Algona rallies to top Cowboys

Algona won the last four matches of the meet to rally for a 35-28 North Central Conference wrestling match victory over the Clarion-Goldfield Cowboys in a match held on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Algona High School.
Trailing 28-17, the red-and-black got close decisions from Noah Murphy and Dominick Etherington and then received falls by Josh Wegener and Luke McKenna to rally for the exciting win.

Johanna Vaske tosses in a game-high 16 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears girls’ basketball squad to a hard-fought 37-25 cross-town victory over the Algona Bulldogs.
Led by 24 points by senior guard Landon Rash, the Algona Bulldogs boys’ basketball cruised past cross-town rival Bishop Garrigan 65-44 to remain undefeated on the season.

Bulldogs cruise past Bishop Garrigan girls

Usually in the contest between the two basketball squads in Algona, the cross-town battle is a nail-bitter.  This one was far from that on Thursday, Dec. 22 at Algona High as the Bulldogs cruised past the frigid cold-shooting Bishop Garrigan squad by the score of 58-28.
The red-and-black defense forced the visitors to a tough evening shooting from the floor as the Golden Bears made just 6-of-43 overall field goals for 13.9 percent.
 

Golden Bears edge Bulldogs, 55-53

In the annual cross-town boys’ basketball contest, Bishop Garrigan hit a pair of late free throws to squeeze out a hard-fought 55-53 victory over Algona in a battle played in front of nice crowd at Algona High on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Brad Capesius hit a free throw with 17 seconds left and Chase Winkel sank one two seconds later to break a 53-53 dead-lock to give the visitors the win in battle that saw five ties and 11 lead changes during the contest.

North Union tops Wolverines, 42-24

North Union picked up its third victory of the 2016-2017 season with a 42-24 win over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in a non-conference match wrestled in Swea City on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The Warriors lost a 60-18 Top of Iowa Conference match to the Eagle Grove Eagles before losing a 43-42 non-conference match to the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars in a match that came down to the criteria of most first points scored to decide the winner of the dual.

Bulldogs split NCC wrestling matches

Algona split a pair of North Central Conference wrestling matches as the red-and-black defeated St. Edmond 75-3 and fell to the Humboldt Wildcats by the score of 38-28.  The league matches were held at Algona on Thursday, Dec. 8.
The match against St. Edmond started at 145 pounds where Mitchell Priebe recorded a fall in 3:49 over Lucas Itzen and Austin Chase followed with a 3:10 pin of Ty Smith at 152 pounds.

Bulldogs fall in overtime to Clear Lake

Zach Lester hit a fade-away three-pointer over the out-stretched arms of Riley Helmers at the buzzer in the first overtime to give the Clear Lake Lions a 75-74 win over the Algona Bulldogs.
Lester had 28 points in the game but that was only the third best scoring total of the evening as teammate Thomas Strobeck poured in 32 points and Jackson Helmers tossed in 31 tallies for the Bulldogs.

Winkel’s 28 lead BGHS past Eagles

Freshman Cade Winkel poured in a career-high 28 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team to an 84-64 Top of Iowa Conference win in a contest played in Algona on Friday, Dec. 9.
The freshman connected on 12-of-15 field goals from the floor and hit 4-of-6 free throws to go along with grabbing eight rebounds, passed out a pair of assists, came up with one steal and blocked one shot in the game for the black-and-gold.

Jaguars edge WB-Mallard

Morgan Castenson nailed her fifth three-pointer of the game with eight seconds remaining to make a 38-38 dead-lock and give the Southeast Valley Jaguars a 41-38 non-conference victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad.
The home played well in the first quarter as they led 9-6 at the end of the first eight minutes of action and held a narrow 20-19 advantage as the two squads headed to the locker-room for intermission.

Golden Bears run past Vikings

Bishop Garrigan scored the first 12 points of the game to set the tempo of the game and went onto an easy 57-19 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings in a contest played in Algona on Saturday, Dec. 3.
The black-and-gold got seven points from Whitney Hovey, five from Jenna Boelter and two from Gracie McGuire to build a 14-2 advantage at the end of the game’s first eight minutes of play.

Buzz-beater topples Wildcats

Janna Julius laid in an easy basket off a nice feed from Abbey Holmes to just beat the buzzer to give the Algona Bulldogs an exciting 43-41 North Central Conference girls’ basketball win over the Humboldt Wildcats in a game played in Algona on Friday, Dec. 2.

Golden Bears win season opener

Bishop Garrigan tossed in nine three-point field goals and got some quality minutes from its bench in a 50-30 season-opening non-conference victory over the St. Edmond Gaels in a contest played in Fort Dodge.
The black-and-gold came out hot behind the three-point arc, splashing 5-of-7 treys in the opening eight minutes and led 16-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Bulldogs win season opener

ALGONA—Three players hit double digits in the scoring department to help lead the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team to a convincing 66-34 non-conference win over the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets.
After a slow start, the red-and-black held a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased its advantage to 27-11 at the halftime break.  The Bulldogs also led 43-26 as the fourth period of action began.

‘Heartbreak in the Dome’

It was billed as a battle between the best two defensive football teams in Class A for the state championship at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Both Bishop Garrigan and Gladbrook-Reinbeck did not disappoint the large crowd as the Rebels scored a touchdown with six minutes left to edge the black-and-gold by the score of 20-19.

BGHS advances to state football finals

All season long, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ defense has been outstanding and a big reason why the squad was 11-0.  Friday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls in the Class A state football semi-finals, the defense was called on late one more time for the a trip to the state championship game.

“Headed to the UNI-Dome”

For the first time since 2005, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears football team is headed back to the UNI-Dome.  The black-and-gold defeated third-rated West Hancock 12-8 a defensive, physical football contest between the two rivals played at Conway Field on Friday, Nov. 4.
