie on Friday, Sept. 1.
The sixth-ranked Golden Bears’ defense held the Jaguars to 37 yards rushing in 21 carries while rushing 47 times for 239 yards themselves to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Late field goal moves Algona to 2-0

Spencer Holmes booted a 26-yard field goal on the final play of the game to give the Algona Bulldogs football team an exciting 23-21 non-district football win over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.
The contest was played at Bulldog Field in Algona on Friday, Sept. 1 in front of nice crowd with perfect conditions although a few sprinkles in the second half bought out a few umbrellas.

Algona wins season opener 27-7

Algona went down and scored on the opening drive of the game and never looked back in picking up a 27-7 season opening non-district football victory over the Forest City Indians in a non-district contest played at Algona on Friday, Aug. 25.

Golden Bears win St. Edmond tourney

Bishop Garrigan went 4-1 on the day in matches to capture first place in the St. Edmond volleyball tournament played at Fort Dodge on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Pocahontas Area also went 4-1 to place second as the black-and-gold won the head-to-head matchup with St. Edmond taking third at 3-2, Aplington-Parkersburg was 2-3 for fourth place and Webster City was winless in all five of its matches.

Aerial game leads BGHS past Poky

Bishop Garrigan scored three touchdowns in the final 1:39 of the first half and went onto a 26-12 season-opening non-district football win over the Pocahontas Indians in a contest played at Pocahontas on Friday, Aug. 25.
Brad Capesius threw for four first half touchdown passes and a green Golden Bear defense pitched a shutout in the final 24 minutes to earn its first victory of the year.

Trio of players return to all-area baseball team

Just three players return for the 12th annual edition of the All-Area Baseball Team as Nick Stein of Algona, Joel Vaske of Bishop Garrigan and Blake Crawmer of North Union all return for the second straight summer on the squad.  This year’s team is made up of nine seniors, four juniors and a trio of sophomores.
