Season-high 110 cars at track

A season-high of 110 cars signed in at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, June 28 boasted by 31 cars with the Dynotech Dyometer Legend Cars Racing for a Cause.
Also there were 16 sport mods at the oval battling for the Wyffels Hybrid $1,000 to win feature along with 16 stock cars and 15 hobby stock cars.

Sexton leads AHS to NCC win over IFA

Collin Sexton had three singles to help lead the Algona Bulldogs baseball squad to a 7-2 North Central Conference victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.
The home team plated two runs in the bottom of the second, tallied once in the third, pushed across three more in the fifth frame and one run in the sixth as the Cadets scored single runs in both the second and fourth frames.

Byrkeland, Thilges belt homers as BGHS wins opener

At tournament time, seniors are expected to be the leaders of a team as Gigi Byrkeland and Caitlin Thilges provided that spark for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears in an 8-1 Class 1A regional opening softball contest played in Algona on Monday, July 2.
Both seniors blasted two-run homers as the black-and-gold advanced to the next round of the tournament and took on Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Tuesday at Emmetsburg.
 

Bulldogs defeat #11 Gaels 6-1

Algona took advantage of four big errors by St. Edmond to score six runs in a key 6-1 North Central Conference softball victory over the 11th ranked (Class 1A) Gaels.
Earlier in the year on June 4 at Fort Dodge, the green-and-white topped the Bulldogs 11-1 in five innings in a game that saw the red-and-black commit five errors.

Warrior girls continue to roll

Good teams find ways to win close games and the North Union Warriors softball team was on the right end of four more of those contests over the weekend at the Spencer Softball tournament.
On Friday, the fifth-rated (Class 1A) green-black-and-silver used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Estherville-Lincoln Central by the score of 5-4 before topping West Sioux, the 10th ranked squad in Class 2A by the score of 6-5.
 

Late-inning win for Garrigan

North Iowa tried everything to stay even with the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears by using six different pitchers in the game, but the black-and-gold plated seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out an 8-1 Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory.
The home team scored first in the contest in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Bormann laced a one-out single. Bormann stole second and cruised home on an RBI single off the bat of Drake Buscherfeld.
 

Goche, Sexton blast homers, but Spencer outslugs Bulldogs

Spencer out-lasted Algona 13-12 in a high-scoring non-conference baseball contest in a game played at Spencer on Wednesday, June 13. The home team jumped out to early leads of 6-1 and 8-2 before the red-and-black rallied.
Grant Goche belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning to cut the Tiger advantage to 8-5 and after Spencer made it 9-5, Collin Sexton blasted a two-run round tripper in a three-run sixth frame to slice the lead to 9-8.
 

Golden Bears go 1-1 at Newman

Bishop Garrigan split a pair of non-conference softball games at the Mason City Newman Classic played in Mason City on Saturday, June 16 as the black-and-gold fell to Hudson 8-3 in their opening game, but bounced back with a tight 6-5 victory over Springville later in the day.

Ingalls state trapshooting champion

CEDAR FALLS – Algona High School’s Evan Ingalls is a state champion.
Sunday in Cedar Falls, Ingalls and 43 other members of the trapshooting teams from Algona and Bishop Garrigan high schools participated in the Iowa High School State Trapshoot Championship. Each shooter shot 200 rounds – 100 in the morning and 100 in the afternoon. 

Plathe pitches BGHS to league win

Marcus Plathe hurled six strong innings to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears baseball squad to a 12-2, six-inning, Top of Iowa Conference victory over the West Hancock Eagles.
Plathe gave up two runs in the top of the first inning, one of them earned, but settled down after that. The slender right-hander allowed a total of four hits in the game while fanning 11 batters, walked four and hit a batter to earn the win on the bump.

Bulldogs cruise to Algona Classic title

Algona pounded out 23 hits, scored 27 runs  and cruised to a pair of victories to win the title at the Algona Classic played at Bulldog Park on Saturday, June 9.
The red-and-black opened the day by defeating Eagle Grove by the score of 17-0 in three innings and toppled North Butler 10-0 in six innings. Eagle Grove beat North Butler 6-4 in the other game in the classic.

BGHS wins CYO tournament

Pounding out 22 hits in two games, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball team won first place at the annual CYO tournament played in Carroll on Saturday, June 2.
The black-and-gold opened the day with a 13-0, four-inning victory over Remsen St, Mary’s before topping the Crusaders of Bishop Heelan later in the day by the score of 8-5 to win the championship.

Bulldogs plate 10 runs in the fifth

Algona exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to blow open a 7-5 game and went onto a 17-5 North Central Conference baseball win over the St. Edmond Gaels in a game played in Fort Dodge on Monday, June 4.
The red-and-black opened the game’s scoring in the second inning with four runs with the big blow in the frame being a two-run double off the bat of Matt Grein.

Golden Bears place 7th at state; Capesius 24th

A young Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf squad finished in seventh place as a team at the Class 1A state golf tournament played at the America Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30.
The black-and-gold compiled a two-day total of 778 that consisted of a 382 on Tuesday along with a score of 396 on Wednesday. Iowa Valley won the state title with a 740 on the fifth place tiebreaker over New London, who also had a 740.

Meis pitches Bears past Broncos

John Meis hurled six strong innings and teammate Drew Bacha laced a double and a single to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ baseball squad to a 9-2 Top of Iowa Conference win over Belmond-Klemme in a game played at Belmond on Friday, May 25.

Perfect week ends in walk-off win

Coming into the 2018 season with a large group of returning letter winners, the expectations for the Algona Bulldogs softball team were high. On Friday, the squad completed a 4-0 week with an extra inning walk-off win.
Teylor Rindone singled in pinch runner Alyssa Hentges in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the red-and-black a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in a North Central Conference contest played in Algona on Friday, May 25.
