Poky beats WB-M

The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines dropped a 63-36 Twin Lakes Conference decision on Feb. 7 to Pocahontas in West Bend.
The Indians held a 21-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The visitors enjoyed a 30-21 lead at intermission and held a 46-26 lead as the game's final eight minutes of action began.

Five dogs to district

Five Algona wretlers advance to this week's district tournament at Algona High School from the Class 2A sectional meet Feb. 8. The top two wrestlers from each weight on Saturday advance to the state wrestling tournament.
Three red and black grapplers (Jacob Zabka, Cole Lewis and Andrew Hamilton) earned sectional titles while two other teammates (Luke McKenna and Gavin Meints) took second.

Hanson, Fehr win at sectional

Connor Fehr and Donovan Hanson won sectional titles, highlighting the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at the Class 1A meet Feb. 8.
Teammate Landon Studer placed second to also advance to the district tournament in Sioux Rapids on Saturday as the top five finishers in each weight class will advance to the state wrestling tournament.

Kruse, Anderson advance to district

Both Trevor Kruse and Jake Anderson finished in second place to advance to this Saturday's district wrestling tournament in Sioux Rapids, highlighting the performances of the North Union Warriors squad at the Class 1A sectional tourney Feb. 8.

Defense leads BGHS girls by NU

For the first 12 minutes of Friday's Top of Iowa Conference contest against North Union, the high-powered Bishop Garrigan offense sputtered.
But a trademark defense kept the squad in the game, and the home team outscored the green, black and silver 58-22 in the final 20 minutes to earn a 69-33 win.

Golden Bears beat NU boys

North Union put up a battle for the first two and one-half quarters, but the size advantage of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears was just too much as the black and gold earned a 87-58 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball win over the Warriors on Jan. 31 in Algona.
The home team started first by jumping to a 7-1 lead before Robert Ortman drained a 3-pointer, and Avery Krantz scored a hoop off a nice pass from Braden Pierce to cut the advantage to 7-6.

Kruse third at conference tourney

Junior Trevor Kruse earned the highest-ever finish in a conference meet by a North Union wrestler at the Top of Iowa Conference meet Feb. 1 in Osage. He placed third to highlight the performances of the Warrior grapplers.
Kruse went 3-1 on the day to improve to 26-4 on the year. The junior had a first round bye before earning a fall over Ashten Love of Lake MIlls in 3:05. His lone loss of the day came in the semifinals.

Algona girls take NCC road victory

Algona jumped to an early advantage and never gave up the lead in a 58-31 North Central Conference girls basketball victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets Jan. 31 in Iowa Falls.
The red and black held a 19-8 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and extended that advantage to 34-10 as the two squads headed to the locker rooms at intermission.

No. 15 E-Hawks too much for WB-M

Emmetsburg, ranked No. 15 in Class 2A, had too much firepower for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines girls basketball team as the E-Hawks handed the purple and gold a 70-25 Twin Lakes Conference loss on Jan. 31 in Emmetsburg.
The home team starte quickly by taking a 17-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Bulldogs get key NCC road win

Algona earned a huge North Central Conference (NCC) boys basketball road win Jan. 31, defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 58-55 in Iowa Falls.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-3 overall and are 8-2 in the NCC while the Cadets fell to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.

Titans cruise past WB-M

South Central Calhoun raced to big lead and never looked back in a 66-30 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
The Titans built a 21-10 lead at the conclusion of the first period before increasing the advantage to 46-15 at intermission.

Hanson places first at Poky

Donovan Hanson finished in first place at 113 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at the Lynn Moody Invitational on Feb. 1 in Pocahantas.
Teammates Michael Auten and Logan Studer ended up in second place while both Garrett Fehr and Aaron Massner placed third. Lucas Fehr and Tyler Banwart each took fourth for the purple and gole, and Ben Massner finished fifth.

Algona wins three matches

Algona improved its dual match record to 14-3 overall on the year with three nonconference wrestling wins Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Britt. The red and black defeated Gilbert 39-22 and Belmond-Klemme 78-6.
The third wn came down to the last bout as Jacob Zabka won a 17-1 technical fall in 4:00 to give the Bulldogs a narrow, 38-36 victory over the West Hancock Eagles.

Lewis, hamilton earn NCC titles

For the eighth straight year, the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad had at least one individual champion at the annual North Central Conference wrestling tournament Jan. 25 in Iowa Falls.
Seniors Cole Lewis at 195 pounds and Andrew Hamilton at 220 went undefeated to earn gold medals, the fourth time in those eight years that the red and black had a pair of champions. Algona now has had 105 conference champions throughout the years.

Wildcats rally past bulldogs

Humboldt scored the first of 12 points of the final quarter to complete a come-from-behind, 57-48 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over the Algona Bulldogs Jan. 24 in Algona.
Caden Matson scored the first basket of the game before Collin Bleich drained a triple, and James Wartick scored a hoop to give the home team the lead at 5-2.

Bulldogs hold off gritty Cats

Algona fought off an outstanding effort from a short-handed Humboldt squad to earn a 51-40 North Central Conference girls basketball victory over the Wildcats Jan. 24 in Algona.
The visitors played without four players, including a pair of starters who were competing in the state wrestling tournament in Waverly.
